[expert] Video Woes

2003-07-25 Thread Alan Carbutt
Hi list,

I have a weird one. I'm running Mandrake 9.1 on my workstation and I
have noticed that all of my video (.avi, .mpeg, etc. files) that are
played through mplayer, xine and noatun are coming out in black and
white. When I play them in aviplayer, they are in color. Any hints as
to what I can do to bring back the color?

Thanks,

[expert] Evolution Browser

2003-06-09 Thread Alan Carbutt
I was wondering if anyone has been able to change which browser opens up
on clicking a link in an e-mail. Currently my evolution opens up
mozilla. I was just wondering if it was configurable.

Thanks,

Re: [expert] root password

2003-02-28 Thread Alan Carbutt
Nikos,

Even better, you can use some live CD distros like Knoppix or Linux
BBC. BBC is far smaller than knoppix and fits on business card CD's.
Knoppix is a full X-enabled linux that allows you to mount local
partitions on the disk drives. These allow you to boot linux up on any
PC with a CDROM drive. I use these guys for such emergencies.

[expert] RPM troubles

2002-12-04 Thread Alan Carbutt
I was updating the latest errata for LM 9.0 and I got the following
output:

[root@x errata]# rpm -Fvh *
rpmdb: Unreferenced page 3479
rpmdb: Unreferenced page 3480
rpmdb: Unreferenced page 3481
rpmdb: Unreferenced page 3482
error: db4 error(-30979) from db->verify: DB_VERIFY_BAD: Database
verification failed

I'm not too familiar with RPM, so I was wondering if anyone has run
across this and if I should be worried about this.
TIA,

Re: [expert] WindowMaker

2002-10-29 Thread Alan Carbutt
Actually, I guess my last post was misleading. I usually do a
re-install and not a by the book upgrade. The only things I didn't
change from 8.2 to 9.0 was /home and /var. Then I had to install from
scratch because I flubbed something in the partition table. In any
case, WindowMaker has been my window manager of choice because it is not
as bloated as other managers. I installed it and I have no trouble with
anything being broken.

Broken on a vanilla Mandrake 9.0. I agree it is not broken on an upgrade.

Hi,

WindowMaker is broken in Mandrake 9.0. Someone told me that I must
create a symlink and WindowMaker will work. Which symlink is it?

[expert] LM 8.2 and NVIDIA GeForce 3

2002-08-22 Thread Alan Carbutt

On initial install on LM 8.2 on my home box the XFree86 install portion
offers me the option with 3D acceleration only with version 3.3.6. Does
anyone know if there is support for 3D in 4.2.0 for NVIDIA? If so, what
do I need to do to update?
TIA,

John

I'm also a contented user of Limewire. With Mandrake 8.2 there are a
few hitches in getting it set up. If you are interested, I can post
some generic instructions to the list.

Cheers,

Alan
