Thanks all for the replies. That clears that issue up. I was sure if
dont import duplicates applies to any message in any folder

I read somewhere once, years ago, that the Do not import duplicate
items works by matching message ID's on a folder by folder basis.
(Unfortunately I can't find the original reference now...)

So, if you have a message with ID {1234} in subfolder base1\A and run a
second import with a new root, say base2 ... then obviously the new
subfolder (base2\A) will be empty and won't have any message ID's to
match against... Hence the duplicate messages will be imported again
to the second subfolder.

This also works the same if you're doing an import, and the original
folder has duplicate messages in different subfolders.. Say a copy of
message ID {1234) exists in both base1\A and base1\B ... That message
will imported twice and exist in both folders after the import.

Unless something has changed in the past couple of years. J

Hope this makes sense, my mind is fuzzy this morning and not sure if I'm
reading your question correctly :(

I made two pst files called a1 and a2, containing the same messages.

Created two folders called a1 and a2. I import a1.pst to folder a1, all
messages and folder tree created, Then import a2.pst to folder a1 with
do not duplicate as the option, I didn't get duplicates.

Do not import duplicate itemsExisting data will be kept, and the
duplicate information in the file will not be copied to the current
Outlook folder.

Now if I import one of those pst's to folder a2, it does create dupes of
what is in folder a1 - because it's a different Outlook folder.

I'd think that'd be the same across all Outlooks and that Exchange
version wouldn't matter; I did it with OL2003 and Ex2010.

Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003

If a user has two or more PST files and these are imported into seperate
folders in Outlook and you select the option Do Not Import Dulplicates
will this stop two of the same messages being imported even if the they
are going into seperate folders?

Thanks

Correct. A duplicate item is an item that has an identical parent EntryID and
current EntryID.
