RE: Single Instance Storage ratio survey
I'm at 1.656 with around 500 mailboxes. The database would be, I guess, five or so years old (although we upgraded to Exchange 2007 last summer--not sure if the database-rebuilding that came with that would affect anything). We have a 250 MB mailbox size limit for nearly every user, so they have to clean up regularly--at least messages with attachments, since those eat up their quota pretty quickly. I think the MS KB article overestimates how often most people clean their mail, though. Their example sites 98% of people deleting an organization-wide message after a week. I know for sure that more than 2% of my users are pack rats, though. I'm really not concerned with SIS as it impacts text-only messages so much as I'm worried about messages with attachments. As I mentioned in the NTSysadmin thread, it's not uncommon for attachments to get sent to our org-wide distribution list. And while I've got a 10 MB attachment limit set, even smaller attachments add up in a hurry when sent to 500 users. Those three 1 MB pictures that a user sends out in a message mean 3 MB x 500 = 1.5 GB of storage required if SIS goes away. I think the only thing mitigating this for us is that we have such a restrictive mailbox size set for most users. +1. As I mentioned in another post, we have small mailbox size limits. That's not because I *want* to do that, but because we've *had* to to keep storage at a reasonable level. Although, at this point we've migrated to new equipment with more storage--I think we're at the point where we can loosen things up. If people want or feel like they need to save more messages for a longer period, who am I to tell them otherwise? Re: Single Instance Storage ratio survey
Interesting article. My previous place of employment was at a University. After the tragedy at Virginia Tech (which was only a couple of hours away from us) there was much concern about notifying the campus in the result of an emergency. They were using an e-mail system that was not Exchange and to my knowledge did not have SIS. So when they did their testing to notify students and employees by e-mail (one of several ways they were notifying people) they were actually opening up each person's mailbox and inserting the message. This resulted in an e-mail notification process that took 10-15 minutes. When they started looking at Exchange they were told by Microsoft that the time to send the message would be much shorter...mostly b/c of SIS (which the article TVK posted also indicates.) The talk on the NT SysAdmins list was mostly centered around disk space savings gained from SIS. But I'm wondering now how removing SIS from future versions of Exchange would impact sending e-mail to a large number of people. In the case of the University, the message might only be a few KB, but what is the cost to have to deliver that message to 20k individual mailboxes now? RE: Single Instance Storage ratio survey
One could easily make the argument that the higher the SI Ratio number is for your server (assuming it isn't a brand new server as detailed in the KB), the worse job your users are doing of cleaning their mailboxes regularly. Unless of course you are in the legal industry or something similar where all correspondence must be kept forever. TVK From: Rob Bonfiglio [mailto:robbonfig...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, May 29, 2009 1:35 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: Single Instance Storage ratio survey Interesting article.
I am not saying that all email should be deleted, but as the KB points out, where high numbers come from is when 1 message is sent to hundreds of different mailboxes. I would argue that when that happens, rarely should those messages be kept by all hundreds of recipients for a long period of time. It probably applies to a small subset of those who received it, or it is the typical Don't forget the company picnic this weekend stuff, that everyone gets and not nearly enough people get rid of. Rarely will an email that will save your company's bacon be received by over 100 recipients at one time. Not saying it doesn't happen, just that it would be rare. That is why I would say that on a mature server a number in the 100 range or higher shows a lack of good email hygiene on the server in question. Just how much do people actually benefit from SIS (Single Instance Storage) in Exchange? Would people be willing to share their SIS ratio from their Exchange server(s)? Approximations are fine. For multi-server organizations, an average or just picking a server at random would still inform. I'll start: SIS ratio = 5.6 You can discover the SIS ratio by: 1. Open Performance Monitor (PERFMON.EXE) 2. Select System Monitor on the left 3. Right-click the graph on the right, and pick Add Counters 4. For Performance Object, select MSExchangeIS Mailbox (or similar) 5. Select the Single Instance Ratio counter in the list on the left 6. Select the _ Total instance in the list on the right 7. Click Add 8. If needed, select the resulting counter in the list at the bottom of the graph 9. Adding: 1)Number of users on server 2)Approximate age of server since installation (or DB creation) might be interesting as well. -sc -Original Message- From: Ben Scott [mailto:mailvor...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, May 29, 2009 1:31 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Single Instance Storage ratio survey Hi all, A thread on nt-sysadmin has got me wondering. This idea that one shouldn't use an email system to store email always seemed kind of strange to me. Keep in mind that I'm quite religious about filing mail. My inbox is usually empty, and my Inbox/todo folder typically has 20 messages in it. But I've got hundreds of folders of archived mail, all carefully sorted by project, application, category, etc. It totals around 500 MB for the four years I've been at this company. No idea how many messages. It's all in Public Folders, too, so that the rest of the IT department (i.e., one other guy :-) ) can find stuff if needed. Unless of course you are in the legal industry or something similar where all correspondence must be kept forever. Many people, including myself and many of my cow-orkers, are in the habit of retaining business correspondence forever, just on general principles. RE: single instance storage retention on mailbox move
Not sure on that one. Although I've done several moves, the SIS really wasn't an issue to be worried about (at least, not enough to stop the projects!). The article you reference refers to Exchange 5.5. There's also a snippit from an Exchange 2000 article that reads: Single instance storage is not maintained if you move a mailbox to a different mailbox store, even if that mailbox store resides within the same storage group. Does moving a mailbox via ADUC from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 qualify under this rule? Dunno, as I'd have to test. RE: single instance storage retention on mailbox move
Yes. SIS is retained with the mailbox move process. It is NOT retained with the exmerge process. RE: single instance storage retention on mailbox move
Depends on how you move the mail box. If you use MOVE MAILBOX in Exchange admin, then I believe that you do retain SIS, but you lose any mail that was in the user's Deleted Items Retention area of the Information Store. If you use EXMERGE to move the mail, they you loose SIS.
