Re: [expert] Survey (was Thanks Civileme)

2002-08-14 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

You seem to be assuming that the only way to contribute to a distribution is to
pay money to its makers. Mandrake has many volunteers who contribute their time
and efforts instead of money. I am one such person. Often these contributions
can far outweigh the cost of a boxed set or Club subscription.

Paying money to a distribution company/organisation is a relatively new
phenomenon. Traditionally in the free software/open source community, if you
like something and want to give something back in return, you use your own
blood, sweat and tears. IMHO, it is these people who are keeping the true spirit
of the community alive.

This is partly why I am suggesting to the New Zealand Open Source
Society a survey on NZ Linux users to survey financial support for Linux
distros. I have drafted the following questions, on which folks may
 like to improve:

1)Have you ever contributed financially to a Linux distribution?
  1.1.Yes
  1.2.No, but perhaps I should
  1.3.No, I never will
  1.4.No, I contribute code instead
1.5.No, but I do a lot of testing of beta releases
1.6.No, I use a distribution that requires no revenue
2)If yes, did you contribute via:
  2.1.Purchasing a boxed set
  2.2.Making a donation
2.3.Paying for services (e.g. Mandrake Club, Red Hat Network)
  2.4.Buying shares
 3)If yes, have you contributed:
  3.1.Regularly
  3.2.Occasionally
  3.3.Only once
 4)If yes, to which distribution(s):
  4.1.Mandrake
  4.2.Red Hat
  4.3.Suse
  4.4.Debian
  4.5.Gentoo
  4.6.Sourcemage
  4.7.Other: __
5)Do you think contributing financially is a good idea?
5.1.No, Linux is free and users should never have to pay anything for
 it
5.2.Yes, distribution companies and volunteers have to survive somehow
6)Is Linux and open source software generally a social good in the sense
of values like openness and cooperation, in contrast to piracy and
secrecy that often accompanies closed source software?
6.1.Yes, Linux use should be encouraged
6.2.No, Microsoft is correct when they describe core Linux philosophies
 as being like a cancer
6.3.I don't have a clue what is being asked
  6.4.Other:
7)If you answered No to 5 and Yes to 6, how to you envisage developers
of open source software should be paid? ___
8)Do people who distribute self-burned Linux CDs in NZ have a moral
obligation to contribute financially to the Linux distributions they are
 selling:
  8.1.Yes
  8.2.No
9)Do you believe commercial Linux distributions are:
9.1.Doomed to failure because of the licensing scheme of the GPL
9.2.Potentially have a healthy future as more people use Linux
  9.3.Don't know
10)Who are you representing when answering this survey:
  10.1 commercial business
  10.2 government agency
  10.3 non-profit organisation
  10.4 private non-commercial user
  10.5 other: ___

Overall I think a survey like this is a good idea because it would be
 useful for:
 1. Finding out the attitudes and actions of NZ Linux users
 2. Potentially be useful to Linux distributions who do require
revenue / income from users
 3. Raise consciousness and debate over the need for financial
contributions
 4. Identify how many users give something back, and not just
take
 5. There would be no identification of who filled it out, so it
should be practically anonymous (except for IP I guess)
 6. Generate publicity for the NZ Open Source Society (which is
 just starting up)

[expert] console cd roms contents problems

2002-08-14 Thread falcaraz

Dear friends,
I am testing Beta 9.2 and I have a problem that I had also in the beta
1; I can see the contents of the cdroms (I have two cdrom drivers) using
konqueror or similar graphics applications (krusader, nautilus,..) but
if I try to do that from a console, even with the konqueror showing the
cd contents, I have the next message when using the command ls:

ls: .: Stale NFS file handle

I can move throughout the cdrom directories if I know the names of them,
but never ls shows me the contents.

Could be a bug or what?

I must say that ls runs fine for harddisk contents.

Now, I've no longer got nfs. I finally removed all Bastille

I can do a service nfs restart and directly run rpc.nfsd
 and then I get:

 [root@darkforce darklord]# rpcinfo -p

 1000213 udp 32771 nlockmgr
 1000214 udp 32771 nlockmgr

Now, nfs is up and running. Until I reboot. Then I have to go
 thru the same
 thing again.

 So my questions are:

How to get nfs auto running at boot up again?

How can a person use Bastille so that it doesn't kill nfs and
 your LAN?

