[expert] Where are libacl.so.1 and libattr.so.1?

2003-03-21 Thread Arnold Troeger
I've just tried running urpmi on samba-common (latest security update) and have
encountered a problem. The installation fails with a statement that
samba-common and samba-client require libacl.so.1 and libattr.so.1. I've tried
running urpmi on libacl and it comes back with "Installation failed:
libacl1==2.0.0 is needed by libacl1-devel-2.0.0-1mdk" When I run urpmf on
libacl it comes back with libacl1-devel:... but no libacl package. Is there a
libacl1 package to go with the libacl1-devel package? "urpmi" and "urpmf"
aren't convinced evidently.

I'm running Mandrake 8.2 on an IBM 600e thinkpad. All the other updates have
been applied.

Thanks in advance,
Arnold

[expert] samba, sharing, nautilus, me, frustration

2003-03-21 Thread Azrael
I click on a folder in nautilus, and tell it to share.
smb is running.
I try and see the share from the Mac, and can't get a thing.

This is frustrating, I don't /really/ expect things to be this easy..
but.. I must confess.. I did wish it would be. Because it looks as if it
should be.

There's probably something quite simple I missed. Or maybe there's a
common problem here? Either way, I am happy to wait for 9.1 final, but
could someone tell me what to do when using 9.1 in order to share
folders easily?

many thanks

I recall seeing some discussion on Cooker that if you have less than 64MB of
memory, the installer cannot create a ramdisk, and therefore cannot unmount
the cdrom. This allows you to only use the first disk.

This should not affect the addition of the sources later though. I don't know
what is causing that problem.

[expert] New linux kernel for mdk9

2003-03-21 Thread J. Grant
Hi,

I have been searching for a newer kernel on:

ftp://ftp.dkuug.dk/pub/mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS
rpmfind.net
However, I can not find a 2.4.20 rpm. Are there rpms for mdk anywhere
on the net?

I found the cooker ISO's:

ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake-iso/i586

However I just wanted a newer kernel rpm. With that local root, and some
RAID updates etc

Could someone direct me to an rpm for mdk9 please?

Cheers

I know of www.kernel.org but I do not know wheter .rpm

.tgz are quite straighforward to install:
tar xzvf
whenever you need to uninstall it just remove the

RE: [expert] Where are libacl.so.1 and libattr.so.1?

2003-03-21 Thread gikoreno

Hey,

The way I did it is that I made a copy of my samba config files, then I did an urpme
and took samba out. Then I went to the main ftp site, and manually got samba, and
libacl1, and libattr1. Installed them again, checked that the config files were
intact, and started up the server.

Maybe if you do as root an "urpmi.update -a" followed by an "urpmi libacl1 libattr1"
it will install them, and you probably don't need to uninstall samba and you can
upgrade directly... I just wasn't sure where the problem was so I decided to start
clean on the matter (worked for me though). The urpmi solution may be more elegant
though.
Hope this helps,

gikoreno

Under mandrake-devel/cooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS (thereabouts) on your
mirror, there will be an rpm of the latest cooker kernel. You can view
the changelog with rpm -qp --changelog (kernel.rpm url). There might be
dependencies on some other cooker packages.

[expert] Problems after uipgrading via cooker

2003-03-21 Thread Stephen Kitchener
Hi,

I know that I should expect problems in using cooker, but I wanted to
look a quanta without it crashing, so I added a cooker url and did a
urpmi quanta, it suggested that it wanted to update various packages, in
them were some kde packakages and xfree packages.

After the 'upgrade', all the apps that I started where very wide, and I
mean VERY wide, even the menu entries from the K were wider than the
screen. the login screen is also unusable for the same reason.

I wonder if anyone has seen this before and knows how to get out of it
?, I did think of trying to do a complete update to cooker, but that was
1500MB, and over a DSL link thats going to take some time...

The base installation is 9.0 btw.

netstat -atun | grep 13

Look for the IP address that the Mac will be looking for, port 137. If
Samba is really listening on the right interface, the next step is to
check shorewall. If you've only got one interface, you're probably safe
running the firewall tool from DrakConf (drakfirewall). If you've got
multiple interfaces (including modems, VMWare, VPNs, &c) then you'd
better read shorewall's documentation. Short answer is to edit
/etc/shorewall/rules and open up 137,139 UDP and TCP bidirectional.

rpmfind.net has difficulty indexing Mandrake's RPMs -- try searching for
"kernel-2.4" instead of "kernel".

You can´t install cooker apps on 9.0 and expect it to work. You need the whole
cooker system.

Yes, Xfree was updated, but the only strange thing is that the hight is
ok, ie it hasn't changed at all.

I can run XFdrake from the command line and everything looks ok.

I get the same wide display on windows exported to another x-server.

you need libacl1-1.1.2-2mdk.i586.rpm and

libattr1-2.0.1-1.1mdk.i586.rpm for 8.2 I found them on www.pbone.net.

JG,

The 9.1 kernel may or may not run as is on your box... The odds are
better than 50 50 HOWEVER I've heard of a number of people who have
built the 9.1 kernel on 9.0 without a problem. I would recommend doing
just this.. get the source build the kernel.

