But there's an error in cooker's kernel-source-2.4.21-1mdk. It installs

I'm not sure that I'm reading your numbers correctly. Is 224M your total
RAM on the laptop (I'm assuming a 256M machine with 32M allocated for
 video)?
That's right.

Is it possible that you're reading file/buffer allocated memory
 as free/not free?
Yes, it is possible... I'm not an expert guy O8-)

What does the following command report on both new/old kernels?

dmesg|grep ^Memory

This should report a kernel code number that, even in the most fully
loaded kernels, shouldn't be greater than a couple Meg or so.
Laptop:
- -compiled kernel:
Memory: 224188k/229312k available (1417k kernel code, 4736k reserved, 514k
data, 96k init, 0k highmem)

Memory: 223320k/229312k available (1410k kernel code, 5604k reserved, 1118k
data, 136k init, 0k highmem)

Memory: 70376k/73728k available (1176k kernel code, 2964k reserved, 444k data,
136k init, 0k highmem)

So the only computer that's saving memory for it's own use is the 2nd one?

Why are you blaming a system hang on shorewall?

Are you using cardctl --eject before removing the card?
No, I am not. Running cardctl eject before removing it makes the system not
to hang.

Thanks ;)

Anyway, you've done shorewall wrong. Try specifying different zone
names, then duplicating the policy / rules if you want the same policy
and rules for each interface. For instance:
 #ZONEINTERFACE BROADCAST OPTIONS
 wire eth0 detect filterping,dhcp
 wireless eth1 detect filterping,dhcp
 vmnetvmnet1 detect dhcp

[expert] Ripping recording audio CDs: resources used?

2003-01-31 Thread Joan Tur
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hallo!

I've got 2 computers, 1 PC with a RW and a DVD reader, and a laptop with a
DVD-RW combo.

In all 3 atapi units have something common: ripping and recording audio CDs
take 100% cpu and make the system almost unusable. This only happens with
audio CDs (recording on the fly from the DVD to the RW uses 0-10% cpu if it's
a data CD).

I don't know where to have a look. As I've mentioned, burning data CDs don't
use only 0-10% cpu and the system responds quick. I've booted XP and this
problem doesn't appear there (I use XP to play games).

Thanks in advance :)

Note: under Mandrake 9 with dma on. I'm sending together with this email the
output of both dmesg' commands.

[expert] Shorewall switching between NICs

2003-01-27 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I was having problems trying to configure a wireless nic (configured as eth1),
and then I had a look at system log and found that shorewall was blocking
32768 udp port accesses.

So I added that port to shorewall's rules and that was it...

... but later I was back home (where I use the onboard nic, eth0) and the
problem appeared. I've had to reload shorewall in order to make that
connection work.

Any idea? TIA

I've just set up my USB Infrared adaptor. And it works!

To see if you've got the linux side working:

 $ lsmod | grep ir
 irda 87152 1 [irda-usb]

You may need other modules, depending on the eaxct nature of your IrDA
unit (I need irda-usb, for example), but you at least need this one.
lsmod didn't show any irda modules, but insmod irda works.

 $ dmesg | grep IrDA
 IrDA: Registered device irda0

Wahey! My machine knows it's got an IrDA interface. Make a careful
 note of the device name.
Nothing about irda is shown by dmesg 8-?

$ ps -ef | grep irattach
 root 2237 1 0 23:57 ?00:00:00 irattach irda0 -s

If this process doesn't exist, then just start it. The parameter is,
of course, copied from the device at the previous stage. If you're
running the irda service, then this device is set in
 /etc/sysconfig/irda.
I've had a look at the modules tree and found ircomm, insmod'ed it and now
lsmod shows:
- ---
ircomm-tty 22240 0 (autoclean)
ircomm 8552 0 [ircomm-tty]
irda 96016 0 [ircomm-tty ircomm]
- ---

And ps shows:
- ---
[rootquinipt /]# ps -ef | grep irattach
root 2984 2903 0 18:21 ttyp000:00:00 grep irattach
- ---

To test I'm running pilot-xfer -p /dev/ircomm1 -l, having tryed with no luck
with /dev/ircomm0/1, /dev/ttyp0/1

Maybe despite modules load fine the irda hardware is not supported? 8-? Hope
not...

Thanks! ;)

You'll probably be able to select cups if you first run kcontrol as root, then

No, I haven't. I've tryed to compile after having applyed the acpi patch with

 That

using 9b3 and 9b4 also.

-I've logged in using user A. Sound was working. Then I've logged out and
logged in user B and I've got a message saying that it couldn't open
/dev/dsp. After chmod 666 /dev/dsp it's working.

-drakconf 9.0-0.16 doesn't open and shows the following error message:

Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_type_create(): unknown parent type `12'.
gtkcreate_png: missing png file diskdrake_cdwriter.png at
/usr/lib/libDrakX/ugtk.pm line 759

As rpmdrake opens the install-only part of the old rpmdrake and adding cooker
source is no longer available (at least with automatic downloading of cookers
mirrors' list) i've had to manually download the newer versions of drakconf,
harddrake-ui, drakxtools, drakxtools-newt, and now with 9.0-0.20 it seems to
work fine.

-The Euro symbol is not working. I'm using kde.

Those are the problems I've seen today. drakconf is nicer now than before...

Hallo!

