[expert] Shared printer problem.
I'm trying to share an Epson Stylus Color printer from a Samba server. The printer is directly connected to the servers printer port and I have no trouble printing from the server. However, I have Win 98 clients that cannot connect to the printer. I used swat to setup Samba so I believe that the configuration is correct. Although the Win 98 clients see the printer share they report that it is off-line. I'm thinking that this may be caused by some lack of bi-directional communication between the printer and the Win 98 clients and that the "fix" may be something I need to do on the clients. There has got to be a way to make this work. I use to run an NT server on the very box that the Samba server is currently on and shared this printer with no problems. Help keep me NT free! I'm using Mandrake 6.0 and the most current Mandrake RPM of Samba. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Turn it off. You can turn off some parts of the buffering by using the hdparm command. I don't recall the specifics of tuning the kernel to reduce buffering and caching, but I do remember that there is limited documentation for it in /usr/src/linux/Documentation. That said, it really sounds like there's something drastically wrong with that machine. Machines do not hang and die from buffering and caching. Finally, that buffering of disk reads and writes is giving you performance that you wouldn't get if you did the reads or writes individually. Despite the rate of change that you see, a minute is an eternity to a modern system. The difference between reading data out of a nanosecond cache and a millisecond drive access is huge. -- Steve Philp Network Administrator Advance Packaging Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My hardware is different- I do *not* have a SCSI BIOS, nor do I need one- I don't need to boot off any drive in my SCSI chain. I have only the AIC-6360 chip itself. [expert] Midgard and PostgreSQL
Am I loony, or does Midgard not support PostgreSQL? I finally got PostgreSQL figured out, and now it doesn't look like I can use it with Midgard! I'm using Midgard, alone, for my PHP3 stuff... mod_php3 is not installed. When I try to do a pg_connect() in my webpages I keep getting errors about unknown command, yet the docs that come with Midgard (the PHP docs) have PostgreSQL commands in them... I'm really confused... I've spent too much time on this and it's getting frustrating! Do I need to remove Midgard and use mod_php3? Or do I need to use mySQL instead of PostgreSQL? I want my web pages to access a database so I can store all my links in a database, but I'm having no luck doing it. Can I have Midgard and mod_php3 running together and have it work with PostgreSQL? I have mySQL installed on here, but it looks really clumsy compared to PostgreSQL... and someone should fix those init scripts so that they use chkconfig... =) Or at least patch them for Mandrake so that they do. What would be the easiest solution? I find PostgreSQL much easier to use than mySQL, so I'd prefer to use pgsql. Should I remove midgard and put mod_php3 on the system instead? Help! Re: [expert] vmware hardware compatibility
I've used it on a 233mhz K5, and performance was acceptable. I had 128meg of ram. That is most critical. NT really settles down when you use 64 meg of ram for it, and hardly swaps to disk. VMWARE emulates a soundblaster. It feeds the commands to the linux sound card. I've had very poor results with sound, but that isn't what I'm running NT under linux for anyway. I've never really played with it to get it to work right. vmware has a 30 day license they will automatically e-mail to you. It lets you try before you buy. I've found some older software (mainly dos based stuff) doesn't like the virtual machine. Other than that, it works very well. bug On Sat, 9 Oct 1999, David van Balen wrote: > > I'm considering trying out vmware using linux as host and running nt as a > guest os. Sure will... Make sure you have ram.. :) (SQL 7.0 would probably run a bit better than 6.5.. 7.0 is a bit more dynamic in its memory allocation..) SQL 6.5 needs predefined memory pages setup.. that could be -SLOW- if you are using VMWare on a machine that has less than 256 megs of ram.. $.02 .mark Brian wrote: > will sql server run in vmware? > > On Sat, 09 Oct 1999, you wrote: > > Op Sat, 09 Oct 1999, schreef u: > > > I've ran VMWARE on a P233 and ran Win95 quite happily. Re: [expert] Re: [newbie] vmware hardware compatibility
It sounds like the only problem that may happen with Mandrake 6.1 and VMWare is the 'Mandrake Custom Kernel'.. though, you can get around this issue by simply recompiling the kernel with a non-mandrake release stamp on it. You can get it at kernel.org or any other place that offers it. I plan on doing that when the final non pre-release of the 2.2.13 kernel is finished... (Or any other kernel..) It is not a problem with -mandrake- or -redhat- or any other distribution.. its all linux.. and the problem is with the kernel. (I went through the same ordeal with getting my Sound Blaster live to work with Redhat 6.0 stock release...) I downloaded a new kernel.. recompiled it to my box.. and I was up and running.. if you have never recompiled a kernel before, don't let it scare you .. just read the readme's and you should be off and rolling.. also, if you compile and copy the image to a floppy.. ('cp /usr/src/linux/arch/boot/bzImage /dev/floppy')... you can safely experiment with different configurations without fear of rendering your box bootless... (Shame on you if you don't have an emergency disk anyways...) don't let VMWare scare you from using a kick ass distribution such as Mandrake.. Kinda funny how these distributions are starting to hack their kernels tho... hehehehe BTW, all this is my opinion.. hehehe... .mark Dan Swartzendruber wrote: > At 02:03 PM 10/9/99 +0200, Immanuel Derks wrote: > >Op Sat, 09 Oct 1999, schreef u: > >> I've ran VMWARE on a P233 and ran Win95 quite happily. Consequently, even if the compilation of the module was successful, the module would not load into the running kernel. In my /usr/src dir., I have 2 dirs, called linux and linux-2.2.9. [expert] Re: [newbie] vmware hardware compatibility
I've ran VMWARE on a P233 and ran Win95 quite happily. Don't think about running WIN98 or NT because that will be just too slow. About your soundcard: as long as your soundcard works in Linux, VMWARE will support it. It only emulates a SB16 in the guest OS, meaning that to have sound in the guest OS you have to install the SB16 drivers. All in all, VMWARE is a very good and clever product. I haven't ran accross one single app that doesn't run on the guest OS (as long as you don't want to run apps that rely on low level hardware acces, say you have a CDR on your host OS, but you won't be able to use that as a CDR in VMWARE, only as a CD). I recently read in a leading UK PC magazine (PCPLUS) that Vmware was a clever but stupid and useless product. I don't agree!
