For those that have been doing relay testing with ORBZ. Here is some sad

Here's the email that those of you with forward sight
have been fearing since the inception of ORBZ.

As of this moment, ORBZ is shutting down. DNS zones
are going to stop resolving, the website will disappear
and mail will stop working (so furthur discussion on
this list probably won't work -- use NANAE).

I dont want to disappear in silence like ORBS, so I'll
try for as much description as possible without
compromising my own position.

I received an official court notice this afternoon to
turn over all information relation to ORBZ accounts.
This came from the 10th Judicial District court of the
State of Michigan. It appears that ORBZ may be facing
criminal charges for denial of service relating to the
Lotus Domino issue.

I was happy to try to weather any civil issues that may
have come up, and I was committed to seeing it through.
However, the threat of jail time is too much; I don't
believe in this fight quite that much.

Thank you all for all your support. I sincerely hope
that someone with the goal of carrying on the mission
of ORBZ pops up in another country with a less
foreboding legal system. Anyone who has copies of the
current zones may do with them what they wish.

please consider ORDB and SpamCop; they both provide
excellent free solutions.

Never mind that the town government was using a buggy version of the Lotus
Domino e-mail server, and that newer releases have fixed the problem. And
never mind that anti-spammers may have been conducting a routine scan for
possible sources of bulk e-mail.

What gave them the right to scan their mail server in the first place? You
wouldn't put up with port scans from some script kiddy. Why should we put up
with this crap from anyone else?

1. I do not like spam, either the real kind from a can, or the type

I would agree. Plus they were never willing to work with the admin. It was

Very Good point! A simple email or phone call to the admin explaining what
was happening would have prevented much of his aggravation. He took matters
on his own.

2. I applaud any attempt to try and make it as difficult as possible

3. HOWEVER, I do not, and never have, appreciated the I AM GOD and

However, the threat
of jail time is too much; I don't believe in this fight quite that much.

Thank you all for all your support. I sincerely hope
that someone with the goal of carrying on the mission
of ORBZ pops up in another country with a less
foreboding legal system. Anyone who has copies of the
current zones may do with them what they wish.

For those of you stuck without good spam filtering,
please consider ORDB and SpamCop; they both provide
excellent free solutions.

RE: ORBZ shutting down.

2002-03-21 Thread Clayton

I have to admit to seeing some irony in that, but to be honest, even Sunbelt ended up
on one of these lists, and had a hell of a time getting it corrected. Anti spam is
good, playing God in the name of anti spam is very very bad. The old ORBS contacted me
a few years ago, and I admit to having Exchange 5.5 incorrectly configured. Their
email prompted me to correct this, and that is doing the internet a service.
Arbitrarily blacklisting someone, or making unauthorised connections to their system
seem to me to be the actions of someone who needs to feel a sensation of power, while
hiding under the guise of doing a good service.

While I really don't like getting 17 emails a day about Girls and horses, I am
confused about the whole spam thing: reason? Check your mail at home every day. People
pay local newspapers, or kids to spread the paper equivalent around daily, which to me
is worse, because while internet spam chews up bandwidth, paper spam kills trees, and
fills up garbage dumps with the plastic some of it is wrapped in. No one seems to be
up in arms over that. (Don't get me wrong, I don't like receiving spam either, but am
taking a slightly different perspective on things)

At the end of the day, if my bandwidth is getting choked I can still breath :-) I
don't know that email spam will ever go away, the practice of getting information on
people, and selling the list dates back well before world wide email. Just remember
that before you fill in a free draw for a vacation!

RE: ORBZ shutting down.

2002-03-21 Thread Toni, Randy

We also got on the old ORBS list when 5.5 was first set up here. Actually
as it turned out it was a good learning experience for me - my first real
introduction to a mail server relay (learning the hard way - ouch) -- but my
apologies to whoever got spammed via our server and had the inclination to
nominate us for the relay testing and the illustrious distinction of being
on the ORBS potential relay database. I'm very glad that we were notified
by ORBS, and that getting off that list was pretty easy for us (one e-mail
and within a short time we were OK). The ORBS person I contacted even
provided some extra help in terms of understanding/interpreting some of the
docs on securing a relay.

