Re: [expert] Anybody had trouble with KISDN on Mandrake 7.0

2000-02-09 Thread Oeystein Hermansen

I found the solution myself. It was to easy.

In the adminprogram for KISDN, called KCMKISDN, there is a section where
you set the path to the to deamons. One path (don't know which since I am
sitting at work right now) points to /sbin and on to /usr/bin. In the
Mandrake setup, they shall both point to /sbin.

Then it worked. It just couldn't find the deamon to start.

Shure... it's my problem too :-) as far as I'm coming inside the problem I
knew that there is no ioption.ippp0
at your system ( which is needed to do the call ).

I'm running MD 6.1 with the latest updates.
Now I give it a try by installing isdn step by step without kisdn to see
what has to be where.

let's be in contact to solve OUR problem :-)

Re: [expert] RPM does not work in Mandrake v7

2000-02-09 Thread Oeystein Hermansen

Here is my setup.

PC: Compaq Armada 7800 with P2-300mhz, 128 MB memory, Floppy and DVD-rom
(but no both at the same time), and Mandrak v7.0 (second ISO)

The drive layout is the same on both system.

/dev/hda. One pri-part with W2k, one ext. part which contains the Linux
partions Swap, /boot, /home and /. All Linux part are using extfs2
(default Linux filsystem) except swap which uses the Linux swap filsystem.

I have found the problem to be related the to Compaq Armada setup. This
laptop has one removable bay, which contains either the floppydrive or the
DVD-ROM drive. Both drive are made real by the hardware, and when Linux
boot it find both the floppydrive and the DVD-rom. It will find them both
also if non of them is present.Normally I have the DVD rom present.

When I removed the floppydisk mount from /etc/fstab, it all worked ok.

So it seems to me that using supermount on devices that are not there (they
are made virtuall by the hardware), is not a good idea. But I think that
this is an error in how the suportmount functions work. Why should
programs like rpm and the Citrix ICA client be affected by suportmount on
directory /mnt/floppy (or /mnt/A as I called it).Do these programs make
a scan of the local devices (maybe Citrix ICA client does, but rpm ...?)

Here is my fstab file.

/dev/hda2 /mnt/C vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
/dev/hda5 /boot ext2 noatime 1 2
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda7 /home ext2 noatime 1 2
/dev/hda8 / ext2 noatime 1 1
#/dev/fd0 /mnt/A auto user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/CD supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

Just installed KISDN (ISDN package for KDE which work just like Dial-up on
  Win98).

Strange thing: I had used it on Mandrake v6.0 and 6.1 without any
problems. Installled 7.0 and it still worked. But after upgrading fraom
7.0 to 7.0-2 (second ISO image), it won't work.

The error message is "dialing to dev ippp0 failed".

Any suggestions ...

It worked.

Removing supermount made RPM work ok again. And it also made the Citrix
ICA client work ok when I have mapped local drives (eg C:\ on the NT system
was my home directory on the Linux system). So by by supermount. I will
start using you when you do not mess up my system

I think this problem is relative to the supermount bug. Try to comment
the /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/floppy lines in your /etc/fstab and then run rpm
-i your_package.rpm. It solved the problem on my box, i had to remove
the supermount option for these devices.

To see what rpm is doing, type "strace rpm -i something.rpm" as root.

[expert] RPM does not work in Mandrake v7

2000-02-08 Thread Oeystein Hermansen

I have just upgraded to Mandrake v7 (second ISO image)

And now I am having trouble running RPM install.

When I do a "rpm --install xxx.rpm" nothing happens. The sessions hang. I
have tried lots of options like --test, --force --upgrade, --replacefiles,
etc. But nothing happens.

I have even tried a full reinstall.

Any ideas ..?

Thanks

Re: [expert] Upgrade to 7.0? => NO!!!

2000-01-25 Thread Oeystein Hermansen

Regarding the problems with XFS and no cut&paste between Netscape and KDE.

My XFS died while running Mandrake v6.1. Upgrading to 7.0 fixed it again.
And the problem with Cut&Paste between KDE and Netscape, is has always been
there in my setup. I have not been able to do this in Mandrake v6.0, 6.1
and 7.0. I think this is a KDE problem (or maybe Netscape since cut&paste
between KDE and every other X11 app. I have tried works fine).

Hi Allan;

If you are planning on upgrading a "production" machine to 7.0, IMHO I
would avoid it.

I upgraded to 7.0 from 6.1 exactly one week ago and in this week 7.0
has twice managed to bomb the "XFS" making it impossible to get into X.

Friday was the first time it bombed the XFS, I reinstalled and managed
to configure everything perfectly over the weekend...only to have it
bomb the XFS this moring.

All I did was turn the machine on and now my XFS is "dead" and so is my
Xgrrr. :-/

So that box gets unplugged and stuck in the corner until someone can
tell me how to fix this without a reinstall.

Another *highly* annoying thing that 7.0 is doing is that you can not
copy_&_paste from any KDE app into Netscape...what pain.

I read through all the archives this weekend, regarding using
Ctrl-C...Alt-C...it just does not work.

Also for me"supermount" is a super-pain and I wound up removing
anything that refered to "supermount" so I could get my CDRom and CDR
working.

I am a Mandrake fan and am really trying my best to give 7.0 a fair
shake...but this XFS bombing and killing X is a major pain in the ass.

On many of the archives(Mandrake, Deja) I cruised this weekend there
appears to be a fair number of people having this XFS trouble, so my
suggestion would be too wait...unless you have too much hair and need
to pull some out trying to figure this XFS thing out.

- your mileage may vary -