I've installed beta 4 and:

-driver for my Philips ToUCam Fun webcam was correctly installed under beta 3;
under beta 4 it isn't. I've solved it adding modprobe pwc and insmod pwc
lines at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
-first boot after installation has taken me to a console after having been
shown the graphical menu (dm service error ?)
-I prefer the old rpmdrake (soft installer) rather to the new one... I'm
trying to add a cooker rpms source and I don't have that option available now
8-(
-I've installed / in an empty reiserfs partition and kept /home as it was with
no problems. Good work ;)

That's all for now.

[expert] Autoloading a module

2002-08-14 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I've bought a D-Link DWL-650 pcmcia wireless card that's recognized by MDK8.2
and wvlan_cs module is loaded automagically when the card is inserted.

But as connection sometimes hangs and I have not been able to use it in
ad-hoc mode (only in managed) I'd like to try orinoco and wavelan_cs modules
but...

What's the easiest way of changing the default module to be loaded when the
card is inserted? Should I modify /etc/pcmcia/config ?

I've already tryed the following:
1. Card is inserted,
2. ifconfig eth0 down is run,
3. wvlan_cs module is unloaded
4. orinoco (or wavelan_cs) modules are loaded... but then ifconfig eth0 up
doesn't work.

Help is appreciated. Thanks ;)

[expert] Ide drives take 100% cpu

2002-08-03 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I've posted this problem in newbie's list with no luck.

I've got 4 ide controllers, all of them have 1 HD or CD connected as master:
DVD: hda, RW: hdc, HD1: hde and HD2: hdg

I've got kernel 2.4.18.8.1 installed, and bios recognizes both DVD and RW as
DMA. These are set up as scsi-emulated in order for recording programs to
see them.

But when I'm reading from DVD using xcdroast in order to make a image from
which the CDR is going to be burnt it takes 100% cpu cycles (measured using
gkrellm). As it's not a laptop that's not a problem...

... but when recording that image the RW again uses 100% cpu but now the PC
is almost unusable. Using an Athlon 1.2 and 512Mb DDR it cannot be like
that, so I suppose it's ussing polling instead of DMA... am I right?

Well, any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance ;)

2002-08-03 Thread Joan Tur

A few more info: I'm now burning beta 2 isos using gcombust and CPU is no
higher than 6 to 10% 8-?

The PC hasn't been powered down for 2 days...

Thanks.

 Hallo!

I've posted this problem in newbie's list with no luck.

I've got 4 ide controllers, all of them have 1 HD or CD connected as
master: DVD: hda, RW: hdc, HD1: hde and HD2: hdg

I've got kernel 2.4.18.8.1 installed, and bios recognizes both DVD and RW
as DMA. These are set up as scsi-emulated in order for recording programs
 to see them.

[expert] Graphical login after kde3 upg

2002-06-23 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I've removed Kde 2.2.2 and installed Mandrake's Kde 3.01 (/usr), but I can no
longer get to the graphical login. It's trying to get to it continuosly
(screen blinks), and I cannot get to a console using ctrl+alt+f1 (or 2, 3,
4). The only thing I can do is to press ctrl+alt+supr and to enter in safe
mode - text only.

If I start in maintenance mode, normal boot without X I can then use startx
with no problem.

I've also removed (with --nodeps) kdebase and reinstalled it. I thought that
graphical login was in there... 8-?

After reboot I've done the same with gnome-core with no luck. Help is
appreciated.

Here's my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file:
DESKTOP=Gnome

I've also tryed the following /etc/sysconfig/desktop content:
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm

Thanks! ;)

And it hangs a few seconds after having started loading linux from CD. We're

Ah! The mobo has a SIS745 chipset.

Forgive me for asking this question yet again; there must be an answer,
 surely.

My Kodak DC3400 camera is auto-detected by gphoto2 correctly as being
connected to the USB port. Yet when I try to use the camera an error
message tells me that the USB port is busy.
Try to use it as root. If that works you have to add your user to the usb
group, log out and log in and try again...

If it doesn't I suggest you to visit www.gphoto.net and join their mailing

Look for the system sshd_config file, usually located in

X11Forwarding yes
That file didn't exist in the directory, so now it's working. Thanks!! ;)

[expert] SIS630 mobo chipset...

2002-01-09 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

Does any of you have that mobo chipset in your laptop? It's got linux
drivers for it at the following address (vga and lan):
http://www.sis.com/support/driver/linux.htm

If you've got a laptop with it: how is it performing? Is the video card able
of playing 3D games as well?? Is it hard to install Linux on it?

Thanks in advance! ;)

libopenssl0-0.9.6b-1mdk

I also hate that. I've already sent a message to the bank with no answer

hasn't worked. I've also tryed that option with Opera with no luck...

And i haven't found that option in Mozilla or NS6.2... 8-?

[expert] Pcmcia ethernet card problem

2001-11-19 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I have a D-Link DFE-680TX fast ethernet pcmcia card; it was working fine
under 8.1 connected to a 10 Mb hub. But now it is connected to a 100 Mb
switch and samba connection or internet connection hang immediately.

And it is working fine under WinME 8-(

It's using tulip_cb module. It seems to have installed fine (ifconfig shows
eth0 with it's IP address) but when i try to transfer something connection
hangs. I have to pull it out and plug it in again...

Thanks!
