You need to do it as part of the mount options, which are configured
in /etc/fstab

The easiest way is probably to use linuxconf, go to File systems, then
Access local drive, click on the device in the list and the opup
tabbed window contains a tab Dos options, in which you can specify a
default user id and a default group id to be used when the partition
is mounted.

Think that covers it.

[expert] Group Owner Of Dos Partitions

2000-05-24 Thread Adam Talbot

Hi. I've just setup Linux and I've got a user (me) that I want to
give access to the dos partitions (/mnt/DOS_hda1...) but I can't seem to
do that. I've tried changing the owner of these partitions (chgrp and
chown) but it says I can't do that. I've also tried changing the access
rights (chmod) but that doesn't work either.
I was wondering how I can give a user write access to these
partitions?

Thanks,

Sounds to me like you should do a server install. I use the expert

I've installed both Redhat 6.1 and Mandrake 7.0 and as far as I could
tell, the maximum-customizability options ("expert" in Mandrake) both
gave about as much control as one could ask for, except for the stupid
Mandrake feature to limit you to 50% of your partition size.

Has that restriction been lifted in 7.1 (in expert mode)?

The policy of the "Creator" of qmail is to not distribute qmail in binary
mode, although at least the policy has changed, BUT, some of addons qmail
like Ucspi-tcp, daemontools, is still in policy to NOT distribute in binary
mode.
And qmail without that addons will be useless.
For example, you run qmail under inetd and not from tcpserver (from
ucspi-tcp), then you can't send email using that mailserver.

[expert] X over SSH - How???

2000-05-24 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko

Please help me to find out how to be able to run X
over a SSH connection through a firewall by
pointing to an appropriate resource, or by giving
an advice from your own experience as I've run
out of ideas. I'm running Mandrake 7.0 on a
firewall/ftp server and on a desktop behind that
firewall at home. I am able to ssh into the
firewall and from it into the main machine. My
understanding is that I can't ssh directly into
the main PC as it's hidden behind the firewall and
has a bogus IP (192.168.2.2), can I?
Anyway, I really need to be able to start another
session of X through the ssh connection or if it's
not possible I'd like to be able to run vnc
through the same ssh connection. I've tried both
to no avail as I always get an error that system
can't connect to X server. Is it because I ssh to
it from a firewall which doesn't run x or what?
I'm sorry if it sounds completely confusing, but
this is the last source of help I can turn to and
I can provide more information on the setup if
necessary.

  Thank you.

[expert] New system setup

2000-05-24 Thread Joseph S. Gardner

Greet's,

Finally got all the parts for my new Athlon system in and was wondering
how best to do this next part.

What are the benefits of a "server" install .vs. "developement" and
"recommended"?

I'd like to use my new machine for a server and enable NIS/NFS to
centralize my home network so that all users get their prefered settings
etc. I also plan to configure all users to have access through my DSL
modem via a separate firewall/gateway machine and was wondering if it is
necessary to set the security levels to something stronger than "low" -
figured that the firewall should be able to keep out prying eyes.

All suggestions welcome.

comments on THEIR GUI installer. However, I've seen your

"old" versions with your updatesyou only provide
updates for the current version, which sucks! Please ask

It depends on your ISDN card. If you have a terminal adapter card you can
set it up with isdn-utils, and then use it as a regular modem at /dev/ttyI0

Did you asign your printer a name other than lp? If so you have to tell
lpr to send to that printer's queue instead of to the default queue,
lp. If you named your printer fred, print to it with:

lpr -Pfred file.txt

[expert] Printing et al

2000-05-24 Thread John Rye

Hi all

After several weeks of reinstalling the reinstall from the
previous several reinstalls from scratch I finally have Linux 6.1 (I think)
running..Well sort of...

I have have a couple of problems which have stumped me.

I am able to print test pages from printtool but for some reason cannot
print from anywhere else.. I suspect that I may have some kind of
lock in the spooler but haven't been able to locate it...

The second is only cosmetic but one I find quite annoying.

