Craig,
I have used the USR 56k hardware version successfully.
Issues are it cannot be installed during setup 8.1 8.2 as it's detected
and set up wrong. If installed after setup it is detected and works just
fine.

Most PCI modems are winmodems, which means either they don't work or
only work with propietary drivers, with a very few
   exceptions.

Yes, most are winmodems, but I KNOW that some modems are hardware
modems. The walmart.com PC's are hardware modems, but they use
nonstandard IO and IRQ combinations. I wrote a script that (for that
brand of modem) detects and configures the modem to work with Linux.
You could probably take that script and very easily modify it to work
with your modem. It is not an official MandrakeSoft script, but it
works for the immediate need that we had.

I'm using two machines to sync to my Zaurus using USB (technically, it's
Ethernet over USB), so the answer to that is no.

I like the Actiontec call waiting modem, and it says works with linux right
on the box, and give directions in the instruction/install manual that comes
with the modem

None. Internal PCI modems suck. Get an external one. USRobotics
  external is a good choice.

I'm not, both my scanner and web cam are doing just fine. But I've
read of ppl having trouble with their zips and usb 2.0 stuff. I
think the zips are incorrect entries in fstab tho mostly. and I
don't have an usb 2.0 stuff to test on it.

Gee. modems suck. Hang some antennas and share a decent connection.

The actiontec call waiting modems have Lucent chipsets and a real hardware
engine. With 8.2 you needed a makedev/setserial script to get them going. I
will try 9.0 in a couple of days.

The one topic I tried was ok. If I spent some more time with it, I might
have even gotten to like it.

Vox is right in that externals are the easiest to use, If you are doing a lot
of interactive stuff, the connect times on a v.34 are quicker than v.90 or
v.92. If you are doing a lot of downloads, try to find a better connection.
Even ISDN is a delight compared to analog.

I'd be interested in your results. I am on a crusade to learn what works for
regular people as opposed to the technical issues between x and y
chipsets and motherboard features.

Jim Tarvid

I have had good luck with Lucent win-modems for about a year.
