Julius, I have a similar PIII (apart from the RW-drive). No problem with installing either RedHat 5.2 or Mandrake 6.0. Use either OSS or ALSA to get sound. The only disappointment is the %#&"/" Winmodem, but get a real modem instead. Haven't found any use for the DVD yet, only using CDs. You might have to be careful of that 17 gig disk, with regards to primary/extended partitions... If there's a problem, just insert the recovery-CD and restore the Win98 environment (provided you have the different OSes in different partitions) on the Win98 part of the disk. regards, Anders Jarnberg ...Merlin & Mandrake...

It is still a problem with standard kernels because of lacking UDF filesystem support - using Mandrake helps, however, since we're shipping a patched kernel with better DVD support. You can read CDs in a DVD drive even with normal kernels. LLaP bero -- Tired of waiting for Windows 2000? STOP WAITING! http://www.ms-windows-2000.com/
Re: [expert] IBM Aptiva and Linux
I also have an IBM aptiva that i run linux on it does pretty good just don't expect tech support from IBM and if you ever have a hardware problem they will try to make you reinstall windows with their install cd before they will give you any help. Re: [expert] IBM Aptiva and Linux
Hi, [snip] > If it's got USB, disable it. The other thing is that IBM aptiva's (the older ones anyways, not sure about the new ones) came with either an mwave card or a winmodem and soundcard. I'm not sure about the status of the mwave card running under linux, maybe someone else can comment. If you have a winmodem you're most likely out of luck there too. In either of these cases you would need to get a new modem and/or sound card. Also, the proprietary IBM stuff, like fast shortcuts and cd controls on the keyboard might not (probably won't) work either. I'm not too sure though as I've never tried it. Also the DVD may not work. I'm not sure what the current status of DVD drivers for linux are. Cheers, Sorry I'm not that helpful. Re: [expert] IBM Aptiva and Linux
If you hard disk crash, and you buy another one IBM tech support wont help you to restore Win98 ? If you want to install Win98 again, you just have to boot on a Win98 bootable floppy with fdisk before run Win installation program... [expert] IBM Aptiva and Linux
I recently purchased a IBM 500 MHz Pentium III Aptiva, with 128M, RW-drive, 17 G hard drive, and a DVD. IBM's technical support just told me that if I try to put linux on the system, they can not guarantee that I can get anything ever running on the computer again, and will not give technical support even to restore Windows 98, if my installation would be unsuccessful. I thought that IBM, in general, does not object to running Linux on their PCs. (Currently I am running Mandrake-Linux on a Gateway, and that company's technical support never objected to it, they just did not support it). I would like to know if there is some problem with running Linux on Aptiva. I would appreciate if somebody would reply who has already successfully installed Linux on a Pentium III Aptiva., or could note get LINUX running on it. Julius
