[expert] Where's the list resolved!!!

2000-11-11 Thread logos

I found my problem. I just got mail from my @home provider that they just
majorly upgraded the mail server and had a hardware failure. I suppose if
linux-mandrake sees my address as defunct after a few days of trying to send
the mail, I just get wiped off the list and have to re-up as I did. All in all
I got weeded for having a non-existent mail address. I'd heard of lists that do
that, sorry linux-mandrake does. But I'll keep my subscription, anyway. Sorry if
my message bothered you, but I really did have a problem!

[expert] Upgrading to 7.2

2000-11-06 Thread Logos

I can't seem to get a good copy of the 7.2 iso to download. Are there any
issues to watch out for by upgrading rpm by rpm? I plan to start with the
kernel, then on to XFree86 4.01, and then work my way through the list as the
dependencies nail me. I am using 7.1 right now. If anyone has done it this way,
let me know about your successes or failures please :)

[expert] Wu-FTPD and Guest Accounts-LM 7.1

2000-11-06 Thread logos

I need help! I have been trying to create a guest
account with only ftp login privileges directed to its own /home dir. I have
followed the instructions from the man pages, the Wu sites, the RedHat
Linux Bible, and even my FreeBSD manual. I have built and installed wu-ftpd
2.6.1(3). Real user logins are ok, no problems, but when I use my "penguin"
guest acct I am unable to login locally and remotely. According to the doc's
I've read they say:

vipw
penguin:504:503:x:guest
acct:/home/penguin/pub:/etc/ftponly
(format might be wrong but in reality it jives with
the rest of the passwd file...I'm at a win terminal and couldn't remember it
exactly)

should work. /etc/ftponly is supposed to be a
"shell" inhibitor of some sort and seems to be a myth everywhere except in the
docs. I have tried replacing it with other "shells" like /bin/false, etc, but to
no avail. Starting with a fresh user and home dir, I get the message "230-cannot
not set guest user privileges" or something to that effect and after tinkering I
can get it to log in. But the next thing is "Segmentation fault" locally upon
the first command past login and logging in remotely gives tells me that passive
mode is refused and logs me out. I do have "guestuser penguin" added to my
/etc/ftpaccess file and the permissions are setup correctly for an ftp dir
(drwxr-sr-x) as far as I can tell...what is the deal here? it's just the guest
user that won't work and I can't find anything to describe a problem with the
recent versions of Wu-FTPD and LM-Google is my best friend but I'm ready to
murder it in frustration ;) Maybe it's not seeing the bin, etc, lib dirs? In any
case, is there a good free FTP daemon out there that supports guest accounts and
has the features of Wu?Thanks:)

Re: [expert] Arggggh...Packet Problems and Black Hoie Theory

2000-10-28 Thread Logos

Okay...I ran the coax to my mdk box locale and moved the modem...of
course I have to move the line as it's strung across the living room and
up two flights of stairs...aha, it works. Go figure...It's got to have something
to do with the length of the cable that connects from the cable modem to the
NIC or else the cable has some degradation along it's length. The LinkSys is
brand new and supposedly linux tested. I also have an onboard NIC in this box by
DAVICOM and it also runs fine. I origranally mounted a small 8-line wall box
to run a line from the modem to my hub and then down the 50ft cable to the win
machine, but there was NO signal then...damn cable has to be the problem and
the actual wall box was also bad.

No firewall because this machine is only hooked up while I'm on. I will be
networking the machines again when I'm comfortable with Linux/Unix type OS's.
I don't fully understand ipchains and ipmasq'ing. I want all the machines to
"route" via this machine. But I also want to be able to compile a new kernel. I
have tried that a million times and I'm always missing this or that .h file or
this or that .c file...I used the development setting to install mandrake from
the ISO images I burned...re-installed, still no good...I can't figure out what
I'm missing...but until I do the machines will remain connected or unconnected
as they are...now I must move the modem back to the other machine to avoid the
grief that will cause if I forget.

