I expect it to mount as root, and actually prefer it that way. It is the other two that won't allow me to read or write anything to them. But will experiment some more. Getting this organised and learning how it works will just keep me a little longer from an all Linux native box. Though I can format them as FAT32 it isn't really what I want.Like everything a little more time and perseverance. I will also do as James suggested and experiment with setuid. [expert] configure touchpad on Aopen1845A laptop
First time I ever used a laptop. I put MDK9.1 on and every thing works well. Just when I did the install I had an external ps2 mouse attached, if that makes a difference. If I unplug the mouse and boot up there is activity from the touchpad but completely uncontrollable. Where does one configure this, or what should I be reading up on. I am using KDE, but would probably change to ice when I get it working. Any help / pointers appreciated. Best regards Steve Cox Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? There errors you are getting when you do the normal insmod are normal for this driver (and not the cause of your problems). There is an object file included as part of the driver that was compiled with GCC 2, and even though the error message says it's known not to work, it does (I use a pctel modem with that driver, but not one integrated on the MB). Are you sure the modem is the PCT 789? If the chip is visible on the MB, you can look and see otherwise, you might try some of the other options in the driver. If you are sure that it is the 789, you might try booting with ACPI disabled or set to off. Some people have reported success with that. Joeb Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? OK ... how about copying everything (as root) from /usr into /holding: cp -av /usr/* /holding/ Make sure it looks like everything copied OK. Then you should be able to boot into console mode as root, rename /usr to something else, and mount /dev/hde10 as /usr. Then try to run something that is in /usr and if OK, change /etc/fstab to mount /dev/hde10 as /usr, and you can delete everything in the directory that WAS /usr in hde7. I would do this instead by booting into Knoppix ... I find more and more uses for it every day. From Knoppix it would be less tricky because you would not be running the risk of using something in /usr, but the former method SHOULD work because /usr is supposed to be mountable read only anyway. Re: [expert] I Hate RPM's!!
Thanks Vincent for all the education. I knew that was the best way to get the info out of someone This was all done on a a test system.so nothing is really lost so far. It makes perfect sense from your explanation that the RPM's I was trying to install are for RH. In the future, how does one make rpm's for mandrake then? Say, I want "openssl version" to show me 0.9.7b so that i dont get flagged by some scanners looking at responses version command? I was trying to update openssl to stop myself from getting "flagged" for having a vulnerable system based on a version # only. [eg. sendmail 8.12.6 is patched on Mandrake, BUT, i had to upgrade for 8.12.9 for the same reason!, since scanners would flag 8.12.6 as vulnerable]. Also, after changing the links in /usr/lib to point to newer /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7, then ran ldconfig, it did reset them to original config! (ie. pointing back to 0.9.6). Can you educate me on that too? Readin "man ldconfig" has not shaded a light yet! Good thing i have not touched any actual hosts being used. Richard, Do you know something about urpmi? Is a Mandrake feature, you can add several internet servers as rpm sources (urpmi.addmedia) and install lots of packages (in rpm format) just writing "urpmi ". I have added the textar, plf and contribs sources, and I have forgotten the rpm dependences problems. This is already bad news. You've pretty much borked your system yourself by doing this. OpenSSL 0.9.6 and OpenSSL 0.9.7 are *not* compatible. Ahh... I see you have 0.9.6i and not 0.9.6x... so you are running either 9.0 or 8.2. The version is also the latest update that is out. So either there is a new vulnerability for openssl that we are not aware of, or you hosed your system for nothing (ie. that version of openssl is patched). Taking a quick trip to www.openssl.org... Ok, I see that 0.9.6j is out, but the openssl page says nothing about security fixes, just bugfixes. Unfortunately, the changelog on the site is kinda messed, so I'm downloading 0.9.6j to read the changelog. Aaargh... I should have saved myself the effort. 