Re: [expert] Multilink / EQL ?

1999-08-30 Thread Zak McKracken

Hi DJ,

the only information that I can find about eql is that it is (i believe)
included in the 2.2.xx source, however the eql_enslave program is unusable
for the 2.2.xx kernel. I've been doing some extensive searching for it, but
am unable to find a working version, nor was i able to fiddle with the
eql_enslave.c file to get it working (i'm a _very_ basic hack with c). If
you have any information or ideas as to how we can get this going, would you
be able to post back? I'm stumped for ideas at this point in time. =[

You can use the command like this: append="ide2=0xXXX,X hde=ide-scsi"

Just to answer my own question...

1: /usr/lib/sendmail-cf/README is very useful.

2: I added

FEATURE(relay_local_from)
FEATURE(promiscuous_relay)
FEATURE(accept_unresolvable_domains)

to /usr/lib/sendmail-cf/cf/redhat.mc

3: m4 redhat.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf

Now all the 'sender domain' and relaying checks are disabled.

Re: [expert] Apache and SuExec

1999-08-30 Thread Lee Wilson

OK, I have done this and it mostly works, but you apparently compiled it with
--suexec-caller and --suexec-userdir options that I don't use.

Steve Philip, in another message said that I should put the options I want to
add into a .spec file and do a rebuild. This seems like a good idea, but I
don't have enough information yet.

> Add the options that you want to the .spec file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/
I don't have a /usr/src/redhat directory on the machine. All I have in
/usr/src is:

   RPM/
   linux@
   linux-2.2.9/

should I just create the directory (with nothing in it)? When I
downloaded the source rpm (for an old version), it put all the source in
/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES. There is a SPECS directory in /usr/src/RPM. Is that
the directory you meant?

> then rebuild the package with 'rpm -ba <.spec-file>'.

Once I downloaded the appropriate src rpm for the old version of apache,
it put a apache.spec file in /usr/src/RPM/SPECS, so I think that is the
appropriate file to modify.

So I'll download the src rpm for the netrevolution version of apache and
try it. Thanks for all your help, both of you!

looks like either you didn't install or didn't start the font server.
Install XFree86-xfs, start it with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start
and everything should be ok.

chkconfig xfs on
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start
startx

You'll notice that the errors are about not being able to set the font
path used by the X font server (xfs). That causes it to fail when it
tries to find the default 'fixed' font. BOOM!

Running xfs should clear up the problem.

Add the options that you want to the .spec file in
/usr/src/redhat/SPECS/ then rebuild the package with 'rpm -ba
<.spec-file>'.

Go to http://coruscant.netrevolution.com/pub/NEW and grab the new Apache
1.3.9. It is compiled with SuExec, but has also suexec-frontpage, EAPI,
shared memory, and is compiled with DSO support, so you can use all the

I've had a few crashes (power failures, etc.) which I think are really
screwing up my system. Standard MDK6.0 system, everything but the kernel
upgraded (using 19mdk... 27mdk is no longer in the updates?). Anyways,

[expert] Apache and SuExec

1999-08-30 Thread devnull

I've just installed a fresh installation of Linux-Mandrake 6.0,
and am now trying to configure the web server so that it works the same
way as my web server on my old machine. This has MOSTLY been accomplished
except for one major thing:

I used to have SuExec configured on my old webserver. To do this,
I had to recompile it with the appropriate options and re-install it, etc.
This was using Apache 1.2 before I found RPM's and before APACI.

It appears that the default Apache that comes with Linux-Mandrake
6.0 does not have SuExec compiled in, so I need to recompile it. I have
unzipped the src RPM, but I cannot find in it anywhere what the original
options it was compiled with are.

Does anyone know how to compile this so that it's the same as the
one that comes with the distribution? I can then use those options and
add the ones I need for SuExec.

Yes you can. However, if Windows occupies the lower 4 gig of the hard
drive, then linux may not boot except with a boot floppy if you install
LILO, the linux loader program.

In that case, I recommend you get Partition Magic, which comes with Boot
Magic, and should allow you to boot linux from wherever it is on your hard
drive.

Re: [expert] linux 6.0 instalation question

1999-08-30 Thread Jo

Of course you can. Don't forget that you will need to create at least 2
partitions to install linux: the root (/) and a swap partition (between
48 and 128 kB). You can also choose to put certain directories in a
separate partition, but this only starts to make sense if you have more
than one hard disk (performance) or if you find yourself reinstalling
linux rather often and you want to keep your home directories and other
stuff.
Also, you will need to boot linux from a partition that resides
completely under the 1024 cylinders boundary (about 2 GB). You can make
a small partition (5-10 MB) for this purpose that you would mount as
/boot then.
Hope this helps,

Jo

PS: it's amazing what I learned the past two months!

Just caught this tidbit in the Linux Today press releases and thought it
should be brought to everyone's attention. Mandrake seems to have "won"
the quality award with their 6.0 release. LSL's upcoming "Linux Update"
CD contains all the released updates for the major distributions. Their
release shows Mandrake having the FEWEST UPDATES!

Congrats to the Mandrake team!

[expert] printer database

1999-08-30 Thread Mark Cinelli

http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

Provides a comprehensive database of printers.

You are wise to ask before you buy. The "Winprinter" has become common on the
low end of the price range. The Winprinter offloads the thinking part of
printing onto OS specific software, and that OS is Win95/98, less often it
includes Win31 and NT, and rarely, DOS . There are few, if any , software
drivers for Winprinters under Linux.

The box must list DOS separately if Linux/ghostscript is likely to have a
likely workalike. If it doesn't mention DOS, or says DOS programs
can print under the Win DOS box or Win printing facilities, you likely have a
Winprinter.

