Do the kde sounds use alsa? If you use the OSS audigy driver, then you do not use alsa; alsa and OSS are mutually exclusive. Perhaps the artsd server is not starting properly? artsControl says that it is running. You might try logging into another WM that doesn't use artsd (a KDE-only feature), and check your sound apps there. If you have Gnome installed, you could try that, as it uses esd as its sound server, and can be set to emit the same sort of event-based sounds that KDE can. Hi... Sorry to but in - but I am waiting to install the new kernel .25 but I am holding off until I can find and build the new rams for Nvidia, I can find the rpm on the Mandrake club site, but I cannot find the src rpms, do they exist and if so, where would they be located. Thanks -Original Message- From: Vincent Danen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 August 2003 18:15 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Kernel Update - NVIDIA Driver Problem On Fri Aug 01, 2003 at 06:08:17PM -0500, Jeffrey Litterick wrote: I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 on a computer with a Geforce 4. I am or should say was using the standard NVdriver that was installed automatically with Mandrake 9.1. When I first installed Mandrake I had the same problem then was I do with the secure kernel but the enterprise kernel worked just fine. So I just changed my default kernel to the enterprise one. The problem is that I used RPMDrake to update my kernel to the new .25 versions which also fixed a problem I had with ipsec not starting on startup. But after the update I could no longer start the X server. Because the NVdriver kernel module was not being loaded. I checked the modules.conf and modules file and everything is correct but a modprobe returned with a Could not find file and lsof showed that it was not being loaded. Doing a file search I found that the NVdriver.o.gz was only in the old .13 enterprise kernel module directory and was not in the new updated kernels module file directory. So I first I tried to just copy the driver over and run a depmod -a but it came back with unresolved symbols. Then modprobe could find the file but of course would not load it because of the unresolved symbols. You had the binary driver for nvidia installed. I did build a new one and it should be on Club (I didn't put it there, but asked someone else to). I just assumed it would be there. If it isn't, I can email the webmaster again and get him to put it up. I'm on holidays right now, still reading mail, but anything that requires work will have to wait till I get back. =) What you can also try is to use the nv driver for X (I believe that's it). That's the non-binary/commercial version of the driver, and should work although you likely won't get 3D or acceleration. Since none of that matters to me, and since I dislike the binary drivers, I use the nv driver instead of the one nvidia closed. -- MandrakeSoft Security; http://www.mandrakesecure.net/ Online Security Resource Book; http://linsec.ca/ lynx -source http://linsec.ca/vdanen.asc | gpg --import {FE6F2AFD : 88D8 0D23 8D4B 3407 5BD7 66F9 2043 D0E5 FE6F 2AFD} Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? What happens now is that the data transfer is limited to Comcast's upstream limit (256kbps) because the packets are going out to the internet and coming back to the other PC. How would I set this up so that the data transfer rate is in the range of a local area network (close to 100mbps) by routing the packets to go directly through the hub/switch to the other PC? [expert] Problem installing NVIDIA drivers in kernel-secure-2.4.21-0.25mdk (only)
I've had no trouble installing NVIDIA drivers on kernels 2.4.21-0.13 (up), 2.4.21-0.18 (up, secure), 2.4.21-0.24 (up, secure), 2.4.21-0.25 (up). You get a message about tainting the kernel with a non-GPL license, but the drivers install cleanly and work flawlessly. I've used versions 1.0-4363 and 1.0-4496, initially installed using NVIDIA's new .run package with drivers for subsequent kernels built manually by running make clean make in NVIDIA-Linux-x86-version/usr/src/nv/. However, trying to install them on the secure version of 2.4.21-0.25 always fails (see messages below). It's not a big deal for me since I rarely use the secure kernel, but the change in behavior from previous secure kernels concerns me. Is this a feature or a bug? I tried setting them to play with xine, and then tried play with mozilla, but all I get are system freezes or crashed mozilla. I also tried changing the settings in kde file associations. All suggestions gratefully received, as I can't leave moz as unstable as this. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Try xine with the xine mozilla plugin. http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/xine-mozilla-plugin-0.2-0 30803.i586.rpm The rpm puts the plugin in /usr/lib/xine-plugin/xine-plugin.so. Just copy this file to the mozilla plugin directory and you will have quicktime, windows media player, and real media player file support. Plus, the sound quality is incredible. HTH, John Drouhard Well, I installed it, and xine fires up when the media player is required, I see 'Buffering [0%]' and no sound comes out. At 17.32 04/08/2003, you wrote: Olaf, Within KDE try: Kstart - Configuration - Other - LocaleDrake and select the language you wish to use. Larry It worked, thanks! Now I'm fighting with the modem, it connects to the internet and it's able to ping an address (I had only my public IP and the PPP server IP, I tried both of them) but it's impossible to reach any site, so it must be a DNS problem. RE: [expert] Kernel Update - NVIDIA Driver Problem
I gave up and downloaded the new drivers. I had to change modules from NVdriver to nvidia to load the kernel module and make the same change in X Server Configuration. But it install and is running fine. It did detect the original Mandrake RPM and removed it before installing. Otherwise it went fast and smoothly. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Kitchener, Steve Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 8:00 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [expert] Kernel Update - NVIDIA Driver Problem Hi... Try going to xine.sf.net and downloading a new version. http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ I actually use this, and it is stable. Mozilla is not the problem. The plugin is not perfect yet, it freezes mine too. Maybe the OSS drivers work better for streaming. I'll look into it tomorrow. [expert] Python Question
Perhaps it would be best offline dunno. But would anyone know the python equivalent to grep Number $HOME/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals | awk -F= '{print $2;}' For the life of me I'm stumped... but that's no great accomplishment. Sorry if it's a bit OT but I don't have any visible friends who know python. *grin* James Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