0.9.6j was released April 10th to fix those things we patched in March, using patches the openssl team provided. In other words, you borked your system for absolutely nothing. > OK, Good. But libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.4mdk was not > overwritten! Good grief man, you're trying to install a Red Hat rpm here too! What would possibly possess you to do that? > Why are things this complicated Because a) you made a silly assumption without verifying it, b) you're mixing and matching stuff from all over the place (ie. RH rpms), c) you're trying to use a version of openssl that nothing is built against (you'd have to rebuild a lot more than just openssh IIRC). If you would have bothered to find out just what you thought you were vulnerable to, asked here or on the discuss@ list prior to jumping on your journey of system-self-destruction, you would have been told (probably rather quickly) that the version of openssl you had originally installed was perfectly fine and *not* vulnerable. Resources such as MandrakeSecure (the website, discussion mailing lists, etc.) exist so people don't have to do things like this or, if they feel they need to, can at least be informed prior to doing it. Look at the last 3 lines. It can't start smbd because it is under the impression that something else is using that port. So it can't bind to it. As root do lsof -i :139 and see what it says This is the program/daemon that is blocking this port for you. If it isn't smb kill it if you can and try it again. I'm willing to bet (but not a large bet.) that smbd at some point has/had crashed and left behind it's socket marker. So an attempt to restart can't do it because as far as it's concerned... it's still running The other point I'm not so sure of is why the address is 0.0.0.0 This could be normal and I believe it is, but I'm not sure on this. But you are yelling at the messenger not the sender. The problem isn't rpm but rather openssh. When openssh people fix a "bug" they don't have to worry about dependency on anything but openssh. MDK, or for that matter RH SuSE etc etc etc, have to worry about all of the applications built against the previous version as well. So what Vincent does (or the package maintainer.) is to look at the changes from the version with the bug to the version with the fix. Weed out all of the "new features" that have nothing to do with the bug and that will/might break other application built against this libpackage (both in building new apps, and in running installed apps.) then package it and release it as a new build. Not necessarily with the new version name and number, because it might not be the complete new version but it is new in that it contains the needed security/bug fix so that your computer is less vulnerable to the black hats of the world. Sometimes this will hold true even from one point release to the other. Because some libs. (take for an extreme example glibc) are so pervasive that they require massive application rebuilds and spec file re-thinks. This isn't pretty. (Which IMHO is why .0 release are often the buggiest of the lot.) The solution is ... use the update rpms. They are the ones that contain the security fixes. Read the MDK errata for your release. http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3 Read the security notices for your release. http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/ And check there to be sure that you really do need the update you are trying to do. It may actually already be on your box or in the version in updates. Last thing you could do is to ask here if a == b? If you find something that Vincent or the maintainer of the package has possibly missed. I know they are willing to listen and take action. This has been proven over and over again. (case in point, build 24mdk of the kernel had barely made it to the mirrors when on of the users here found a serious security hole, Within 24 hours a new kernel release fixing the holes had been completed, checked and mirrored. That's moving.) When you get down to lib level often you will be faced with a choice. Trust the security updates. Turn your into MDK-From-Scratch (as opposed to Linux-from-Scratch) or ask Vincent et al. BTW the build version in 9.1 and the update in < 9.0 contains the security fix and does do privilege separation. Which I'm guessing is why you wanted 3.6 Also... 3.6 for Linux is still pretty alpha-ish. (according to some of the openbsd guys I know.) However alpha for those guys is release for M$. I would be happy to point you in the right direction when you want to pursue it. Re: [expert] I Hate RPM's!!