I just bought a 697C HP at WalMart for a C note on a closeout. May still be
available.

When I compiled the 3dfx rpm, I had similiar problems. I simply moved
netwave_cs.o out of the pcmcia directory. After I moved it out, I did not
have any problems with the rest of the install.

Just to point to the new kernel. That's all I would
suggest backing up your existing lilo.conf (say by doing a
"cp lilo.conf lilo.bak" or something) and then editing
lilo.conf to point to the new kernel instead of the old one
or to point to the NEW kernel as the default boot and leave
the existing kernel as say "linux-old" or something.

[expert] Slight problem with anonymous BeroFTPD

1999-08-30 Thread Mike Abney

(I've tried to send this once before, but it didn't seem to make it to
the list -- sorry if you get it twice.)

Hey,

I've got the Bero FTP server (latest non-cooker Mandrake RPM of
BeroFTPD) up and running just about the way I want it, but I'm having a
slight problem. When a real user logs in everything gets displayed
properly, including the welcome message. However, when anonymous users
log in I've set up the typical, "You are number %N of %M anonymous users
allowed," welcome message. (Pardon me, if I got the %N and %M wrong, I'm
not anywhere I can look up the right values -- it's right in the actual
file, however.) I've checked (via highlight and click-to-paste) that the
file I've assigned as the anonymous class's login message exists and has
that text in it. But the text never gets displayed.

Any ideas? Is this a known bug of BeroFTPD that I just haven't seen
posted anywhere?

Thanks,

Mike

I was browsing on Linuxberg and found a couple neat-sounding
programs, one called "Ricochet" and another called "Sugarplum."
Ricochet is supposed to bounce SPAM messages back to their original
sender and Sugarplum is supposed to (somehow...haven't looked at the
doco yet ) "poison" SPAMMer databases with so much bogus info that
the databases are either useless or are discarded.

Anyone used either of these Has anyone out there got something
better??? I've become quite adept at tracking down the original
SPAMMER's ISP and getting them booted (many use Hotbot or one of the
other "free" email services, so I guess it's no big loss to them!)
OTOH, if they're using Hotbot or mail.com, I'd love to poison their
databases to they have to go out and spend MORE money for new
databases that I can further poison! I want to make it too
expensive for these a-holes to continue spamming!

Probably need to disable APACHE in Mandrake's startup, I
would guess. I'm in much the same boat as you -- an
experienced neophyte. ;-) I've been running Linux (mostly)
on my machine here at work (occasionally rebooting to
Windows ) for over 6 months. Just last week, I put
the finishing touches (hardware-wise that is) on my SMP
Linux box. Now I have to recompile the kernel. :-) Oh,
well...
Anyhow, APACHE is installed by default, so that's the
likely problem. Type "setup" from the Root console prompt
and disable APACHE under " System Services."

You might take a look at
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi.
According to this site, the BJC-2000 *is* supported by
Linux:
Canon
Perfectly
   BJ-10e, BJ-20, BJ-200, BJ-5, BJC-210, BJC-240, BJC-250, BJC-600, BJC-600,
BJC-610, BJC-620, BJC-70,
   BJC-800, LBP-1260, LBP-1760, LBP-4+, LBP-4U, LBP-8II, LIPS-III
Mostly
   BJ-300, BJC-2000, BJC-4000, BJC-4100, BJC-4200, BJC-4300, BJC-4310SP,
BJC-4400, BJC-7004,
   BJC-80, LBP-4sx

I see that it "MOSTLY" works in Linux. Here's what Grant
Taylor (the site author) says he means by "mostly" :
Mostly
These printers work almost perfectly - funny enhanced resolution modes
may be missing, or the color is
a bit off, but nothing that would make the printouts not useful.

I can send if the user is logged into (telnet) the gateway machine. This
use to be an easy fix on Redhat 5.0 by install the imap package but can't
get it to work with Mandrake. I have looked everywhere but can't find a
simple straight answer without

Subject: [expert] ports 80 & 21 in use

Hi all,
First, let me say I am a little more than a newbie, but a lot less than an
expert, so be gentle!
Right now I am running a web server on a win98 box, Apache 1.3.9 to be
exact. I want to run the server under Linux cause I'm tired of having to
reboot a couple time a week. So this weekend I installed Mandrake 6.0, and
tried installing Xitami web server. (I want the ftp server included with
Xitami ). However when I tried to run it, it said ports 80 & 21 were
already in use. I can run it fine with -d 2000 which moves the ports to
2080 and 2021. However I don't want to have to add :2080, etc. to my ip
address for people to connect. I want to be able to use the default ports.
So my question is, how can I find out what's using 80 & 21, and if I do,
how can I move them to another port so Xitami will be able to access them?
And CAN I do this?

Thanks,
Richard

[expert] Unresolved symbols in 2.2.9-27mdk

1999-08-30 Thread Svante Signell

I have problems compiling the 3dfx device Device3Dfx-2.2-3.src.rpm due
to unresolved symbols in netwave_cs.o. It was also present in the
previous kernel, 2.2.9-19mdk.

depmod -a gives:
/lib/modules/2.2.9-27mdk/pcmcia/netwave_cs.o unresolved symbol(s)

Is it possible to turn this warning off, for example in
/etc/conf.modules. I am not using pcmcia.

Sincerely,
Svante Signell

[expert] Out of Topic Multimode 4 core fiber bandwidth

1999-08-30 Thread hamkas

anyone knows the bandwidth that a four core multimode fiber can carry? I've
heard that for a multimode, one core can carry 100 megabit so 4 cores should be
400 megabit is this correct?