In theory disks are do out ASAP for 9.1 final if you don't have them and
can wait through till Sunday it might be worth it. Note that rc2 is a
bit buggy... Not unusable.. just flaky.. over DSL after installing rc2
the final update will take about 45 minutes to an hour. (based on what I
did for a friend yesterday.) Note... once you do the upgrade grab the
cooker kernel and sit back and smile because you will have 9.1 complete.

PS. (be sure and merge all rc files by searching for rpmnew files and
moving them/merging them correctly.)

Both links were interesting, thanks, but showed nothing that helped in
the NIC problem. Nothing showed up for MDK 9.0. Too new a version?

This was productive. Found RPMs for each kernel version of 8-9.0.
Installation went well.

I contacted technical support at SMC a little while ago. What I
suspected after my compiling problem was that the scripts were written
for Red Hat systems. It turns out to be true, and the only system they
have tested on. Their stance is that this PC Card is Linux compatible,
though not necessarily Mandrake compatible. They suggested that I look
to the Web to see if anyone has source code or RPMs for Mandrake on this
Card. Well, I have already search high and wide, but found nothing
reflecting Mandrake for this card. I will continue to look, of course.

I did try, just for the fun of it, to play around with my
/etc/pcmcia/config to see if I could manipulate the O/S to load some
module that would work. 'tulip' didn't work, using your manfid setting
and the ones that showed up on boot-up. I tried 'pcnet_cs' with the
manfid settings I am seeing and it still wouldn't load. One thing that
tech support did answer me on was what the chipset used on this card
would either be Realtek or National Semiconductor, but he wouldn't be
able to tell me which.

Beyond this, I am on my own.

Thanks again for your help. If you come up with any ideas, please post
them here or write to me directly.

Greg,
Does the #Macros section in your .rpmrc file substitute for the .rpmmacros
file mentioned in the Mandrake rpm how-to? CyberCFO sent me your file when
I was trying to rebuild XFree86 for athlon-xp, but I could never get it to
work with it, or any other srpm as user, and always had to use --target
athlon, and the regular rpmrc file to rebuild srpms as root, which I know
isn't the preferred method. I have all the correct directories in /home as
required, but I must be missing something.

What version of Apache are you using? What did you do for the keys? Did
you compile with support to openssl? Are you starting Apache with the
SSL option?

2003-03-21 Thread David E. Fox

So that's it. I'm not affected by lack of RAM, but it's good to see a
coherent explanation.

On the same issue - how much RAM does the installation program really
need these days? As a fairly longterm user of Linux, I've seen and
done installs in as low as 4 megs of RAM up to my current system
configuration, which has 256 megs. As memory resources have increased
*quite a bit* in the last several years, it also seems that the
installers are getting fancier and requiring more RAM as well.

One trick we used (back in the days of SLS and early Slackware) was to
define and manually attach a swap partition as soon as was possible
during the install process. That way, one could still install on
a system that didn't quite have the recommended memory requirements.

This doesn't seem applicable these days - at least in that the current
installer has to wait until the partition definition screen (i.e.,
diskdrake) to set these partitions up for us. And, consequently, if
there's not enough RAM to get yuo this far, you're in trouble to say
the least.

> I dunno about this, but I would try using urpmi.addmedia instead.

Yeah, that works, but you have to install things after the stuff is
isntalled on CD#1.

On the other hand, I don't have a burner and all I physically had when
I installed 9.0 was the first CD. It would have been nice to be able
to do on-the-fly urpmi.addmedia's to install stuff from the rest of
the system via other means (could be FTP or HD). And in my instance
the HD install method blew up early in the install because it could
not find a hdlist.cz file :(.

Right now I have CD's 2 and 3 ISO's loopmounted and use those for
sources for urpmi. Works nicely.

Hmm. That's kind of hard :(. I thought Miark summed it up best - the
installer can't ask for other CD's if the installer has to be on the
CD and not on a RAM disk. I'm not certain on memory requirements for
the installer.

As I commented (to Miarks post) on the list it makes for difficulties
if the "other" cd's (2 &3) aren't as easily accessible as is the first
one. Ideally, you'd want them all available at once. One can do an
urpmi.addmedia after the fact (as I do, since physically I only have a
#1 CD and don't have a burner) but it has to be done after the initial
install, as far as I know.

My previous installs have been HD installs - I just pointed the
install to a place on my HD where I had all the packages downloaded
to. For 9.0 it's a bit more complex because 1) the HD install broke my
box, and 2) I have ISOs for the two other CD's and not the RPMs
themselves. So I elected to loopback mount the other 2 CD images some-
place, and after urpmi.addmedia, I can then just add packages in as
desired.