RPM is not your problem here. The warning messages you are getting are from OpenSSL. The OpenSSL API changes between version. It is trying to verify that the version you linked against is the version you are actually calling. (There are some very good reasons to do this.) Upgrading OpenSSL by hand is not for the timid. And now a real reason to hate RPM. (This is fixable BTW.) If you use "--whatrequires" to find all the things that OpenSSL is supposed to link against, you will get a small handful of the actual dependancies. If you use "-e", you will get a complete list. (If the library is not listed in the spec file, the autodependancy will pick it up, but only the library name, not the correct package.) And then there is the bug in "obsoletes"... It is caused by the fact that pygtk < 0.6.11 and pygtk2 are not parallel installable. With PyGTK-2 and PyGTK-0.x installed and using the same version of Python, the applications that required PyGTK-0.x would stop working. This happened because Python would import PyGTK-2 preferentially, and the names of the modules are the same: 'gtk'. This issue has been resolved in pygtk=0.6.11 which is currently in cooker and will be avaiable in 9.2. You could dl and rebuild the src rpm from cooker but that will also entail rebuilding all currently installed pkgs which require gtk. My understanding was that it was not necessary (1) but my understanding might be incomplete, so I would appreciate some clarification here. I don't use grub, so I can't honestly say. If someone knows definitively, please let me know. Grub need not be re-installed when a new kernel is being added to the system. All you may need to do is modify menu.lst and even that seems to be unnecessary with Mandrake since the vmlinuz and initrd point to the latest kernel and initrd via soft links. Look up a program called Rpmgraph on freshmeat.net or google and you will begin to understand what I mean. An rpm system takes into account that the entire distro is a system that is balanced on itself. Some items are more critical to that balance than others; glibc is a good example since nearly everything that's not statically compiled depends on glibc. A glibc foobar will hose the whole system. You can't really understand the importance of a dependency based distro until you either study the intricacies and implications of an rpmgraph in detail or else you run a non-dependency based distro for a few years and deal with the breakage there. I promise you that no matter how bad you think your troubles are now, they are as nothing compared to when a major break occurs in a non-dependency based distro. Like Slackware, for instance. Slackware, like any other elf type distro, is a system that's balanced on itself. That balance can easily be thrown out of whack with the installation of a tar.gz that unilaterally installs itself without regard to the consequences. The main difference between dependency and non-dependency is that the rpm's weigh the consequences of what they are about to do, and in so doing force you to do the same. What they cannot do is give you the experience of running a non-dependency distro. --LX -- °°° Linux Mandrake 9.1 Kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk "Filter That, Beach!" --Lanman, MDK Newbie List Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? New hard drive, definitely. /dev/hde appears to be a 40G drive; you should be able to replace it with an 80, at least. You could probably then put the old stuff on the 40G if you want, or maybe use it for backups of important stuff from the new drive. I recently replaced two 40G drives with two 160G drives. I tried to keep the old 40G too, just so I could say I had over a third of a terabyte of storage, but the system seemed to be a bit unstable with three hard drives. Probably the power supply is a little weak. Anyway, I would suggest expanding rather than juggling. Whatever you do to try to get back down under 90% (which should be considered a full drive IMHO) would soon be creeping up into the 90% range. -- Jan Wilson, SysAdmin _/*]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Corozal Junior College | |:' corozal.com corozal.bz Corozal Town, Belize | /' chetumal.com & linux.bz Reg. [expert] What's the deal with this?