RE: Relay Bounce Backs
We experienced some problems too. We did not track it to the precise cause, however we did find that the problem messages were: - Internal recipients only (email delivered to outside source) - The emails were automated using cdo - The specific line causing problems were using the From Field instead of the Sender field in their code o Changed objMessage.Sender = Request.Form(From). The difference between From and Sender is that Sender identifies the user that actually submits the message, but From on the other hand, designates the author(s). Info Found at the link listed below: http://www.ilopia.com/Articles/WindowsServer2003/CDO.aspx Interestingly enough, the messages had no problem until November 2007. At this time we upgraded our IronPort and patched our SMTP servers, and our Exchange Servers. We still are not sure which one caused the issue. Hope this helps. RE: Relay Bounce Backs
Carol, I believe you will find an answer in my earlier post. Your message subject would appear to be from an automated weekly sending. You need to check the code that is creating the messages for the use of the FROM field vs the SENDER field. As an example: Look at the SEND AS function - an administrative assistant can send mail as the boss, however the actual sender is the admin asst. This shows that there are clearly two separate entites defined in two different ways. You are getting a RELAY error. Think about it. Re: Relay Bounce Backs
This is all a best-guess only based on the extremely limited information you have provided us. Typically, a 550 5.7.1 is a spam filter type response. A 5.7.1 is a block due to administrative policy, again, a type of filter (spam filter?) is in place. Again typically, I see 550 5.7.1's when someone has made a mistake in their spam filter config. The verbose part of the message is not always accurate. In some cases it is intentionally misleading. RE: relay problems
I think this isn't a security flaw but by design, since the recipient is in the domain the server is responsible for it accepts and sends the mail. Your server does not appear to allow relaying outside your domain, which is good. It would be a bad thing if it would accept rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] when helo is sent from outside your domain. I am not sure about this, but i think that if you would block this you are not gonna be able to receive mail at all. RE: Relay
Hey John To my knowledge you cannot do this in Exchange 5.5, no idea about 2000. I use Sendmail Switch for my production Mail relays and they can be configured to do so. You may want to telnet to the smtp server in question and give it an HELO and it will give you the relay version you are dealing with. RE: Relay
Another interesting thing. If I do an NSLookup (set type=mx) on their email domain it returns an IP address for the mail exchanger. If I do this on any other domain it gives me an FQDN and then gives the IP of the FQDN later on in the information returned. I tried to do a reverse lookup on their IP and it does not resolve. They can send to us and I can send to them from my Hotmail account. Would this be any reason that I can not send to them from my Exchange server? I attended Michèle's wedding. My guess is since your spare time is used learning XP and MSI, she is 'getting it' more than you. In business, time doesn't stand alone. It is a variable that must also be combined unfortunately with money and effort. My recommendation would be to rebuild the Sendmail server. Then fix the scripts. Then reinstate the Exchange Server. I don;t think you'll get Exchange, which complies to all relevant RFC's, to 'misbehave' in the manner you seek. Siegfried Weber (www.cdolive.com) or Kevin Snookmay provide assistance with possible coding avenues to take, such as an SMTP transport event sink to change the from toa proper SMTP address or something along those lines. I did this and using SAlive made an SMTP connection to the IP address. It connected just fine. This part of the email was what I was zeroing in on: "Given the large number of forms and the weeks of time it will take to fix this properly." I hate to recommend this, but you might be able to use the built-in SMTP server in IIS for what you need. I know that I can throw all sorts of email without regard for its from address with IIS. The P2 fix will do a lookup based on the first last name, only if they exist in the global catalog, which in this case, they dont. Thanks for the tip, looks like I might be putting in sendmail till we can get this fixed properly (yuck) Mike -Original Message- From: Rick Ward - HQ [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 1:56 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Relay - from: address issue It's okay Michael... from the last response sent.. Do you get the idea now. It is going to take me weeks just to get the info out to the field of what they have been doing wrong in the past. Then I will have to justify why it's wrong to use a first and last name instead of an email address, so on and so on. I am just trying to find a way to force Exchange to misbehave long enough for me to fix the real problem, ignorance. Otherwise, I have to dust off my Linux and sendmail books which I really, really, really don't want to do... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 1:34 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Relay - from: address issue You're right that the P2 and P1 stuff will probably solve his problems, but why wouldn't it be possible for the forms to be coded to generate correct addresses? -Michèle Immigration site: http://LadySun1969.tripod.com Our new 2001 Miata: http://members.cardomain.com/bpituley Tiggercam: http://www.tiggercam.co.uk - If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure. -Dan Quayle - -Original Message- From: Rick Ward - HQ [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 4:30 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Relay - from: address issue don't think that's possible Michele... Michael - In 5.5 there are a whole set of new P2 and P1 resolve settings you can add into the registry(Q174755). In Exchange 2000 check out Q288635. Recently I replaced an older Linux + SendMail server that died with an Exchange 2000 server. This server is used primarily as a relay host for a web farm we have. The problem has to do with malformed from addresses. For some reason, there are many forms on the web farm that generate email messages with improper [EMAIL PROTECTED] address in the from: field. Instead, they use first name, last name. It appears that the sendmail server did not care about the from address and would happily send out this type of malformed email message. The problem is that Exchange will not send this type of message. Given the large number of forms and the weeks of time it will take to fix this properly, does anybody know of a way to have Exchange turn off from address validation? This would give me some breathing room till a real solution is worked on. Thanks ahead of time for any help.