Are you installing 9.0 fresh for the first time on a (new) PC,
or do you have a Linuxb setup already working?

yeah, now that I think about it I had to drill down through the cooker
tree to get it:
http://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/cooker/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/KByName.html

Grab these and rpm -Uvh, then check /etc/lilo and run /sbin/lilo, then
you're good to go.
kernel-doc-2.4.21-0.13mdk
kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk
kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk

This kernel brings swsusp to Beta 17 or so IIRC -- so my VAIO finally
can suspend and resume. Of course it kills X and takes more time than
actually shutting down and rebooting, but I'm definitely sensing
progress :-) The swsusp list is very active on Beta 19, and I'm keeping
my fingers crossed that Juan's going to release one more kernel with a
newer swsusp before 9.1.

You might have done rpm -i instead of -U? Normally kernel packages do
not replace each other. I have had some ugly problems with the MDK
kernel postun scripts, but the -13 kernel didn't do anything to make me

Depends on the distribution. Debian and Slackware will still install in
a very small system, and I suppose that Gentoo or Lunar would too if you
defined a gig or two of swap and left it to itself for a few weeks :-)

Sure, having the sources installed isn't necessary unless you want to
compile your own kernel or want to peek :). But some packages may want
the kernel headers installed to compile. Luckily, the kernel headers
can be installed separately from the rest of the kernel source (kernel
headers go under /usr/include/linux by way of a symlink usually).

Let's see... I could have been really quick and put them out the day I built
them without any testing... would that have been fast enough for you?

See, this is what makes me laugh, and I don't mean to pick on you, Bryan.
When we announced the product EOL policy, people were in an uproar because
they felt they deserved longer support periods. Now we're apparently not
releasing fast enough (the "it's been days now" comment).

Make up your minds, folks. =) Either you want us to support stuff for a
long time, or you want updates quickly. You can't have both.

Remember, for glibc and the kernel, we're building for the following
platforms:

7.2
SNF7.2
8.0
8.0/PPC
8.1
8.1/IA64
8.2
8.2/PPC
MNF8.2
9.0
Corporate Server 2.1
9.1
9.1/PPC

If you want things tested, it takes time. Heck, building glibc and the
kernels for all of these platforms is a 2 day job just *compiling* this
stuff.

Of course, next week five of those will be gone, which will make the
response time much quicker. The whole purpose of the EOL policy.

In other words, by "robbing" you of "free" support for old (obsolete)
versions, we're actually providing you better service.

Don't you just love how that works out?

Anyways, more to the point... next week at some point you will have both
kernel and glibc updates.

And as an aside, questions like this make me chuckle. I know you're eager,
but you must realize no one is sleeping at the wheel here. Questions like
this are more often than not likely to go unanswered... we are busy building
and testing these updates and answering this stuff more verbosely than
"soon" is time consuming.

Be patient and rest assured that they will be available as quickly as
realistically possible; they take a little longer because we'd like to be
sure they're ok before you all install a bum kernel (now how much fun would
that be?)

This is less true when crossing the 9.0 to 9.1 divide though -- you'll
note there is no kernel-headers package on the "k" page I posted
earlier, and the 9.0 kernel headers aren't sufficient (you can leave
them installed, but nothing that uses the kernel will compile properly
until you've installed kernel-source).

[expert] Logitech USB Wheel Mouse

2003-03-21 Thread Rob Blomquist
I was able to solve my PS2 mouse/CD burning problem by shifting the
mouse to USB.

But here's the catch. I was unable to use mousedrake to configure it.
It kept complaining that "no usb bus found\n at /usr/sbin/mousedrake
line 54." Bull, I type this with a USB mouse configured with
modprobing input.o, mousedev.o and rebooting my system, which found
it during hardware detection (hey I thought I didn't ever have to
reboot!)

Now, I am trying to get this to be a proper wheel mouse which it was
as a PS2 mouse, but as a USB mouse I can't get the wheel detected.

I edited /etc/X11/XF86Config in the Pointer section:
from:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection
to:
Section "Pointer"
Identifier "USB Mice" #added 03/21/03
Protocol "IMPS/2"
# Device "/dev/psaux" #commented out 03/21/03
Device "dev/input/mice" #added 03/21/03
ZAxisMapping "4 5" #quotes added 3/21/03
Buttons "5" #added 03/21/03
EndSection

With this, I still don't get a wheel mouse. I have the wheel button
functioning, but not the wheel motion.

This XF86Config file differs from the ones I have previously seen.
where are the quotes around the names of the fields? What about the
quotes around "4 5" has Mandrake changed things? Or am I behind the
times. what should my pointer section say to get this mouse to work
right?

Hmm. I don't have a tv card and I've never used avifile but you might
have better success with mencoder (part of mplayer), see
http://mplayerhq.hu.

Examples seem to suggest it's possible to use mencoder to grab the
input from a TV (card) and encode the audio into AVI or other
supported formats. Couple that with a crontab setup and you've got
a tivo :).

It also seems you have a very high level of control on the encoding
side, but it's also difficult to figure out how to do it :).

There are some examples here:
http://mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/documentation.html#tv_examples/

Whether mpleyer is more or less difficult to compile than avifile
given your current setup is left as an exercise (grin). And there
should be RPMs of both, try plf (plf.zarb.org).

One of these days I should get a tv card. It seems there would be
interesting possibilities.