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 There is an app available called "Pyblink" that makes it possible to use pybliographic with OpenOffice. It is a bit of a hack but if you use references in your writing, it is possible to get past the loser reference manager in OO/SO and use pybliographic instead. Pybliographic is intended to work with Lyx. Anyway, unfortunately, it is not an easy thing to simply install and run Pyblink (http://www.sonnet.dk/pyblink/). It requires: Python2, pygtk2, and pypygtk2-libglade. I have each except pygtk2-libglade installed. I did "urpmi pygtk2-libglade" and get this: The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: dia-0.90-5mdk (due to missing pygtk) draksync-9.0-2mdk (due to missing pygtk) pybliographer-1.0.11-7mdk (due to unsatisfied pygnome >= 1.4.0) pygnome-1.4.4-1mdk (due to unsatisfied pygtk == 0.6.9) pygnome-capplet-1.4.4-1mdk (due to unsatisfied pygnome == 1.4.4) pygtk-0.6.9-6mdk (due to conflicts with pygtk[< 0.6.11]) do you agree ? (Y/n) Absolutely NOT! There will be no removals here, just UPGRADES. I don't get it. For one thing, pybliographer works perfectly yet urpmi wants to remove it simply because I want to install pygtk2-libglade?! NO! Pybliographer is one of the most important apps on the system. In any case, why does urpmi give a damn about the others (which don't have any problems with pygtk2-libglade, per se, but with other files which are installed. For instance: pybliographer-1.0.11-7mdk (due to unsatisfied pygnome >= 1.4.0) pygnome-1.4.4-1mdk (due to unsatisfied pygtk == 0.6.9) pygnome-capplet-1.4.4-1mdk (due to unsatisfied pygnome == 1.4.4) See what this is saying? pygnome-1.4.4 IS installed but urpmi wants to remove pybliographer because its pygnome-1.4.4 dependency isn't met? Same for the rest in that list. Is this indicating that urpmi is broken and that I will be forced to use rpm to force pygtk2-libglade onto my system that way? At least rpm wont idiotically remove (rather than upgrade) other apps to do it. What I mean is that on the webpage for the kernel advisory, http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/advisory.php?name=MDKSA-2003:066-2 there is a plain text url for the critical kernel upgrade instructions, http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/magic.php Since there are other clickable links on that page, couldn't this one be made as easy to follow? This is somewhat less of an issue if the conflicting manual upgrade statement is removed but it might be an easy improvement to accomplish. Regarding the instructions for the kernel upgrade, they include: 'Once you have modified your lilo.conf or menu.lst file, execute "lilo -v" or "sh /boot/grub/install.sh", again depending upon your bootloader.' I have never re-installed grub (over 3 years) after only modifying menu.lst and there have been others who have expressed a reservation about this instruction. My understanding was that it was not necessary (1) but my understanding might be incomplete, so I would appreciate some clarification here. I don't use grub, so I can't honestly say. If someone knows definitively, please let me know. Well, I have not been able to find it in the grub docs but here is a statement from Red Hat's file: "# grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file" http://www.redhat.com/archives/redhat-install-list/2002-January/msg00931.html What I can do on the website is remove the "to upgrade manually" part arbitrarily.. As far as I'm concerned, everyone should be using urpmi or rpmdrake, so we'll just ignore that part. I'll also do the same with the advisory template. I'm too lazy to make the system distinguish between what should be done manually and what shouldn't be; chances are, one time I'll forget and the jackals will leap for my throat. Pyblink is written to work with Redhat (it seems) so it is setup for Redhat quirks and wont work properly with Mandrake. If there are any python wizards in the list, perhaps they could alter pyblink to work with Mandrake? The problem is that it looks for several modules and fails to find them, presumably, because of the way Redhat handles python. Pyblink tries to import gtk.glade and several other modules but fails to find them (presumably merely a problem with naming). I would like to any python wizards here to take a look at pyblink and determine what tweaks are required to get it working in Mandrake. Pyblink can act as a stopgap measure to allow for pybliographic to provide OpenOffice a function somewhat akin to Word with EndNote, allowing for the simple addition of citations to OO docs via pybliographic. Right now, the only way to do this in linux is to use Lyx (which is what pybliographic is designed to work with). What would REALLY be great is to see a pyblink rpm for Mandrake produced (hint-hint) and added to the MandrakeClub files for download. praedor - -- "Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. I think the hostss file is OK Anne [EMAIL PROTECTED] log]# cat /etc/hosts 192.168.1.1 gb7tf.org.uk gb7tf 127.0.0.1 localhost I checked the process list and nmbd -D is running , but no sign of smbd. Looks like its getting killed as it tries to start. I tried starting smbd manually in deamon mode, it gave the process ID , but no process was running, syslog showed the same as earlier.. Hi, I had to do a complete rebuild of the system here a few weeks ago, my fault , made it unstable wth a mix from cooker. [expert] Making space
