RE: OWA 2003 removal?
This issues goes back a few weeks, so I'm including the original question below. The reply I received said to just uninstall Exchange on the 2003 OWA box and that latter I could uninstall the Last Legacy Exchange Server. So, I tried to uninstall Exchange on just the OWA server through add/remove programs, but I get this error: Setup failed while installing the sub-component Microsoft Windows Active Directory schema update with error code 0xC1037986 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). Any ideas on what to do now? All the mailboxes are moved, but we're still not ready to remove the Last Legacy Server yet. However, I would however like to decommission the OWA box. Can someone tell me what the procedure is? Is it just do an uninstall of Exchange on the OWA box? RE: OWA 2003 removal?
Something I found: When following the well outlined steps on how to remove your legacy Exchange 2003 Server while migrating towards Exchange 2007 (for article, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905(EXCHG.80).aspx), one of the steps is to de-install the Exchange 2003 application using the Add/Remove programs. At first sight, everything seems to go fine, until at some point halfway the progress bar, where you are prompted for the Exchange Installation CD-ROM. As your Exchange Server needed to be updated to SP2 in order to install EX2007, the easiest thing is to browse towards the Exchange SP2 setup directory (which is mostly somewhere on the system); however, this will leave you with the following error message Setup failed while installing sub-component of Windows Active Directory schema update with error code 0xc1037986 (please consult the installation logs for detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed setup again. When clicking Retry, it will keep failing; when clicking cancel, the setup seems to continue, but at the end, Exchange application is not removed from your system. The trick however is very simple: when the popup for the installation files comes up, it is hardcoded somewhere in the setup removal process what file and version it needs to continue the removal process. All you need to do is point it to the original installation files version and it will smoothly run through it. Something to keep in mind the next time you go out to remove another legacy Exchange machine from your network. Instead of Add/Remove; use the original installation CD. RE: OWA 2003 removal?
Andy, If that is simply a FE OWA box, running the uninstall should be enough for you to decommission it. We had a similar setup as you describe at two locations and its seemed to go fairly straight forward. -troy -Original Message- From: Leedy, Andy [mailto:ale...@butlerahs.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 10:27 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: OWA 2003 removal?
