RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-06-03 Thread Schwartz, Jim

It's called Against the Law if I expose HR data that way. Thanks for
playing.

Some of the crud they send should be via links to the intranet, if only I
could get it to work as well as Exchange does. But then again, I don't run
the intranet...

One other issue you may want to look at is the anti-virus client on the
workstation. Many of them are MAPI aware so when the client get the new mail
notification it goes and checks the new mail for an attachment and if one
exists it may download the attachment and scans it for a virus. Where you
can really get banged is when someone sends a larger attachment to those 20
users in one location and all the clients are trying to bring the attachment
local to scan at the same time. I've seen bandwidth utilization spike hard
and the clients "lock up" while this is being done.

You probably won't. How much of that bandwidth is available? As a rule of

should be just fine.

We have an office in Brussels that has a network connected to us by a VPN.

Their Exchange server is on our site. All mail flows fine between them. (

My boss wants to move all their servers over here.

They have a 512K link. We have a T1.

I told him that 20 people connecting to Exchange over a VPN would not work
well with the bandwidth they have.

I'm trying to find the information to support that statement.

RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-05-31 Thread John Matteson

Whay back when Exchange was just coming out, the number batted around was 30
LIGHT users (that is the old stress test definition) could be supported on a
56Kb link. Now that was 30 LIGHT users, with nothing else going on across
the link, no file transfers (other than in mail), no web surfing, no telnet,
nada.

You may want to bump that to 128 Kb as a minimum. 512 Kb should work okay
with 20 users, as long as they aren't shipping 15 Mbyte PowerPoint
presentations with their mail.

I doubt that Microsoft has (or ever will) come out with a ironclad statement
that says X amount of bandwidth will support Y number of users. There are
too many factors that can get caught in the mix.

John Matteson; Exchange Manager
Geac Corporate Infrastructure Systems and Standards

Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been
accepted as a reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and
its punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal.
Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path
leading to success and truth. --Bruce Lee

We have an office in Brussels that has a network connected to us by a VPN.

Their Exchange server is on our site. All mail flows fine between them. (
IMC is on this side of the pond) this configuration is FINE THE WAY IT IS.

My boss wants to move all their servers over here.

They have a 512K link. We have a T1.

I told him that 20 people connecting to Exchange over a VPN would not work
well with the bandwidth they have.

I'm trying to find the information to support that statement.

It can work over as little as a 33.6K link (I've not tried less). Give
it more, and it takes it up to the transmission capabilities of the link
and CPUs involved.

RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-05-31 Thread Preston Jeffares

Heheheh unfortunately, we're not. I think so many of us are quite used to making so
little work so well. We've got a few remote sites with 5 users riding a 128kbps line
with 32k CIR. That seems to have worked just fine. We see a avg throughput of 70kbps
per second. I haven't really gotten the opportunity to try and flood that line with
MAPI clients, but I think we could handle a few more.

It all comes down to how long people are willing to wait. So long as the line is
stable... it's all a matter of time. When people ask me "will it work?" I tell them
"Sure... it WILL work... but probably not the way you want it to." Throw out that
disclaimer... if they go ahead with it and it's not enough... you covered your 4$$ and
they'll eventually get tired of the waiting and up the line speed. Or maybe they
wont... but hopefully you won't be the one on the slow link...

Much better explanation...

You probably won't. How much of that bandwidth is available? As a rule
of thumb, you need between 3 and 5 MB available per user. For 20 users,
you should be just fine.

Sorry...

RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-05-31 Thread Schwartz, Jim

One other issue you may want to look at is the anti-virus client on the
workstation. Many of them are MAPI aware so when the client get the new mail
notification it goes and checks the new mail for an attachment and if one
exists it may download the attachment and scans it for a virus. Where you
can really get banged is when someone sends a larger attachment to those 20
users in one location and all the clients are trying to bring the attachment
local to scan at the same time. I've seen bandwidth utilization spike hard
and the clients "lock up" while this is being done.

Much better explanation...

You probably won't. How much of that bandwidth is available? As a rule
of thumb, you need between 3 and 5 MB available per user. For 20 users,
you should be just fine.

Sorry...

We have an office in Brussels that has a network connected to us by a
VPN.

Their Exchange server is on our site. All mail flows fine between them.

My boss wants to move all their servers over here.

They have a 512K link. We have a T1.

I told him that 20 people connecting to Exchange over a VPN would not
work well with the bandwidth they have.

I'm trying to find the information to support that statement.

I'll add another apology.
In the past, I have seen a 20 user office set up in much in the same manner

RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-05-31 Thread Kevin Miller

My network here used to look like 2 cloud t1's from my WAN, with 48 out
of the cloud to offices. The network was 2,000+% over subscribed but was
still able to support >10 Mapi connections at each office. The big but
here was that we were running PST's at that time. I since have it down
to 500% over subscribed and have moved most users to the store off of
there PST's. And things seem to run fine.

What else will come over this 512k line? Is it 512k Burst or CIR? When
you say ALL of there servers is when it sounds tricky.

RE: How much Bandwidth?

2002-05-31 Thread Majetic, John RAME

I know that problems between servers can occur if the bandwidth between them
falls below a certain number. But if you are talking about clients, sending,
receiving, and syncing, then I really don't know that there is a minimum.

I have a salesman who routinely connects at 9600. His Modem is broken, and
he refuses to send it in, he enjoys bitching at me to much. He doesn't seem
to have any problems at all, except it takes him forever to do anything.

When Northpoint went under, and we lost our DSL, we had a Webramp combining
three 56K dialup lines, and everyone was using that, including the field
people to dial in, and they never had any problems, and I saw some of them
connect at 2400!

But seriously it will use as much as it can, some people who use Broadband
to VPN in have hooked up at 10,000,000! That's was RAS admin says any way,
but I have seen them download large 10 Mb files in less than 3 minutes. So I
would say get as much as your budget will let you get.

It can work over as little as a 33.6K link (I've not tried less). Give it
more, and it takes it up to the transmission capabilities of the link and
