 /usr/bin/mailq and /usr/bin/newaliases don't exist anymore. When I do a ls
command, I see that they are now links pointing to
 /etc/alternatives/mta-mailq and /etc/alternatvies/mta-newaliases.
Unfortunately, when looking in /etc/alternatives, neither of those files
 exist. Ugh.

Read the man page for 'update-alternatives'. The important commandline
options are --auto, --display, and --config. You can also do it
manually with --install.

[todd@fiji ~]$ urpmf newaliases
postfix:/usr/bin/newaliases.postfix
  snip
[todd@fiji ~]$ rpm -q --scripts postfix
  snip
postinstall scriptlet (through /bin/sh):
  snip
update-alternatives --install /usr/sbin/sendmail mta
/usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix 30 --slave /usr/lib/sendmail mta-in_libdir
/usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix --slave /usr/bin/mailq mta-mailq
/usr/bin/mailq.postfix --slave /usr/bin/newaliases mta-newaliases
/usr/bin/newaliases.postfix --slave /usr/bin/rmail mta-rmail
/usr/bin/rmail.postfix --slave /usr/share/man/man1/mailq.1.bz2
mta-mailqman /usr/share/man/man1/mailq.postfix.1.bz2 --slave
/usr/share/man/man1/newaliases.1.bz2 mta-newaliasesman
/usr/share/man/man1/newaliases.postfix.1.bz2 --slave
/usr/share/man/man5/aliases.5.bz2 mta-aliasesman
/usr/share/man/man5/aliases.postfix.5.bz2 --slave /etc/aliases
mta-etc_aliases /etc/postfix/aliases

That one command is supposed to make all those symlinks for you.

I appreciate the information, Todd, although by now I've painfully figured
out and put in all the links by hand :-/

No offence, but *who* is going to think that they need to run update-
alternatives after installing a Mandrake-supplied rpm? I did my install
from the CD image created HD directories, and had no reason to think I was
going to need to run anything manually to get those links in place (for
that matter, it's now a system which creates a link pointing to a link
pointing to a link??? That's not very efficient). I'll bet virtually
no one else would, either.

From the rest of your message, it looks like there's supposed to be a
script automatically executed when the rpm is installed, but that *didn't*
happen, just so you know. Please let the programmers know about it, if you
would.

Exactly. Did you do an install or an upgrade? If upgrade, from which
version to which version? I had something like that happen to me
sometime during Cooker about 3 months ago. You can search the list
archives and look for my post about postfix symlinks gone missing (I
actually replied to another guy who mentioned it, and I said Yeah, me
too)

[expert] Lots of things broken in 9.0....

2002-10-05 Thread David Guntner

Having finally installed 9.0, I'm finding things that aren't working like
they should. The msec problem I described in a message that hasn't turned
on up the list yet that I could see, and now this:

/usr/bin/mailq and /usr/bin/newaliases don't exist anymore. When I do a ls
command, I see that they are now links pointing to
/etc/alternatives/mta-mailq and /etc/alternatvies/mta-newaliases.
Unfortunately, when looking in /etc/alternatives, neither of those files
exist. Ugh.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