[expert] Arggggh...Packet Problems and Black Hoie Theory

2000-10-27 Thread Logos

Okay... I have @home service. My connection consists of a 50ft CAT5 straight
cable connecting my LinkSys LNE100TX to a cable modem which I share with
another member of the house. Reason it's 50 ft away is that the inline for
@home was too difficult to move and the CAT5 is easier to work with inside the
walls. The reason they aren't networked has nothing to do with my problem.
My setup ran fine for a good while until the last two weeks I have been having
trouble with http and pop3 addresses. I went through the re-config and
re-install craze and still the same results. I understand Ethernet cable needs
to be <300ft(100m) but I'm at 1/6th the limit here. The win machine that shares
the modem with me has no problems with the pop mail nor the http addy's. It's
as if the connection degrades. So I check ifconfig and see tx errors where I
have seen few before. I use "dhcpcd -h cxxx-a" to config eth0(LS LNE100TX)
by dhcpfine. But my mail has been timing out everytime, my http access is
crippled to the point where sites load and then the speed diminishes as it
loads...it's getting to look a lot like Black Hole Theory(don't ask for an
explanation :)) and the page never finishes...I get "Document contains no data"
errors when I try www.google.com and we all know the front page to google is
about as bulky as one grain of sand to a beach. I have checked the netcable for
continuity with my multitester and got true and equivalent readings for each
set...is it possible that the length of this cable is the problem here? I did
have the machines networked once and ran the cable to this machine via a hub...

once again...cable-->cable modem-->50ft CAT5 cable-->LinkSys-->eth0/tulip

If it works on the winmachine, it's not likely @home's prob...I just can't
determine if it is the cable length or something is amiss in a config
somewhere. I hate to have to move this machine around.

[expert] Flickering X - Reboot seems only cure

2000-10-19 Thread Logos

I have a curious problem...

Sometimes when I leave the machine running and the power management daemon
shuts the monitor off, when I press a key or move the mouse to bring the
display back up, it continually flickers with mouse movement. This doesn't
happen all the time, but enough to be annoying. It also happens when I
ctrl+alt+fx to a different ttyxx, but then again, not all the time. Generally I
run enlightenment as my DM, but I have also experienced this with other DM's
like KDE, Afterstep, etc...nothing seems to cure this problem except a reboot.
I have tried restarting the server from the login manager after logging out of
my current DM, ctrl+alt+backspace to kill and re-login, and other things to no
avail. I have a PCChips PC100 M741lmrt mobo with an SiS 6326 chipset. I use
the SVGA server set at 16bit color at a res of 1024x768 normally. I have tried
different settings and still the flickering occurs sporadically...sometimes I
can have an uptime of weeks without it occurring and sometimes just a few
minutes. This has happened with every installation I have ever performed of
both mdk 7.0 and 7.1. It's got to be a hardware issue or an issue with whatever
daemon puts my monitor on standby. I thought apmd controlled this, but
disabling it doesn't prevent this from occurring. So, am I missing something
here? My monitor is Energy Star Compliant as most are (KDS Visual Sensations
7e) and I am running the stock X-server set that installs with the mdk 7.1
ISO downloadable set...All my hardware is supported, at least experimentally,
by mdk 7.1 on the surface, but is there a known issue with any of the
aforementioned video hardware? My 6326 set relies on 8mb of memory from my 160MB
of RAM and I'm not running any resource sucking graphics programs or games,
sometimes the flickering occurs when I've rebooted and then left it at the
login manager. It remains off until I touch a key or move my Logitech
MarbleMouse-two button(recognized as a Generic PS/2 with 3 button
emulation enabled)..it comes on for a second and the monitor returns to standby
during mouse movement and when mouse movement ceases. What's going on here?
This didn't occur with mdk 6.5 or redhat 6.1 installs.

