That is an awesom application...

I just checed it out...

Only two things I can think of that it needs for use over here..

1. MySQL support..
2. Australian GST support..

I am going to have a read thought the code and see if I can't provide those
requirements..

In theory, if its using DBI to access DB, then it should be possible, unless
they are using stuff specific to Pg.

The GST is another whole ballgame, My Girlfriend is a Bookkeeper, so if she
can make me understand what is required for Aust GST.. then I will see if I
can do it..

I am really excited, sql-ledger is an application I have been thinking about
writing for ages.. didn't know someone already had.

I might have to have Mr. Weaver see if he can't get an installation of

Got and like a lot of Loki games, but haven't been able to play them

That's more or less how I do it too, without the fresh install. I
track cooker daily until release...then wait out the first 2 or 3
weeks after cooker re-opening and keep going on the daily tracking
until the glibc/gcc/whatever changes start, then I stop till I don't

Re: [expert] lock screen

2003-02-09 Thread Tom
Desktop enviroment is KDE 3

I believe that I upgraded via an "update packages" scheme since I did not load
in a clean install and I did not redo the partitions.

Currently, when I click on "lock screen", nothing happens.
---
UPDATE!!!
---
Disregard the thread, problem solved Turns out that the screen saver to be
used had been flushed as a result of the upgrade. Thus when I went to lock
the screen, an invalid screen saver was selected. I simply selected one the
the few screen savers left, and TADA! fixed!

Thanks for the replies. Sometimes one can't see the forest 'cause the trees
are in the way!

It was strange. I was copying an ISO from one partition to another (two
separate drives) and it hung. Tried it again later, and moved 3 ISOs in
succession without a burp. Very odd. I usually find cooker to be quite
stable, but I tend to go this cycle: install release version, wait until
after cooker has settled down (gcc/glibc upgrades), track cooker during the
beta period, do a fresh install when the release is out. I have to have a
semi-stable system, and don't sync with cooker daily... so I tend to take
this route. Upgrades are really simple even with a fresh install. Soon
I'll be setting up CVS so I can commit the entire /etc directory to CVS then
on an upgrade I can do stuff like "cvs co" or "cvs diff" to find the
differences. Should be an interesting project.

If I'm going to sit down and play EQ, i want it to work 100%... =) I've
tried WineX, and while it's ok, doesn't really play to well on my
workstation with it's odd dual-head setup (2MB PCI video card and a 16MB
AGP). It's caused strange issues for me in the past. So I've got one
machine that is a f/t cooker machine that dual-boots win2k. It's helpful
for the odd time i need to run win software (not often) or testing stuff
like samba.

I play WC3 and D2 on my mac, so I'm not worried about that... =) WineX is
alright, and it's been cool to play with, but when I play on my Linux
workstation, which isn't often, I usually play the older Loki games I've
got... except SimCity3000 doesn't want to run on cooker for some reason...

Everything is working fine now.

Carelessly, I disabled frame buffer support in make menuconfig. After
restoring it back and recompiling, I am back in business.

Thanks for your response.

What video card are you running? What kernel are you trying to boot? Is
dm running? What does startx say when it presumibly fails? What
runlevel is being selected on boot?

[expert] ML9.0:file system completely crashed ext3,"could not find mime type",kde3.0.3

2003-02-09 Thread vatbier
Mandrake Linux 9.0 here:
I installed alsa-utils from CD1 with MCC:Software Install:
in /var/log/syslog these error messages appeared (SEE BELOW):

"XT3-fs error (device ide0(3,2)): ext3_new_block: Allocating block in
system zone - block = 294914"

Then I rebooted (because I wanted to boot in runlevel 3 to see
whether I could play sound..., not relevant here).
Error bootmessages appeared (SEE BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS):

"fsck: /dev/hda2 contains a file system with errors, check forced"...
fsck: /dev/hda2: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
failed to check filesytem. Do you want to repair the errors? Y/N
(beware, you can lose data)

I pressed Yes:
a lot of inodes were fixed or cleared
ABOUT 22345 MESSAGES APPEARED (SEE BELOW)
"/dev/hda2: file system was modified "

I was in runlevel 3: tried a few commands but those weren't recognized.

Booted into KDE:
about 25 windows appeared that said:
"could not find mime type application/octet stream"
or "could not find mime type application/x-executable"
or "could not find mime type application/x-desktop"
or "could not find mime type application/x-shellscript"
Each window has to be pressed twice to get rid of.
There are some Konqueror windows open from the former session,
I can use them to browse the internet or my file system.
I can not start programs from the menu, in my file system a lot of
files have now file type mime.
FINALLY I FOUND OUT THAT A LOT OF FILES WERE GONE, FROM
DIFFERENT DIRECTORIES.
I also have a Konsole window open: except for basic commands no command
is recognized.
I searched Google, found nothing useful, search function of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list didn't work.
Is there an easy way to repair my system or do I have to reinstall
everything??
I have a backup from 3 weeks ago, but that won't bring back the lost
files from /bin, /user/sbin,etc.
UPDATE: I searched Google for "ext3_new_block: Allocating block in
system zone": I found the ext3-user mailing-list and read and learned a bit
about file system corruption.
I tested my memory with memtest86 but no errors were detected, I read
that this is not conclusive.
I probably will reinstall Mandrake Linux 9.0.
But how can I figure out what has caused the corruption:
Memory, hard disk, IDE cable, IDE controller, UDMA, CPU, cooling,...?
And how can I best recover from this: reinstall complete distribution and
then apply backups? How can I figure out which files have been modified or
disappeared?

I also remember that in the same session KNode newsreader crashed when I
tried to read a newsmessage after downloading the headers of
alt.os.linux.mandrake. It crashed several times.

My system:
AMD AthlonXP 1600+
Motherboard MSI K7T266 Pro2 (MS-6380 V2.0): VIA KT266A, VIA VT8233
512 MB memory (tested it with memtest86: no errrors detected)
Western Digital Caviar 40GB 7200RPM: UDMA is enabled I think (see below for
info from dmesg)
Mandrake Linux 9.0 (kernel 2.4.19-16mdk)
On this disk I also run: WinXP,Win98,Mandrake8.2(ext2) : no problem with
these OSes so far.

Very frustrated after this happened, I thought linux file systems were
stable. UPDATE: No longer very frustrated, just a little; this is the first
time in six years I experience such a problem.

[expert] Limitting number of times a program opens

Hallo!

We've got 1 PC working as X server and 6 X clients. All of them are using the
same user/pwd.

We'd like to limit the maximum times a program is run, in order to save
resources and prevent "bad boys". Can this be done?

If the solution was to use a different user/pwd in every client how could this
be done?

TIA

Oh, I have all buttons and switches disconnected, he managed to lock it

I'm thinking it's time to give up on nvidia crap and go back to the nv

I'd never thought that sasl will be installed but not the libsasl-plugin

How can MandrakeSoft forget this dependency?

Because it's not mandatory.
I count 9 sasl plugins in my package for sasl v2, you just install the
ones you need. If you need sasl to authenticate with one time passwords,
you'll install the otp plugin, otherwise you won't. The same could be
said for all other plugins. In fact *none* of them is required (you
could use the sasl libraries in a server and authenticate plain text
password through saslauthd, which in turn could authenticate with pam,
ldap or a couple other means).

You know, you could set your BIOS so that a poweroff takes 4 seconds on the

Hi Steffen,

just came accross a forum-Entry that states the Problems you describe
have disappeared after the Dude upgraded his Graphic-Card BIOS.

You might try it out. Could fix your problem.