 Thanks everyone...

[expert] 2 TV questions

2002-08-14 Thread J Herzfeld

Background

ATI TV wonder VE

card =64(?)
tuner type= 17
attached to cable TV

Soundblaster Live sound card

Program being used
xawtv 3.58(?)

First one is off topic, but maybe someone here knows.

Is there a maximum length cable run before the TV signal gets
degraded? The run from the junction inside the house to my Linux
box is 125 ft (I do have a lot of slack so I could shorten this by 50
ft or more). I also have cables running to 2 televisions. Do these
runs get included in the maximum allowable lenght?

My picture is pretty good, but not great. In full screen it looks a bit
grainy. In am running 1200x1000 (appx) in 16bit (I cant remember
exactly since I am not at my linux box now)

2. Sound. Sound works, but it doesnt seem to be controlled by
xawtv. I use the kmix to control the volume. The mute control in
xawtv and the volume controls do nothing to sound levels. The
problem is that when I quit the xawtv, the sound keeps playing!

The only things I load in modules.conf
is the card and the tuner. I dont have anything for tvmixer or tvaudio

Thanks!!

I have the same cards (both TV Wonder VE and SB Live). The picture is
definitely a problem with the card itself, because an All-In-Wonder 128
using the same cable looks perfect. I think I paid $19US after rebate

[expert] Autoloading a module

2002-08-14 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I've bought a D-Link DWL-650 pcmcia wireless card that's recognized by MDK8.2
and wvlan_cs module is loaded automagically when the card is inserted.

But as connection sometimes hangs and I have not been able to use it in
ad-hoc mode (only in managed) I'd like to try orinoco and wavelan_cs modules
but...

What's the easiest way of changing the default module to be loaded when the
card is inserted? Should I modify /etc/pcmcia/config ?

I've already tryed the following:
1. Card is inserted,
2. ifconfig eth0 down is run,
3. wvlan_cs module is unloaded
4. orinoco (or wavelan_cs) modules are loaded... but then ifconfig eth0 up
doesn't work.

Help is appreciated. Thanks ;)

Greetings security employers:

I have an unusual situation that I would like to describe to you, and in
doing so I am asking that anyone who can immediately employ me in the
San
Fransisco Bay Area, please read this email and consider taking advantage
of my availablity and temporarily low cost.

I am...
o a seasoned professional with extensive security skills and experience
 o a once convicted hacker (DOD, 1998)
o local to the San Fransisco Bay Area, I live in Oakland
o willing to work for mimimum wage (for the next two months)
 o eager to work 60 hour weeks; I don't mind nights/weekends/holidays

My Skills
I am considered by many to have expert level proficiency at both
penetration testing and network intrusion detection. I am also skilled
at
vulnerability research, firewall configuration, unix system
administation
(solaris, linux, *bsd), web administration/development, security policy
development, and I even do windows.

My Conviction (why I am desperate)
I am not proud of being convicted of a felony, but it is important
that
a potential employer know of my status. Apparently if you have FDIC
insurance there is a clause stating that you cannot hire a convicted
hacker on your projects. It is also because of my status that I am
desperate for security-related or even internet-related work.
The truth is, I am living in a federal halfway house transitioning out
of prison back into society. I have to find local work to meet their
requirements, and they haven't approved any telecommute offers I have
had
so far. The director of the facility told me that if I don't find a job
in the next week or so he will send me back to prison (my sentence
actually ends October 12th). Now, maybe he will be more compassionate
and
see that I have made extraordinary efforts to find a job, but either way
I
really need work right now. I have been showing up at places that farm
out manual labor, 5:30am, and still haven't found any work. My
situation
is just ridiculous.

My Location
I deeply appreciate the offers I have had for telecommute work, but
unfortunately I need local employment for at least the next several
months. I live in Oakland, but I can commute to anywhere that BART
reaches.

My Price
I am willing to work for minimum wage for the next few months. Surely
there is some open position at a security company in the area - hire me
as
a janitor but give me a cubicle and I'll do vulnerability research or
help
with security audits or have me sling html or whatever is useful to you,
who will know? The last half dozen employers I have had paid me at
least
$100/hr for my time, now I am only asking for $6.75. If it came down to
it, I would be willing to sign an agreement whereby I will repay all
wages
after a certain amount of time (I do need money like anyone else, but
that
is secondary to having a job - my very freedom depends on getting a job
in
the area). Seriously, this is your chance to get someone who really
knows
what they are doing, cheap. If you can put me to work immediately,
please
do.