Wasn't there a feud between ORBS and the apparently less friendly MAPS
service back then, and lots of other RBL-related crap going on? ORBS once
helped us out, but does the result justify the means? I'm not sure, but we
don't use any of the RBL services for filtering email. To just chop the
legs out from under someone for not toeing the line?... I mean, just who's
line is it anyway? Spam is easy for us to vaporize. I have more to worry
about with the several thousand flyers that the neighbourhood kids were
supposed to deliver but opted to stash under the trees in the park all
winter so we can all enjoy them as they now get wind-blown all over our
streets. Wish there was a delete key for that stuff

I haven't had a problem with them removing me from there lists, usually
takes less than a day and usually in a few hours.

I don't like the fact that you get black listed and you are not notified.
And I also don't like the fact that some outside organization is determining

Anybody have a good list of which are the sites that do this

Hey, Bill, check out this page: http://www.orbz.org/sysadmin-darkside.php
quote Use this page to report a
closed relay. The host that you report will be
removed from our blackhole list and added to our queue
for testing. It will then be marked as clean if it
does not allow relaying, or readded to one or more of
our lists if it does.

Sorry - should have been more specific.

Not my exchange server. Client's pop3 ipswitch server set wide open for relay. Not on my network at all. Jerk of a client I am probably going to drop but I hate walking away from something that is half a**ed set up. Owner wants to send and receive his ixnet.com account from his office and won't take no for an answer.

Maybe if his corporate email starts bouncing

You will not be able to send or receive mail from 20 % of population, if you are on Open Relay List.

What are the consequences of an open relay? I know of one that I cannot get them to change because one users wants to send email from his home account. It makes me angry but they will not listen. Maybe if I show them some valid reason other than being black listed they might wake up.

And I also don't like the fact that some outside organization is
determining how we as admins set up our systems.

When your system is configured as an open relay, then spammers are able to
steal your resources and use them to steal other people's resources. They're
not forcing anyone to use their lists - the lists are available as a service
only. The people who use those lists have chosen not to receive mail from
open relays. They're merely protecting their own property from misguided
and/or malicious property owners/caretakers such as those who run open
relays.

You are free to ignore them, if you wish. But you must be prepared to deal
with the consequences if you do.

BTW, Siegfried, how's that Event Sink coming to allow E2K to use the RBL?

I have been watching my IMS queue. I haven't found any from ORBZ but from
ORBS Mail-abuse, RBS or something like that and two others I just can't
remember.

I haven't had a problem with them removing me from there lists, usually
takes less than a day and usually in a few hours.

I don't like the fact that you get black listed and you are not notified.

I don't mind you testing,

When you say I am correct, you mean correct, your machines are configured
not to relay

I have been in email contact with Orbz, and their basic responce is f*ck
you, if you are on our list, you have an open relay, we don't have to prove
anything to you.

Anyone had any dealings with these guys? http://www.orbz.org

They say that my gateway machines are an open relay. We are using the SMTP
service out of the NT 4.0 Option Pack, SP6A

I know I have them configured to only relay messages for our internal
servers.

It seems to be a side effect of using WLBS to load balance the Microsoft

An SMTP connection from an SMTP server is very much like the telnet
conversation done with the SMTP commands. I tried last night as well. The
telnet connection is made, so you didn't 'block' it; however, SMTP commands
from the telnet session are not replied to.

How did you prevent that?

I just opened a telnet session to smtpgate.buzzsaw.com on port 25 (and
smtpgatent1.buzzsaw.com on port 25) to test for an open relay but all I
got back is:

220-**2**200
***2*2**
2***0*00
220 *

And even a helo command didn't gave me anything. So it looks like you
are very secure.