[expert] Wu-FTPD 2.6.1(1): Problem with creating a guest user(Mandrake 7.1)

2000-10-17 Thread Logos

I recently upgraded my wu-ftpd to 2.6.1 from 2.6.0. I never really gave a
though to configuring it previously as I didn't use it. Now that I plan to use
it, I want to create a guest user...here's what I did:
1.under bash:
useradd penguin
passwd penguin
(and all the good pass change stuff omitted here)

2.under vipw:

penguin:x:502:506:guest acct:/home/penguin/./incoming:/etc/ftponly
(supposed to set ./incoming as the root dir for the acct and
/etc/ftponly to prevent other command shell activation)

3 Added the line "/etc/ftponly" to /etc/shells

4. Create dirs for guest user:

cp -r /home/ftp/* /home/penguin/
chgrp /home/penguin/pub

5. In /etc/ftpaccess added "guestuser penguin"

and this, according the the redhat linux bible and other wu-docs, is supposed to
create a usable guest user for ftp services only. But where does /etc/ftponly
come from? it's not in the src or rpm packages...is this an actual shell, a
list of permissions, or what? When I look at the permissions for
/home/penguin/pub/incoming I see "drwxr-sr-x"what is this 's' in the group
permissions? I get the message upon password entry under ftp, "550 - Can't set
guest privileges Login failed." for the penguin guest acct. chmod does
nothing, creating an /etc/ftponly file doesn't work

[expert] SMC Ethernet Adapter-USB-Not really a linux question but...

2000-10-17 Thread Logos

This is not really a linux question, but...

I have a linux box, a bsd box and a win box(both 98 and Win2k)...for the winbox
I have a SMC USB Ethernet adapter. I've been messing with my LAN for about 8
hours now and am positive that everything is configured correctly, as a matter
of fact, by the books. The winbox cannot be seen nor can it see anything else
on the LAN. I thought perhaps it might be a cracked wire somewhere along the
cable or a mis-wired wallbox, but I've checked it and everything is literally
straight cable...no accidental crossovers. I used a multi-tester and check the
wires in pairs and everything is A-OK electro-mechanically. I'm guessing there
is some issue with the SMC converters that prevents them from being connected
into a hub...I really don't think there should be, but as it was supplied by
@home, I didn't get a manual or other info with it, nor have I yet located a
support or FAQ site. There is no RTFM here...does anyone have any experience
with this sort of adapter? It can't be windows or linux and the bsd machine
isn't even connected. each machine is uniquely addressed is able to ping
itself, but the winmachine just doesn't wanna play with the big boys...please
any assisstance would be appreciated with this converter. All I want is one good
ping to and from this machine and the rest is academic.

[expert] kernelbuild and my machine-BEFORE AND AFTER!

2000-10-09 Thread Logos

I made it through kernelbuild...some of the return messages were difficult to
understand...but everything seemed to work. No "real" error messages or missing
components(development install of Mandrake 7.1). Tells me that
bzImage-2.2.17-... is in /boot. Upon rebooting. 2.2.15 is still the kernel and
the only kernel to load. The 2.2.17 kernel is nowhere to be found. So, just to
experiement, I type "make install" in usr/src/2.2.17...puts the kernel into
place. Reboot and 2.2.17 lives! But...it finds 8 scsi drives(I only have an
ATAPI/IDE CD-R/RW that needs any scsi support) and refuses to identify my
NIC's. How do I get my kernel source to include all the "drivers" and modules
that I have for 2.2.15 so that when I config, they are active for selection? I
guessing this is where I am falling short...I can potentially identify
everthing I'll need from the 2.2.15 source, but I need to know if this is going
in the right direction or am I heading for yet another failed kernelbuild???
Can I re-use the config file from 2.2.15 in some way in order avoid make
xconfig again?

Currently I am re-making the 2.2.15 kernel for re-installation so everything
works again and I can more easily identify the source files.

Praedor or any one else who has knowledge and conversation with the holy kernel:

Maybe you can help me understand this a little better. I got past all
the hurdles and got to the make xconfig step in buildkernel. Now here's my
dilemma...I have a C-Media chipset (8738am) which is supported in Mandrake 7.1
iso image. The support is marked EXPERIMENTAL which is not a problem for the CD
install. I have no trouble with it as long as I use the eSound daemon instead
of OSS to play back mp3 files. However, when checking off my xconfig I come to
the sound card menu and C-Media is locked out of selection. Does this mean that
I need to add the proper include, .o files, etc from my previous source set
(2.2.15) for make xconfig to allow the C-Media support to be selected? 2.2.16
installs by RPM with little difficulty and no impact on my system, but I'd like
to try 2.2.17 in any case. Do I need the headers for 2.2.17 for this to work
correctly? R'ingTFM is not doing me any good since I'm doing that now for this
C-Media support. The difference between the source RPM's, the tarballs, and the
bz2 files has me in a little mental knot. If there is a headers file for 2.2.17,
where can I find that? If you consider these newbie questions, sorry, but I
don't think they are questions that a newbie can possibly answer...

