Well after disabling a few items, I'm back in! To resolve this problem, I booted to failsafe(Grub) and did and interactive boot. [expert] Linuxconf Problem
This is a problem with Linuxconf on Mandrake 6.1, so with any luck it has already been repaired. I installed the dhcp server on my system, and everything appeard to run fine. Then I found myself rebooting from time to time, and noticed that, while the Sys V startup sequence said dhcpd started sucessfully, it was DOA after I had booted. H So I checked in /var/log/messages, and found out that linuxconf was shutting it down so that it could start it up with its own, incorrect, configuration. Which, of course, failed. I never did like Linuxconf, as it seems to have been written by a bunch of Redmondians with a "we're from Linuxconf and we know more about what you are doing than you do". Linuxconf appears to Windoz-ize my computer, i.e. take it over and do strange things I didn't want it to do. OK, fine, I found the place in Linuxconf where apparently you can diable Linuxconf's control over dhcpd, and tried do disable it. No go, Linuxconf was still killing off a sucessfully running daemon. So I said, screw it, and took Linuxconf out of my Sys V init, for all run levels. Now dhcpd starts at, and continues to run, after boot. Anyway, the Mandrake gurus might want to check to see if Linuxconf still has this bug, and if so report it to the authors of Linuxconf. I've never liked Linuxconf, and will probably kill it off and put webmin on or continue to administer my system the old fashioned way, with emacs and kill. -- -- C^2 No windows were crashed in the making of this email. I've changed monitors several times due to demoing linux in different places. I use linuxconf to set the boot mode to 3 then when I start linux with the new monitor, I run xf86config from the console. When I have X running with startx they way I want, I use linuxconf to reset the boot mode back to 5, and I'm ready for the next demo. If I',m going to be using this monitor for demos at another date I save my config file with a name that IDs the location, then rename my original config file back and I'm ready for home use again. It was me Charles During boot just after the kernel is uncompressed and the system checks your drives you will see the Line "Welcome to Linux-Mandrake. Enter [I] for Interactive Startup" You will then see a listings of processes as they are being started with the notation of either OK or failed. I thnk of it as the OK screen, at any rate as soon as you see this message enter shift I and you will go into interactive startup and you will have to answer Y(yes) or N (no) as to wheather to start each process. Just enter Y for each one untill you come to X and then enter N. When you get to the login promt login as root and you should be able to reconfigure X and enable it to autostart. It does work . I had to do it myself when a monitor died while my system was still running and I installed a new monitor that could not run at the same res and sync. Re: [expert] X configuration still a pain in the ....
I try to avoid booting into a graphical login...I have seen it cause too many problems, one of which is what you're describing. When you change monitors, it is easiest to log into a terminal (init 3) and vi the /etc/X11/XF86Config (or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4) file(s) to reflect the new monitor's horz/vert frequency ranges. Save the chagnes and then startx. MDK has never configured my monitor(s) correctly, and I have always had to do this before running X. If I don't make this change, X tries to start, the screen goes black, and will sit there until I hit CTRL-ALT-BackSpace. Or if it hangs completely, I have to reboot. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Eric Mings" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > I recently made the mistake of trying to change monitors on a linux > box I have. I'm having trouble using the tcsh shell. Specifically, the shell init files have been giving me errors. I tried playing around with them, but haven't had much luck. I recently made the mistake of trying to change monitors on a linux box I have. Since then I have had nothing but grief. The original install process of Mandrake does a fairly good job of setting up X, but trying to upgrade something later still seems a lot of voodoo. I tried using XF86Setup and Xconfigurator and eventually gave up and put back the old monitor. Problem is now I can't boot into init 5. It always gives the error: server/usr/X11R6/bin/X cannot be executed It then goes into init 3, and I can successfully get into kde by entering a startx command. I would hope that making upgrading Monitors as easy as the other hardware that is autodetected now might one day (7.2?) happen. Obviously I screwed up something during my efforts to upgrade. Hi, I downloaded new openssl and openssh for my 7.1 os. I installed openssl etc, and when I went to install openssh I got the following unsatisfied dependency error. `rpmlib versioned unsatisfied dependencies <=3.0.3_1' When I downloaded the rpm's for openssh, it listed the required dependencies. openssl and zlib Both of which I have installed. Where can I find `rpmlib > 3.03_1? :) much thanks, mrweb Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Hmm, are you using IDE or SCSI? If you're using IDE, try putting the CD-Rom and CD-R on different "chains", so that one is on secondary master and the other on secondary slave. [expert] Memory Size
A lot of earlier linux books indicate that the kernel does not properly understand memory greater than 64 megs unless you add a memory size statement to lilo or at a boot prompt. I am running Mandrake 7 on one machine with 320 megs of memory. Using the kde system info (memory) panel it gives what appears to be inconsistent and unreliable reports of the amounts of free, shared, and buffer memory on the machine. Does this reflect the need to have such a memory statement in lilo with Mandrake 7 or is it more likely something else (such as a bug in the memory info program) ? -- Regards, Eric Mings Ph.D. Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

I don't think it's CPU related: I am looking in the direction of interrupts etcetera. I narrowed down the problem to the following situation: it only happens when I do *data* burning *on the fly*, i.e. directly from cd-rom to cd-rw (audio on-the-fly would probably cause the same but I don't do that). It does not happen when I burn an image from HD. More suggestions? Thanks in advance Felix -- Let op nieuw mobiel nummer -- Ir F.K.K. RE: [expert] Limit telnet access
Try reading through the /etc/security/access.conf file for examples of syntax on how to disallow logins (console and remote). "man login" will give you the scoop. The file /etc/usertty allows you to setup quite elaborate definitions of host, groups, and users that are able to login to the system. Is is possible to disable the telnet remote access to certain users in a Linux system? I mean, to say what users can remotely access to the computer and who cannot. [expert] making a usable floppy disk
Hi, After I formay it with "fdformat /dev/fd0H1440", how do I create a filesystem on it? Would it simply be "mkfs -V -c /dev/fd0", or is there some other mk* command that I haven't found? Well, but that's very hardly noticeable. Sure, every program grabs as much of the CPU, memory, cache etc.pp. as it can get, but cdrecord definitely isn't the worst example. Here, I don't have any problems burning a CD and surfing the web. Maybe it is because I use SCSI, dunno. What you just noticed is, that the numbers are sorted in an "alphabetical"/ASCII-way. Because 1 is smaller than 10, it comes first. And because everything starting with 2 is bigger than anything starting with a 1 it comes after that. If you have any influence, make sure that the digits are left-padded with zeroes, so that you have 01, 02, This way you'll get the sort order you want.
