[expert] A7N8X deluxe MB and nvidia ASUS V9180 Graphic card pending problems.

2003-11-18 Thread L.V.Gandhi
I have A7N8X deluxe MB and nvidia ASUS V9180 Graphic card in a mandrake 9.1
box. I had a problem for hdd that it was accepting dma status and hence it
was giving udma 2 status. This problem was solved by the kernel
kernel-2.4.21.0.22mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm
I have also installed the its source rpm
kernel-source-2.4.21-0.22mdk.i586.rpm.
I have also installed NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm.

Now I installed nvidia run script for nvidia graphics. But I get only 2D
acceleration. Excerpts from XFree.0.log is given below.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failure reading EDID parameters for display device CRT-0
---
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture.

Further I get from dmesg as below
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 203M
agpgart: unsupported bridge
agpgart: no supported devices found.
0: NVRM: AGPGART: unable to retrieve symbol table

1) what to do to get 3D acceleration? Whether agpgart has to do with 3D?
2) I get white screen with yellow lines when I try to play xine. After that if
I run xawtv I get the same white screen. But xawtv or mplayer runs ok if xine
is not started or if logout then relogin and start xawtv.
3) For parallel port I have following lines in /etc/modules.conf.
alias parport parport_pc
I need parport for parallel port scanner. Now i am unable to get parallel port
in lsmod. But i get dmesg following line.
spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
How to make parallel port working in this MB. in cat /proc/interrupts
I don't get irq 3,4or 7.
4) Though my modem works OK in both serial ports, my pda jornada 690e is not
getting connected with this MB serial ports. I could get connected (of course
in windows) with i815 board. What can be the reason.
I want to make 9.1 work with this MB before moving to 9.2.

For me also it worked out of the box. mdk9.1 has generic NVIDIA GeForce4
driver 'nv' as you have given in your XF86Config-4.

And I am pretty sure that it is running with AGP set to 8x in

You need not reboot to check it. it can be checked using
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lvgandhi]# cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log|grep AGP

xine is not at all working for me.
I will be thankful if you can say which dvd drivers you removed.

Further in mdk I have problem of harddisk not getting udma5 as default in
hdparm -i /dev/hdx with this A7N8X MB and mdk9.1. but it shows in knoppix
3.2. Can you share your experience of your harddisk with respect to udma

You should have the output from vinyl player to go to line-in of your
soundcard. In sound mixer(like Kmix) you should select line-in for recording
purposes. If the speaker is connected to speaker/lineout port, then if you
play the player, you should get sound from speaker when the OS is working.
For this no sound s/w(playing or recording) need to run. If not then there is
problem with /dec/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp

xmms-diswriter is to rip mp3 to wav only. for recording gramofile is better.
but it is console mode. you can use audacity or rezound for gui. but this

[expert] hdparm values

2003-09-25 Thread L.V.Gandhi
I have two hard disks 20 gb seagate and 40 gb samsung. I see in BIOS they are
100 ATA. However when I use hdparm, i get follwing results.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lvgandhi]# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount= 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq=  1 (on)
 using_dma=  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly =  0 (off)
 readahead=  8 (on)
 geometry = 2434/255/63, sectors = 39102336, start = 0
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lvgandhi]# hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.37 seconds =345.95 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  4.17 seconds = 15.35 MB/sec
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lvgandhi]# hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

 Model=ST320413A, FwRev=3.39, SerialNo=6ED1JBLC

I have following lines in dmesg.
blk: queue c03cb420, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0x)
ide0: Speed warnings UDMA 3/4/5 is not functional.
blk: queue c03cb55c, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0x)
ide0: Speed warnings UDMA 3/4/5 is not functional.

hdparm -X 69 /dev/hda also doesn't help.

but for the same hdd, with mercury mb and 815 chipset, in mdk91, I used to get
buffered disk reads nearly 29 MB/s.
Now also in knoppix32, I get the following.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount= 16 (on)
 I/O support  =  0 (default 16-bit)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.36 seconds =355.56 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  2.40 seconds = 26.67 MB/sec

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

 here it is udma5 where as in mdk it is udma2 only.
I tried /etc/sysconfig/harddisks with X 69. still no use. Any help to change
udma and speed will be appreciated.