Re: [expert] AT&T cable modem

2000-10-09 Thread Logos

Anthony, try installing the dhcpcd (note the extra 'cd') rpms from the mandrake
installation cd or elsewhere. Use: "dhcpcd -h cXXX-a" from an su terminal.
This should set eth0 to use dhcp AT&T style. It will hang up for a moment as it
talks to the @home dhcp server, but wait until the prompt comes up and ping
your 'static" ip to check it. You should pretty much wipe out all your configs
for eth0(write them down in case this doesn't work) from netconf. You can view
all the info dhcpcd collects and uses in /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info. linuxconf
hasn't been very nice to me in setting this up. This works for connecting the
cable modem to a Davicom 9102 NIC and Linksys LNE100TX NIC. An odd occurrenc
that has occured on the system I connect using the Davicom 9102 NIC is that in
linuxconf, adapter 1 and 2 have identical configurations...dhcp, ip is blank
netmask=255.255.255.0, dev=eth0, mod=dmfe) and for some reason they both keep
coming back like that post-boot after entering "dhcpcd -h cXXX-a" It works
so I'm not attempting to fix it...but if anyone has insight on why this
occurs...let's hear it! (by the way...dhcpcd fails on my system during boot and
I enter that command under su after I log in).

[expert] C-Media 8738am Chipset and MP3 playback

2000-10-01 Thread Logos

Does anyone have problems with this chipset and playing MP3's? On every
installation and re-installation of mandrake I have ever done on this machine
with this chipset MP3's stop playing at random spots and gets stuck. In XMMS and
kmp3 the counter actually flickers as if it were a CD skipping...sometimes it
basically fast forwards...sometimes it jumps back 2 secs then forward 10 secs
repeatedly.

Of note, in make xconfig it lists C-Media support as experimental. Has anyone
had this problem and if you cleared it up, how did you do it? It's is annoying
to pause and unpause every few minutes(sometime every few seconds). I thought
at first that maybe the files were corrupted...but even the mp3's I have
encoded myself produced this.

[expert] Re-arranging my intranet-NEVERMIND :)

2000-09-28 Thread Logos

Is this list slow or what? In the time it took for this message to appear, I
figured it out myself :)

On the same note:

how would I get a command into rc.local that would initiate "dhcpcd -h
cXXX-a" at startup. Apparently the dhcp client that boots at startup is not
the one @home needs it to run. I tried just putting /sbin/dhcpcd -h cXXX-a
directly into the file and of course it didn't work. Do I need to use a
statement similar to:

[if -x /sbin/dhcpcd -h cXX-a]; then /sbin/dhcpcd -h cXXX-a; fi

please feel free to remark on a horrible interpretation but it's bedtime and
I'm tired of looking at config files for the night.

Currently I run a network like this:

@home cable modem->SMC USB Ethernet Converter(NIC)->Win2k Server->LinkSys
LNE100TX(NIC)->HUB<-Davicom 9102(NIC)<-Mandrake 7.1
 with excellent results!

To sum up before I get started: I want to configure my Mandrake box-433mhz PII
with a Davicom 9102(it works fine) NIC-to use @home services. The modem
converts to ethernet and I will connect modem to Davicom NIC, etc.

I'd like to know if anyone has had success with interfacing the SMC USB Ethernet
converters with Mandrake and what you did to make it work. I'd like to make the
Mandrake machine the front runner to my @home connection and do away with
memory HOG Win2k server entirely. I also tried to connect to the modem with the
Davicom NIC in the Mandrake box but couldn't get connected. For this to work,
do I have to have the @home DNS server address and if so, where can I get it?