When the system boots there are scads of confirmation messages.
The first bunch up to the point where the Penguin is displayed don't
cause me any distress. But immediately X starts up there are what
appear to be several screenfulls of messages to do with the video
card - Is there any way that this material can be supressed??

Can someone point me in the right direction???

Cheers

I'll bet I know what happened: you filled your root partition! That's what
has caused me to get that message. Check its space with df, and if I'm
right, it's time to start deleting some stuff. The easiest tool I've found
for that purpose is mc.

so does this mean I get to have EVERYTHING installed, if I have, say, 20 GB
of free diskspace? I just tried mandrake 7 beta 2 yesterday, but I really,
really missed some kind of 'install EVERYTHING' feature. Well, maybe I just
overlooked it?

btw, I also got the following error (during beta 2 install) when I was just
about to set the time zone:

"An error has occurred
cannot list the available zoneinfos."

It happens no matter what install procedure I choose (recommended, cust.,
expert, - normail, devel., server)

I have an Asus P2B mobo running an Intel Pentium II 450 mhz cpu.

If anybody cant help me out on this me, please let me know

Who is running the DNS for DOMAIN.COM? You need a entries for
ANYTHING.DOMAIN.COM.
Does "nslookup anything.domain.com" work?

I'm working on a project.
I've got a DOMAIN.COM
Now I want 3rd level domains,
using Apache Name-Based Virtual Hosts:
I made: ANYTHING.DOMAIN.COM

I do not operate my own DNS.
My provider says it should work.

I want the same effect as bigstep.com...
... you know: yourcompany.bigstep.com

Questions:

#1 I cannot even PING anything.domain.com

#2 I tried putting anything.domain.com
in the /etc/hosts file, it works, but
   that's cheating.

#3 What should I do?

Don't get me wrong,
I LOVE Mandrake!

In fact,
I'm running MDK 7.0 at home, (w/ scanner!)
MDK 7.0 in one office desktop
MDK 6.1 in 4 server / desktops
RH 6.0 in 1 server
RH 6.2 in 1 desktop

I had the same problem. I linked gd-1.3 statical to mrtg and
it works very well.

I think I'll switch to rrdtool soon which works with recent
gd-libs so there's no need for gd-1.3 anymore.

Actually, the preference is for postfix. Some Mandrake staffers
actually think of sendmail as a security hole at best :)

:~>This is constructive criticism for MDK7.0

Too late, sorry. Shop is closed, we only accept cryticizm on 7.1 now .-)

:~>I absolutely adore MDK6.1 (the best!)

:~>#1 Install TAKES TOO LONG!
:~>#2 Install is TOO BIG!

Well, in "recomended" (now called Authomated) mode installer just tries to
make you happy by putting as much as your HD can take to HD. If there is
no place on HD, packages are dropped from install based on how
good|important we think them to be.

For more controle over install, use "customized".

:~>#3 Install lost the customizability of old redhat.

Absolutely not.

:~>#4 cacheing DNS files not created by install: /var/named
:~>missing.

hm. Caching DNS config is in caching-nameserver-6.0-3mdk.noarch.rpm

:~>#5 No text install?

Yes text install ;->>

:~>#6 Should Let user choose between Postfix and Sendmail.

should:

rpm -e postfix; urpmi sendmail

It is not fancy, graphical, or "during install", but it looks simple
enough to me. And I am not a friend of postfix either.

:~>nifty,
:~>does this has any implications for VNC?

AFAIK, Every program you start from your X-session will still be a
doughter process of ssh-agent. terminals, additional X-sessions...

However, AFAIK ssh|scp|slogin are the only programs which make use of the
RSA private/public key authentication found in ~/.ssh dir.

If you want a secure conection with VCN, you will have to tunnel it trough
a secure channel as described here:

http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshwin.html

By the way, ssh-tunneling is a great tool: basically it can crypt ANY kind
of communication bgetween two machines, withouth changing a thing in a
program used to comunicate!