I was shocked to realise that my / is running out of space. My current situation is FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hde7 5.9G 5.3G 288M 95% / /dev/hde5 5.9G 2.7G 3.3G 46% /Data /dev/hde6 5.7G 452M 5.3G 8% /Graphics /dev/hde81012M 7.7M 953M 1% /boot /dev/hde105.8G 33M 5.5G 1% /holding /dev/hde9 9.7G 4.5G 5.3G 47% /home /dev/hdf1 5.3G 3.3G 1.8G 65% /mnt/Mdk9_0 /dev/hdf6 3.9G 2.2G 1.7G 57% /mnt/OldData /dev/hdf7 6.7G 5.0G 1.7G 75% /mnt/OldHome /dev/hde1 3.9G 1.8G 2.2G 46% /mnt/windows hdf is the old drive, and to be ignored. Only half of hde is partitioned and used at present. /holding is an ext3 partition, empty. /Data & /Graphics are vfat, and could easily be combined under /Data Question: If I do this, then remove /Graphics, can mcc extend a partition backwards like this? Seems to me that would be problematic. /boot is much bigger than needed, but that wouldn't gain very much room. What is the easiest and safest way of making more space here? No onboard sound card and /proc/interrupts doesn't show any conflicts. One other strange thing though. Harddrake shows the card under 'Unknown/Other' although it's correctly identified as SB Live! (audio) and has the correct driver (snd-emu10k1). I may try moving it to another slot and let harddrake reconfigure it to see if it makes a difference. Near-end collisions have been know to occur on short cables and be resolved with longer cables; but I don't have a specific example as that experience was circa 1991. On the other hand, if near-end coll. are not the problem, and the coll. are only seen on one box, I might be tempted to swap the NICs to see if the problem changes. That said, this is ethernet, and collisions are normal to some extent. I was once doing some tests on a server/router pair and found that there were 30% collisions on a direct 10baseT/CAT5 link -- turned out to be the pseudo-random backoff algorithm in both machines was causing the problems. Both were trying to be aggressive in getting their data on the wire resulting in tons of early colisions. This is something that can't be fixed easily -- low-level driver changes needed -- no idea if that is in the Linux drivers, or in the NIC's logic (probably the latter)... > > > 3. [expert] Write to ext3 data partition
Hoping someone might be able to help me. Mandrake 9.1 Created 2 data partitions previously vfat to ext3 on install I was able to mount and write to them as root right from the start, but not as user, then :- I have been able to mount them as user, with some trial and error and frustration. Below is part of my /etc/fstab file showing the recalcitrant partitions. /dev/hda6 /mnt/slack ext3 defaults 0 2 /dev/hda7 /exp ext3 noauto, users, defaults 0 2 /dev/hdc8 /new ext3 noauto, users, defaults 0 2 /dev/hda1 /mnt/winc vfat noauto, user, unhide 0 0 /dev/hdc1 /mnt/xp vfat noauto, user, unhide 0 0 /dev/hda9 /mnt/wing vfat noauto, user, unhide 0 0 /dev/hdc5 /mnt/spare vfat noauto, user, unhide 0 0 I have tried :- mounting them as the vfat partitions as :- /dev/hda7 /mnt/exp ext3 noauto, user, defaults 0 0 /dev/hdc8 /mnt/new ext3 noauto, user, defaults 0 0 Also :- /dev/hda7 /mnt/exp ext3 umask=0,user,noauto,defaults 0 0 /dev/hdc8 /mnt/new ext3 umask=0,user,noauto,defaults 0 0 Also :- /dev/hda7 /mnt/exp ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc8 /mnt/new ext3 defaults 1 2 Also :- /dev/hda7 /exp ext3 defaults 0 2 /dev/hdc8 /new ext3 defaults 0 2 Also :- /dev/hda7 /exp ext3 noauto, user, unhide 0 0 /dev/hdc8 /new ext3 noauto, user, unhide 0 0 And various derivatives of all the above, and rebooted in between each I have used chown to change the owner owner charlie group root Made them alone, rwxrwxr-x All to no avail. The /etc/fstab entry at least allow me to mount the filesystems as user. Access is denied to user. anything can be done as root. Help, I may have missed something obvious. I do not plan to create any more ext3 data partitions if I am unable to mount them as user? Maybe this is normal with ext3 partitions? In the past leaving them as FAT32 was so that they could be accessed by both windows and Linux, but on the way to moving to native Linux alone, I wanted to use ext3 data partitions. Basically what I was saying is that it doesn't sound as though there is any advantage to me in taking the effort to learn it. I have no problem with anyone else that wants to use it.