I am considering using the USB interface solely for the Win2k machine(probably
my best bet in any case as I have drivers for it) and taking the LNE100TX and
putting it in the Mandrake machine, using the mandrake machine as the gateway,
firewall, etc to support that winmachine and an older 180mHz Cyrix box with
a non-X install of FreeBSD. So if anyone has information re: configuring one
Mandrake machine for @home services with a regular NIC or if the SMC USB
Ethernet convertors are compat with Mandrake..it would be great! I have tried
DHCP and BOOTP with no success, also.

[expert] Text Only Installation-LM 7.1

2000-09-25 Thread Logos

I'm attempting to install LM 7.1 on a Cyrix 180mHz machine...as I am using an
old monitor of unknown spec's, I cannot config X and will just use it as a text
only device. Anyhow to avoid the waste of space on this machine X would be, I
chose "custom" installation...everything runs fine up until the point where you
choose the mount points (hda1, 5, 6, 8 on mine) and it will accept no input
from the keyboard except from the TAB and ENTER keys, which does no good.
switching (Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc) proves the keyboard to be functional...There is
nothing unusual to be noticed and no errors(except for it not detecting a zip
drive but there isn't one anyhow)...the last message is in regards to my scsi
interface. Everything is normal except I can't assign /, /home, or /usr because
of this. Is there a known bug in the text install that I am missing on the
sites?

As a side note: rpmfind.net (USA) finally has the 7.2beta ISO "chunk" image on
the site...I think this is relatively new as www.linux-mandrake.com listed a
french site and a swedish site. But today one of the two is now ftp.rpmfind.net
(USA). I tried to download(cable at >200KB/S from rpmfind.net normally) them
today and it was telling me "permission denied". Anyone else run across this
yet? I've been waiting for a USA server to host it...

[expert] Mandrake vs. Satan

2000-09-24 Thread Logos

I would like to find a version of satan-1.1.1 that will compile under Mandrake
7.1. I've added tftp and yp tools (ypcat, etc) according to the docs for
satan-1.1.1-linux. The script reconfig does not find my perl5@ nor my perl
5.6.0 in /usr/bin (and it should). It is a short script that searches dirs of
your $PATH and others. I'm not a perl script expert, but it appears it should
be locating perl in any case. I'm just interested in this program for
educational value. If any one knows of a particular tarball, rpm, etc that
compiles and runs under LM 7.1, please let me know.

Re: [expert] Re: [MandrakeForum] WIN2K

2000-09-18 Thread Logos

I'd advise replacing that NTloader with grub or lilo. The NT loader is a
strange animal. I tried using the NT loader when it was linux first and 2k
second...funny thigs are bound to happen. If you lose the NT loader, getting it
back on their is no fun. Using lilo/grub and a boot disk for linux(after
installing win before linux) has proven to be the safest bet for me. I was a
three time loser in this before I discovered the stability of this logic :)

Re: [expert] odd network problem

2000-09-17 Thread Logos

Internet connection sharing? You didn't mention if that was enabled...Mine runs
fine. You should have an icon in the tray for it if it is running.
I used static addresses 192.168.0.x for the NIC's that connect to the
hub. Don't try to connect the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the
hub. It don't work! You need to run from the modem to the gateway machine then
from the gateway machine NIC to the hub and connect yours to the hub. If you
run it that way...you will need to get another IP from @home for somethig like
$5 a month. This way is similar to IP masquerading. ICS will change your
internal IP(192.168.0.x is a good set to use) to 24.x.x.x or whatever you're
assigned via @home service...but it's always best to connect with server
assigned dynamic addressing(DHCP) just in case. I had numerous probs trying to
connect using my assinged IP.

modem-->ethernet converter-->win98 NIC or USB-->hub<--linux client
^(if you use USB)

ICS turns your machine into a server DHCP or static addressing depending upon
how you set the intranet NIC's. Then with the proper mask for the NIC's (try
255.255.255.0) and use DHCP(server assigned addressing) for your @home
connection. Then hopefully the Billy Gate$ magickal ICS will forward those
packets to the outside world. Send a reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if
you'd like me to take a little time this week and explain all the numbers I
used...as a matter of fact this is being sent from a linux client to you via
win98 :P I use USB myself to connect my modem with a SMC ethernet converter,
not a normal NIC.

