[expert] Out Out Out, damned spot....
I sent a message to the list when sendmail and pop3d didn't quite work. I was also having authentication problems with Samba and finally partial success with the IP masquerade. OK, I suspected hardware. Caldera 2.3 crashed on install--a total freeze when it tried to detect the mouse. SuSE 6.1 could not mount some installation files/packages off the CD-ROM RH 6.0 could run only the transmit side of a 3C509 The server is now down, permanently. It was scraps anyway, but it appears I have memory that will pass the prelim test from the BIOS and then quietly fail under normal operation. (pattern sensitivity?). I am deeply impressed with the design of linux, since it kept going with only some loss of services. Win95 would stay up only a few minutes. Thanks for your good advice along the way. Turns out, I had the appropriate ipop3d line in /etc/inetd.conf uncommented in the beginning. Now when I get something in its place, if it still doesn't work. I always suspect that the problem with the computer has its hands on my keyboard first. Then I start thinking about hardware. That is an advantage with Linux. With Win9x and NT, I could never tell what I should check, and I just had to live with most of the problems that developed. Civileme

Dear Mandrake users, Does anybody know how to set write permission for users to a FAT32 partition under MDK6.1 linux? As root I am able to read and write the mounted Windows partitions. You might be interesting in browsing some of the "Linux in Business" sites to see exactly what Linux is being used for in the real world. For the most part, you'll find that Linux IS being taken seriously by the business and Internet communities. Google (search engine) is run entirely on Linux. Deja News also runs Linux. Cisco uses Linux as a global print server solution. Finally, it's important to note that the experience you gain with Linux is useful across any of the other platforms you mention. [expert] Many 6.1 mandrakes?
I downloaded the 6.1 iso during the first week it was available and installed it on a few machines. I've been having trouble installing it on one box (kfm button pixmaps won't show up), so I thought I would try a retail version of 6.1 (MacMillans version) thinking I may have a flaky disk. I'm still having the same pixmap trouble, but it also seems there are differences between the two iso images. Build numbers on the kde rpms, and the default use of the new icons were a few things I noticed on the MacMillan disk (older builds). Does anyone know what the diffs are between the two. And does anyone have a fix for the pixmap thing. Thanks. -- Brett Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I installed 6.1 on this server. 6.0 broke things every time I tried to install the kernel 2.2.9-27mdk upgrade. Now I cannot get sendmail/pop to authenticate users. I have the simplest of ipchains-- ipchains -P forward DENY ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward And it worked fine with 6.0 but is stopping port 80 on 6.1--mail to outside SMTP and POP servers is moving normally, and I can ping anything on the internet from my server (except microsoft and a select few who don't accept icmp). OK I was using the infomagic workgroup server for quite a while. I had two servers fried by the electrical setup in this building. (separate circuits with a common neutral was triggering my UPS every time someone used the copier. Then with depleted battery I got a series of rapid power cycles--not completely off- just to a brownout stage every time someone hit the start button on the copier, and lasting 15-20 seconds. Well, that problem is corrected, and next time I'll inspect the electrical circuits myself instead of relying on electricians and as-builts. Now, I have a server built from scraps until the budget can be modified. The scraps include a drive the Workgroup Server cannot handle. I seem to have most things working. The email goes out. The email comes in and is queued, and there is a pop3d running. The user files have been preserved through all of this, and they were assigned back to the users as I loaded new user info. Passwords for Samba were also generated. The winboxes out there can see their home directories but cannot connect to them. The error message is the typical Windows (share cannot be found, check your spelling) THe email appears to connect but we get POP3 error, contact your system administrator. It appears to be an authentication problem. What has changed? My soon to be migrated winboxes are all enabled for plain text passwords, and so is samba on the spit and string server. Logs show permission denied for Samba connections (for changing directory to user's home directory). Normal movement of mail is recorded. Can anyone see the obvious that I must be missing? [expert] Mandrake in the REAL WORLD.
I'm studying for my Cisco CCIE certification. As a network administrator I haven't stayed up with the progress of Linux in the Internet world, but 80% of the routing/switching market for the Internet is Cisco. Up until the last year or so, Solaris was also considered to have about 70-80% of the Server market share as well. I really want to strategically place myself in the Internet community. I know NT very well and have some hands on with Digital Unix and Solaris. However, it's much easier to take two of my x86 boxes and my two Alphas and build a Linux farm, thus pushing Linux to the max by getting hands on experience. My only concern is the seriousness of Linux in the Commerce/Business world of the Internet. Are companies like Broadcast.com, CDNow, iD, etc. going to seriously consider Linux as an option? Or is it the poor mans server OS? Mark

Re: [expert] Netscape 4.7
the mandrake page is in the script file that mandrake uses to call the netscape binary file. it is simple to remove from there. do a search for netscape and then look inside the file, it check to see if you have the navigator or communicator versions installed and then starts it with that file as a cla. Hi, Before anything else: I upgraded from RedHat 5.2 to Mandrake 6.0 My problem: I start a terminal session from a non-root account in my KDE. I want to verify my backup and start a root session by 'su' If I start xbru: I get the following message: - Message - Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 KEY Application initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ":0.0" Error in startup script: invalid command name "bind" End of Message -- Before my upgrade I never had a problem running xbru as root, from within a non-root terminal. Is it : -Linux Mandrake upgrade? Security? -Xbru? Any help or directions are welcome. Thanks Herman

I hope I can rely on you for some questions on mail-files. I know about the /var/spool/mail/username (you forgot the mail directory ;-) ) I see in my home directory lots of mail directories: -nsmail : this one is created by Netscape? -ns-imap : -in another home directory I do find different subdirectories like Sent, Inbox etc... -Mail : created by pine? Anyways: Do you have any idea how I can setup my Linux box - and how that is related to clients. I am using imap (at home) and netscape client on a Windoze box. I use imap because my family can use any network connected PC and still have access to their mail - which is never downloaded to local Windoze boxes. When I last started Netscape it found about every file and directory in my son's home directory. And this was not what I wanted to do: I only wanted to have the mail-directories, appearing in the Netscape client (setup as imap). Any directions are welcome, Thanks Herman

While I'm sure a mountable partition will not affect boot, you may see issues down the road when you go to compile, tar, or archive. Several folks on other lists have commented that fdisk has reported bogus cylinders beyond reality. The average symptom seems to be an inability to "make". Any idea what your partition table was like under 6.0? I do not recall if you stated that you've repartitioned or not As far as the lilo thing goes, you may try generating a boot disk, verifying that it works, and then use DOS fdisk and run "fdisk /mbr" to wipe the FAT. You will need to reinstall LILO at that point. Good Luck! Don :=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=: Donald R. RE: [expert] intel video chipsets
It sounds like you've no idea who made the board - if you can locate an FCC ID you _may_ be able to trace it to the manufacturer at: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/ I have had varying success using this site to trace $10 sound cards and $20 video boards... you may find that the chipset is an equivalent to something a bit more "known" Speaking of $20.00 video cards - perhaps you can disable the on-board & get something else?
