She doesn't do Perl Java C or C++ She's strictly old school, 8088

Actually I'm not worried about RH Unless the introduce new ones by
the end of the year they won't have any consumer products they support.
(I'm sure there will be new ones but it is an intresting attempt to
shoot themselves in the mid region.)

https://www.redhat.com/apps/support/errata/

I really mention this because although a known life cycle for releases
is a viable and intelligent concept. 1 year is WAY to short after all
Win98 did have an 8 year life. (Some like ME much shorter but it was a
market death more than a corporate kneecap.) Please MDK if you do
decided to limit the number of products you support, make the life cycle
a bit more realistic.

When I read FUD there is always one of the biggies around: IBM, M$,
Red Hat (reported to me by a customer), and IIRC there was some of
that coming from Intel as soon as they realized AMD's 486 gnawing at
their heels.

So one could guess there is a dependency between the size of a company
and the amount of FUD they hand to you, right?

When someone else announced a product, MS would immediately announce
their own implementation with a shorter delivery date. All vaporware,
of course.

This they did time and time again, and if the product slipped, MS would
slip too, but still just before the other's release.

In this way they repeatedly stole other people's product prospects and
sometimes even drove them out of business (eg Netscape) by using FUD as
a competition weapon.

And still vaporware years later.

FUD is Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt, which is a sales technique used by people
with inferior products.

"Yeah, they're good, but who knows if they will be around to support you?"

It is unprofessional to use FUD. The biggest users ever were the old bloated
IBM (yeah the company nearly knocked out of business for its arrogance) and
even bigger, Microsoft.

RH is a valid linux distro and has considerable server markets, and they
suffer from some problems as well (everyone has them). Their lists are
unfriendly; their organization is inefficient, and they have NO systems on
the Netcraft top 50 uptime list (The only two linux systems listed there are
Mandrakesoft Advanced Extranet Servers). I have not seen RH using FUD, but
then I haven't been paying them much attention. SuSE has used FUD against
Mandrakesoft repeatedly, even to the point of timing their layoffs to the
SAME day that Mandrakesoft announced its IPO. Of course SuSE has deep
pockets behind it, or at least it did when it needed $45 million to stay in
business (Intel and IBM).

It's on cooker mirrors now. My first few updates this mornin
(kdebase*, kdelibs*) broke konqueror. I've fixed it for now by
--forcing their rc6 counterparts from my beta2 CD's back in. ..and

I reckon somebody'll make 9.0 rpms from the 9.1 ones fairly soon,
but unless my experience is atypical, it'd probly be better if they
waited till their tested some more. Today's 3.1 final rpms are only
patch level -1mdk. Heck, Laurent usually gets 'em up to patch level

There are a lot of old'n'bald (using the nickname of a very active
user in a.o.l.m.) people in the Linux community. Just take into
account that the former *nix veterans are coming to age by now.

Although I wasn't yet 50 when I started with Linux but I was over 50
when I discovered Mandrake Linux version 5.3 and now there is no end

Ah, but I still have some minor advantages:

1. I don't have the remnants of last week's dinner on my middle because I
automatically dispose of any leftovers.

2. I am most clearly *not* just another pretty thing hanging around. In fact,
if one might think I was pretty, I can recommend a number of good
optometrists to visit.

So, how soon before KDE 3.1 shows up on the mirrors? Does anyone know?

That would work rather nicely for usenet news, wouldn't it? Of
course, given the current mindset of many people along usenet way, I don't
know if they would necessarily understand the underlying subtlety. However, I
am impressed that I'm not the only 50+ person hanging around Mandrake these

Oh, that. That's the fortune which runs under cron and thus updates my
.signature file. The only *bad* part about it is you never know what you'll
get as a fortune. Over the years, I've added to and deleted some of the
fortunes to taste, but there are still occasions when my signature file is
better than the messages themselves. 8)

That is *truly* great news! Thanks for sharing it. You forgot to put a plug in
there that KDE 3.1 is beginning to appear on the Mirrors... WH! It just
doesn't get much better than this!

At age 57, do I truly want to inflict the visual image of my mother trying to
assist me on everyone? Speaking for the Polident faction of
Mandrake, of course.

[expert] MandrakeSoft back to daily business

2003-01-28 Thread Wolfgang Bornath
As Deno states in his article "The Show goes on" on the MandrakeClub
site MandrakeSoft's plans were approved by the appointed judge dealing
with MandrakeSoft's Chapter-11 filing.

MandrakeSoft got 6 months time to get their thing together and prove
their business plans working.

At MandrakeSoft all is back to business now, the development of 9.1 is
going on and we, the user community are back at our task:

Support MandrakeSoft, each in his own way and limits!
Support with money (the Club, donations, ordering boxed sets, etc.).
Support by helping new users to experience the benefits of MDK.
Support by contributing to the distro.
Support by advertising and advocating Mandrake Linux.
Support by contradicting any Red Hat FUD

And wear your Mandrake Linux Cap (t-shirt, bumper sticker, etc.)
today!