1000213 udp 32771 nlockmgr
1000214 udp 32771 nlockmgr

Now, nfs is up and running. Until I reboot. Then I have to go
thru the same
thing again.

So my questions are:

How to get nfs auto running at boot up again?

How can a person use Bastille so that it doesn't kill nfs and
your LAN?

Thanks everyone...

Well in /etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg examine these lines

TCP_LOCAL_SERVICES=

You need to put in the ports you want to use locally there, separated by
blanks with a colon between low and high for a range

Also there is a trusted interface line for LOCAL which will be just lo
or loopback change it to include the interface for the local net

for portmap/nfs you need 109:111 but I usually trust the whole local
net unless it is a workplace environment and use 15:65535

Bastille-Chooser of course makes very very conservative choices.

But these guys are right--there is no substitute for knowledge when
firewalling. And if you hand edit with one thing at a time (and no need
to use vi--there are other editors, use what you are comfortable with
but run it out of a su terminal) then the backup file left by the text
editor is a traceback to what you had before you made a mistake--so each
mistake becomes a learning experience.

Re: [expert] Preventing msec from changing file permissions

2002-08-14 Thread Aleksey Y Naumov

Chuck, thanks for the valuable advice! I created
/etc/security/msec/perm.local with just one line:

/home/PgDB postgres.postgres 700

and it seems to have done what I want (after running 'msec' of course).
Thanks a bunch!

Daniel, thanks for the links, I'll definitely check the info. Just wanted
to get this working first :)

 Dear experts,

Trouble is, this is my data directory for PostgreSQL database, so it has
 to have permission 700, i.e.:
 drwx--6 postgres postgres 4096 Aug 13 14:56 PgDB/

It took me quite a while to figure this out myself. I haven't tried with
a directory, but it works with individual files. Put the file, it's owner
and group, and the permissions you want it to have in
 /etc/security/msec/perm.local, like so:

 # /etc/security/msec/perm.local
 # Local file permission settings to override msec.
 # [file][uid.gid] [perms]
 #
 /usr/bin/artswrapperroot.root 4755

(This example keeps msec from turning off suid on the artswrapper
so that my artsd can run with NRT scheduling priority)

Probably, the file is empty, at least it was on my system, so once
I figured out the format, I created the header to keep me from having
to go through all the headache again. Sadly, msec is not well documentd
unless you can read perl really well! :^)

[expert] pppd can't connect - pptpd subsequently dies

2002-08-14 Thread james

Hello, I've followed the PopTop how-to for 2.4 kernels to a 't', yet I
cannot establish a connection. Running Mandrake 8.2 with pppd 2.4.1 +
Poptop 1.1.2 behind a Cisco 806 router with ports 1723 and 47 forwarding
to the server.

Here is a log of an attempted connection from Windows 2000 from behind a
Linksys router with PPTP forwarding on (I manually forwarded the ports
too, just to be sure).

Aug 14 21:58:10 serve-on pptpd[21039]: CTRL: Client 24.141.11.74 control
connection started
Aug 14 21:58:10 serve-on pptpd[21039]: CTRL: Starting call (launching
pppd, opening GRE)
Aug 14 21:58:10 serve-on pppd[21040]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Aug 14 21:58:10 serve-on pppd[21040]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 14 21:58:10 serve-on pppd[21040]: Connect: ppp0 -- /dev/pts/3
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pppd[21040]: LCP: timeout sending
Config-Requests
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pppd[21040]: Connection terminated.
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pppd[21040]: Exit.
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pptpd[21039]: Error reading from pppd:
Input/output error
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pptpd[21039]: CTRL: GRE read or PTY write
failed (gre,pty)=(6,5)
Aug 14 21:58:40 serve-on pptpd[21039]: CTRL: Client 24.141.11.74 control
connection finished

So it seems that pptpd dies because pppd never connects and times out.
Here is my /etc/ppp/options file:

debug
lock
noauth
usepeerdns
#-chap
#-chapms
#+chapms-v2
#mppe-128
#mppe-stateless

I've had to comment out all the options above because pppd says it
doesn't recognized them .. even though I patched the kernel, compiled
the modules and inserted them as per the instructions.

Any help would be fantastic!
