G'day

Mandrake v5.3

This was a full clean install of the GPL CD version, minus the non English
Documentation.

When booting under v5.2, I got 2 consecutive lines of "Initializing Random
Number Generator", and the boot continued no problem.

Now when booting under v5.3 I get the same but the first instance has an error
message, stating that the file or directory was not found, or some thing close
to this, then the second instance, all clear and the system boots.

This does not appear to be any great problem, but I would like a clean boot,
and are the 2 instances needed???

Issue the following commands to the modem

everything was working???, and my SMB printer was not accessible, well I

[expert] Kernel 2.2.3-ac4-4 upgrade

1999-03-26 Thread Michael Doyle

G'day All,

The following is the procedure and problems I encountered upgrading to kernel
2.2.3-ac4-4 over a standard CD install of Mandrake v5.3.

1. Downloaded all RPMS in dirs /kernel, /kernel_misc, and /updates from my
local mirror site to my /downloads.

2. Backed up /etc, and /home.

3. startx, desktop KDE, ran RPM.

4. RPM/options to reflect /home/doyle/downloads dir, refresh RPM.

5. Opened the entire RPM tree to enable me to see where the Updated/New RPMS
were.

6. UN-installed old kernel RPMS.

7. Installed Updated RPMS.

8. Error pop-up box on the kernel.rpm install "could not install kernel" after
all had appeared to have been completed, and it had disappeared from the RPM
Update tree

9. Went to the top of the RPM Tree and worked my way down UN-installing old and
Installing new RPMS where required.

10. Edited lilo.conf to reflect the new kernel.

11. Ran lilo.

12. Logged out of KDE, exit, alt/ctrl/del.

13. Shutdown progressed OK for aprox half of the required shutdowns, and then
hung :-

14. BIG RED BUTTON.

15. Loading Swap Partition insecure permissions 0660 suggested 0600.

16. Checking file system due to big red button shutdown :-)))

17. Ever module loaded with OK :-

18. Login Prompt.

19. Logged in as root, mouse running, still ran mouseconfig.

20. startx, KDE desktop, OK.

21. No printers available, deleted local and SMB printer using print-tool,
attempted to add both printers again, local printer not detected.

22. Applied fix as suggested by D in my last kernel update.

Fix:
KMod

If you use kmod, you will find it useful to edit /etc/conf.modules.
Here is an example of the lines that need to be added:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378,0x278 irq=7,auto

KMod will then automatically load parport_pc (with the options
"io=0x378,0x278 irq=7,auto") whenever a parallel port device driver
(such as lp) is loaded.

23. Ran Print-tool, add local printer detected, added and tested OK.

24. Added SMB printer, unable to obtain test printouts, ping the 3 win98 boxes
worked, network neighborhood unable to see Linux box but able to see each win
box.

25. Edited the new smb.conf. /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart, OK.

26. Restarted each win box, network neighborhood reports network not
accessible, but loaded their respective network drives on the Linux box??

27. Each of the win boxes is able to access the Internet via the Linux box, but
not using it as the DNS server.

28. So the network is there but it is not?? Still unable to access the SMB
printer, from the Linux box, all win win boxes can print to it OK??

29. Everything else appears to be working OK, including sound.

30. All round comments, fairly trouble free install.

31. HELP, required with the network problem, and yes eth) was loaded OK on boot.

32 COLD BEER, Ahh.

G'day,

Small problem, I wish to change my method of connection (24/7) to my hub,

but now wish to use Mandrake V6 using slip, the problem is I get connected,
but keep getting an error message that DIP cannot open ttyS1 as it is
locked???

I remove the lock from /var/lock/, but same problem.

Not a biggie but for the life of me I cannot fix this one :-)))

Re: [expert] SLIP

1999-09-13 Thread Michael Doyle

Steve,

The reason behind wantin a SLIP connection is that by setting &D to 0
instead of 2, is that I can bring the server down and not hangup the
connection, saves a phone call or 2.

G'day,

Well done Steve, I don't know whats happened to the nice friendly Mandrake I
started out with last October, it seems since the release of V6.0 the rot has
set in, and this being one reason for lurking over the last 3 months.

Don't know what killed it but try the following to see if it gets it going
again.

cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc.local

Add the following to the end of rc.local

echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s xxx.xx.x.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0

Save

./rc.local

Hope this helps