[expert] Mirroring and Missing files

2000-09-17 Thread Logos

Currently I am using a Zip100 PP drive to mirror my home directory, mainly to
backup my desktop manager config and menu files(enlightenment-KDE hybrid
environment), among other things. I use the following script:

#!/bin/sh
#
#mirror.sh: Mirror the /home/Logos dir to Zip100 drive
#
/bin/mount /dev/zip /mirror/Logos #mount
/usr/bin/mirrordir /home/Logos /mirror/Logos #mirror
/bin/umount /mirror/Logos #unmount (for protective purposes)

It runs at 2200 daily with the following crontab entry:

0 22 * * * /usr/local/bin/mirror.sh

And it worksexcept:

In my /home/Logos dir I have a subdir called /home/Logos/TransFers and a
further subdir called /home/Logos/TransFers/IMAGES. But the initial TransFers
dir also contains RPM's and Tarballs I've downloaded on the same dir level as
the IMAGES dir. The IMAGES subdir mirrors perfectly, but the all the RPM's and
Tarballs do not mirror. The ZipDisk is formatted with ext2, not that that should
matter. Everything else is as it should be. It is a good image, on the surface,
of my home dir. It is quite plausible that the total size of files
exceeds the disk's capacity in that dir, but I haven't checked them all yet.
My questions are: Does mirrordir except files which exceed the filesystem
capacity in their total sizes combined at the same level? And what could I add
to perhaps mail me a message, after running some sort of directory compare
command to the above mirror.sh script, to let me know that some files may not
have been copied? Or is there a better way than my logic here? I recieve no
error output from it when I look at the logs...I have invoked it through the
crontab configurator in webmin with a "no output generated" message...

Re: [expert] Netscape 6

2000-09-16 Thread Logos

I wish it were as simple as that...the file 'netscape' in the
/usr/local/netscape/ path is a script...pretty simple pretty much just tells the
box to run 'run-mozilla.sh' in the same dir. But the ln command gave me an
idea. That I thank you for...first I made this script called 'runme' in
/usr/local/netscape/(under su):

vi runme

#!/bin/sh
#--runme--
cd /usr/local/netscape
./netscape&

!wq

then:

chmod 777 runme

then

ln -s /usr/local/netscape/runme /usr/local/bin/netscape
(netscape@)

and there it was! all I have to do is type netscape from the command line.
The cd /usr/local/netscape line seems redundant...but for some reason trying to
invoke the netscape script without it caused it to inherit the path
/usr/local/bin/ from the symbolic link netscape@. But I appreciate the reminder
as 'ln' was involved in my brainfart...swing shifts make me real dingy
sometimes. I have never written a script before as I've only now really started
to delve into non-M$ systems...I can't believe it actually worked. I wasn't
about to go editing the actual 'netscape' script. Chances are I'd have had
about 30MB of space filled with a deadscape. I run most everything via
enlightenment and from the command line in eterm..now I can add it to my KDE
environments! Okay, okay , so it's just a baby step...but I think I'm heading
in the right direction! Thanks for the help Barry!

Netscape 6 (beta 2) seems nice, but it seems to run kinda of clunky...anyone
else out there have any kind or unkind words about it? I get a bunch of
non-crashing errors...mostly about loading local '.' files and widgets.

[expert] Netscape 6

2000-09-16 Thread Logos

I've been looking thru documentation and using some trial and error to figure
out how to get a command in one of my bin paths in order to run Netscape 6. It
comes with its own installer and places files into usr/local/netscape/ and runs
with a script called netscape. The only way the documentation tells you to run
it is by cd'ing to usr/local/netscape and then ./netscape. I'm probably
suffering from a massive brainfart and should know how to do what I'm asking.
But as I've been working long hours lately, I've been quite blank lately.
Please help my wounded and shift-warped brain think just this much less...
