Re: [expert] Survey (was Thanks Civileme)
You seem to be assuming that the only way to contribute to a distribution is to pay money to its makers. Mandrake has many volunteers who contribute their time and efforts instead of money. I am one such person. Often these contributions can far outweigh the cost of a boxed set or Club subscription. Paying money to a distribution company/organisation is a relatively new phenomenon. Traditionally in the free software/open source community, if you like something and want to give something back in return, you use your own blood, sweat and tears. IMHO, it is these people who are keeping the true spirit of the community alive. Finding out the attitudes and actions of NZ Linux users 2. Potentially be useful to Linux distributions who do require revenue / income from users 3. Raise consciousness and debate over the need for financial contributions 4. Identify how many users give something back, and not just take 5. [expert] console cd roms contents problems
Dear friends, I am testing Beta 9.2 and I have a problem that I had also in the beta 1; I can see the contents of the cdroms (I have two cdrom drivers) using konqueror or similar graphics applications (krusader, nautilus,..) but if I try to do that from a console, even with the konqueror showing the cd contents, I have the next message when using the command ls: ls: .: Stale NFS file handle I can move throughout the cdrom directories if I know the names of them, but never ls shows me the contents. Could be a bug or what? I must say that ls runs fine for harddisk contents. Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[expert] 2 TV questions
Background ATI TV wonder VE card =64(?) tuner type= 17 attached to cable TV Soundblaster Live sound card Program being used xawtv 3.58(?) First one is off topic, but maybe someone here knows. Is there a maximum length cable run before the TV signal gets degraded? The run from the junction inside the house to my Linux box is 125 ft (I do have a lot of slack so I could shorten this by 50 ft or more). I also have cables running to 2 televisions. Do these runs get included in the maximum allowable lenght? My picture is pretty good, but not great. In full screen it looks a bit grainy. In am running 1200x1000 (appx) in 16bit (I cant remember exactly since I am not at my linux box now) 2. Sound. Sound works, but it doesnt seem to be controlled by xawtv. I use the kmix to control the volume. The mute control in xawtv and the volume controls do nothing to sound levels. The problem is that when I quit the xawtv, the sound keeps playing! The only things I load in modules.conf is the card and the tuner. I dont have anything for tvmixer or tvaudio Thanks!! Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Card is inserted, 2. ifconfig eth0 down is run, 3. wvlan_cs module is unloaded 4. orinoco (or wavelan_cs) modules are loaded... but then ifconfig eth0 up doesn't work. Help is appreciated. [expert] Hey Civileme
Hey Civ, Just so you don't feel too bad about having to be job hunting again, I thought I might share this little tidbit of info with you. You are, no doubt, aware of Max Vision, and his recent travails. Well out check the following. The man is back (we hope)! Others on this list my also know of Mr. Vision, and if not, you might want to aquaint yourselves with one the founders in the NIDS area. --posted to the snort list by Shawn Moyer-- Someone in the Bay Area PLEASE hire Max! FYI, he got hosed, not that it matters to most people. I know this is a cross-post, but I think Max is well known to most of the readers of these lists, so I feel it's relevant. Please read below! Greetings security employers: I have an unusual situation that I would like to describe to you, and in doing so I am asking that anyone who can immediately employ me in the San Fransisco Bay Area, please read this email and consider taking advantage of my availablity and temporarily low cost. I am... o a seasoned professional with extensive security skills and experience o a once convicted hacker (DOD, 1998) o local to the San Fransisco Bay Area, I live in Oakland o willing to work for mimimum wage (for the next two months) o eager to work 60 hour weeks; I don't mind nights/weekends/holidays My Skills I am considered by many to have expert level proficiency at both penetration testing and network intrusion detection. I am also skilled at vulnerability research, firewall configuration, unix system administation (solaris, linux, *bsd), web administration/development, security policy development, and I even do windows. My Conviction (why I am desperate) I am not proud of being convicted of a felony, but it is important that a potential employer know of my status. Apparently if you have FDIC insurance there is a clause stating that you cannot hire a convicted hacker on your projects. It is also because of my status that I am desperate for security-related or even internet-related work. The truth is, I am living in a federal halfway house transitioning out of prison back into society. I have to find local work to meet their requirements, and they haven't approved any telecommute offers I have had so far. The director of the facility told me that if I don't find a job in the next week or so he will send me back to prison (my sentence actually ends October 12th). Now, maybe he will be more compassionate and see that I have made extraordinary efforts to find a job, but either way I really need work right now. I have been showing up at places that farm out manual labor, 5:30am, and still haven't found any work. My situation is just ridiculous. My Location I deeply appreciate the offers I have had for telecommute work, but unfortunately I need local employment for at least the next several months. I live in Oakland, but I can commute to anywhere that BART reaches. My Price I am willing to work for minimum wage for the next few months. Surely there is some open position at a security company in the area - hire me as a janitor but give me a cubicle and I'll do vulnerability research or help with security audits or have me sling html or whatever is useful to you, who will know? The last half dozen employers I have had paid me at least $100/hr for my time, now I am only asking for $6.75. If it came down to it, I would be willing to sign an agreement whereby I will repay all wages after a certain amount of time (I do need money like anyone else, but that is secondary to having a job - my very freedom depends on getting a job in the area). Seriously, this is your chance to get someone who really knows what they are doing, cheap. If you can put me to work immediately, please do. Here is my /etc/ppp/options file: debug lock noauth usepeerdns #-chap #-chapms #+chapms-v2 #mppe-128 #mppe-stateless I've had to comment out all the options above because pppd says it doesn't recognized them .. even though I patched the kernel, compiled the modules and inserted them as per the instructions.
