RE: [expert] more information was needed Samba and WinXP woes

Larry,

Thanks again for your reply. I have seen that article and it is helpful
except for one caveat. We dont run a domain here and do not need Samba to
be a domain controller. I want the XP machine to join the workgroup. Will
that registry change make the difference for the XP machine to join a
workgroup?

Okay, then these articles should point you to the solution.

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=1376&lang=en, a great
general purpose article on samba.

http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/csamba6.html#join , provides
steps on joining the network, including Windows XP

Hope this provides the help you seek.

[expert] more information was needed Samba and WinXP woes

2002-01-04 Thread Todd Zashin

sorry guys I guess I should have given more information.

I have a LM 8.1 Samba 2.2.2 (latest release with updated security patch from
Mandrake Update site) set to Share level security no netlogons or domain
controllers enabled because we are in a workgroup not a domain. I want one
WinXP client to open up its network neighborhood (which is totally weird but
that is a different story) and see that the Samba box is there to share
files. I dont want the Samba box to provide print services either. All I
want the Samba box to do is provide file server services to one WinXP
client. My other M$ boxes are connecting to the Samba box just fine. The
WinXP box is not at all. AM I missing a smbpasswd or encrypted password or
registry change somewhere? Do you know where I can find an up to date HOWTO
on Samba and WinXP communications? Thank You.

Thank you all for your responses regarding XP and Samba. We will take a

steps to take to either upgrade SAMBA to work with XP or change XP to work
with 8.0 SAMBA. I appreciate your time and help.

Linux 8.1? My buddy installed WinXP on his client machine which used to
talk to the Linux box real well and now all of a sudden he cant recognize
the Linux box on his network. Could this be because you have to install
Services for Unix on XP? Is it because he could have his IP scheme wrong on
his XP machine?

Please help. TIA.

Leif,

Go out to a site called Freshmeat.net. I just saw a program that you may be
interested in taking a look into. It is called: BBIagent Router. It is a
single floppy linux based router for sharing a broadband connection. I know
you dont have that but you could still get some information from these
people on your particular situation if you still have no luck.

I want to add Linux to the machine anywase... but I would really like to get

2001-08-29 Thread Todd Zashin

Bare with me...

Go into your win box network settings and add another TCP/IP adapter
pointing to the Linux box as the Gateway out to the Internet. If you have
DNS setup on the Linux box...which you do need to have...point the DNS
settings to the Linux box. I think you also need to have DHCPd running on
the Linux box so that the win client will get its IP from the Linux box.
However, I think you can just add a static IP on this additional TCP/IP
adapter and you will be ok. YOu should check me on this point. The
difference lies in the fact that you are pointing your Laptop to the Linux
box in the Gateway and DNS settings of TCP/IP. Ok? Let me know how you make
out. I read a NHF on Internet Sharing but that was when IPCHAINS was king
but now IPTABLES has taken its place.

I am running Mandrake 8.0 and have run the Internet Connection Sharing
wizard. My problem lies in that the Win2000 "box" is already configured for
a network. I need to somehow allow the laptop to run on two seperate
networks.. perhaps there is some way to allow different network options if I
have a different login name?

That's basically the problem I am having... the already setup network.

I did not see what version of Linux Mandrake that you are running 7.2 or 8
or what? So, I will throw this in for you to look over and see if that
helps you. There is an internet connection sharing wizard within the
control center that you may want to look at. This wizard sets up IPTABLES
and anything else necessary to make Internet Connection Sharing between a
WIN box and a Linux box a snap! My buddy got his Linux box to be the server
and have his WIN client share the connection off of the Linux box just by
using the Internet Connection Sharing wizard within the Control Center. Try
it out. Of course he and I are running 8.0 and that may be different than
what you are running.

Take care Leif,

Hey all,

Just recieved my new laptop for my course starting next week. Now, lets
just
say in advanced, if there is a how-to for this.. just send me the link :)

Anywase.. this is what I have: Linux Mdk 2.4.3 on my desktop computer
connected to the internet with a modem (soon to be high speed.. but lets
work
with the dialup for now). The laptop is running Win2000Pro which is setup
for the network at school.

What I want to do, is use my desktop computer as a "server" for probably 2-3
machines (one of which being my laptop) since my computer will be hosting
the
internet for a couple of computers in my house. I basically just want to
setup internet connection sharing with Linux as the server. My problem
comes
in using Win2000Pro with Linux since I'm fairly new to networks of this
type,
and I have to have the laptop able to work with the network at school (which
already works good).

Any ideas on what I should do? I basically have it setup hardware wise like
this:

Client (Laptop)-HubLinux BoxInternet through dialup.
Client (Comp2)/

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a complete idiot.. just when
it comes to this :)

Thanks again.

Looks like nkfs is configured for kernel 1.3.x (-DLINUX1_3_x) but if you use
a
plain LM8.0 you got kernel 2.4.3
The error itself is that the header files are from kernel 2.4.3 while nkfs
expects 1.3.x.

You should change the configuration of nkfs to match your kernel.

[expert] Linux to Netware connectivity problems

2001-08-17 Thread Todd Zashin

Hi all. I am new to this list and have a nagging question. Please help. I
am running Linux Mandrake 8.0 Freq2 kernel 2.4.5-5mdk on a Pentium 200 64meg
machine with 8gig HD Trident video card hooked to a vga monitor. Here is
what ails my Linux machine.

At work, we have a Netware 5.0 FS. I want to be able to mount a
folder/directory on my Linux box from my Netware File Server because I have
several folders on the File Server that I use throughout my day to day
activities. I would like to save files from my Linux box to and from my
home folder on the Netware box. So, I went out and installed ncpfs and
ipxutils from the 2 cd set. Read the complicated HOWTO. I also made sure
to first go out on the web and search on rpmfind (I think) the dependencies
needed before I could run these packages. So, I installed those
dependencies (one really - I had the rest) before installing the two other
packages.

Once the packages were installed, I went into Linuxconf and chose to make
IPX enabled with auto configure on everything cause I am lazy. :)

Then I went to my prompt and typed slist and got Server (0x8847) not found
in ncp_open. So, then I typed ipx_configure --auto off (I forgot those two
commands at the moment but maybe that is because of my frustration at this
point :) Then I typed ipx_interface delall and then ipx_interface add -p
eth0 802.2 Same thing/error happened when I typed slist. I thought maybe I
need to put the IPX HEX network address of the Netware File Server after
802.2 and when I do I get unrecognizable network address error (something
like this). I have also tried the internal network address to no avail
also. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG! UGH!

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ipxutils and the ncpfs
packages to no avail. I have gone into Linuxconf and switched everything
back to the way it was before I started this whole adventure. I have done
an ipxdump and I see something on my monitor - not legible but packet
traffic is occurring and 802.2 is identified.

So, I have tried and tried and tried and now I am turning to you all for
help. I have installed ipxutils 2.2.0.18.a-3mdk and ncpfs of the same
version. Should I maybe try an older version of these packs? Is my kernel
too recent? I searched on Google.com and a lot of people have been
complaining about this issue but I do not see solutions. Is there any? Is
Mandrake doing anything to respond to this problem?
My Netware box is configured with one physical NIC but has two
protocols...IPX/SPX and TCP/IP TCP/IP is on EtherII and IPX/SPX is on 802.2
the internal network is currently mapped to the ETHERII device
Your help is much appreciated and I am thankful for it. I hope this was not
too long but, I wanted to give as much info as I know because I really need
to get this done.

Todd
