Re: [expert] Parallel printer over Ethernet?

2001-12-07 Thread J Grant

I have seen $40 boxes that you can just plug into the LAN and the
printer and print with IPP over IP etc
comes with a web interface to setup as well

IPP works over the whole net as well, could come in useful

[expert] Parallel printer over Ethernet?

2001-12-06 Thread Alan Wilter Sousa da Silva

Hi List!

I'm looking for a product (if it really exists!) to allow me to
print via Ethernet using parallel printer. I mean, a kind of box with one
RJ input (so I could set a IP address) and some parallel ports, where I
would connect printers. So I would be able to set printers in my linux
(even Winblows and Applows) to print over network. Is such a thing
possible? Is there a such device?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Try looking at Linksys 2 port print server or the HP printservers. Plug them
into the network do some configurations and boom ya got a printer on the
network. Now go and install cups on your linux machines and configure it and
for your windblows install the drivers for the printserver select your
printer reboot and bam start printing.

RE: [expert] Parallel printer over Ethernet?

2001-12-06 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

You are looking for a print server (aka a printer sharing device) as
he noted.

These are small devices about the size of a paperback, that have a
parallel port and a single button on them.

H.P. originated these devices AFAIK.

You are effectively purchasing a very inexpensive computer (so it's not
really computer free) in a tiny case that despools the jobs.

Telnet, and HP Software (though there are other manufacturers which make
them now) permit you to modify and control the device.

Some HP printers have these servers integrated into them, notably the
printers with Ethernet ports.

Some printers provide these devices as add ons for Approx 250.00 USD or
even less.

HP also manufactures a single unit which will permit you to hook up
THREE parallel printers to the one printer sharing device.

You CAN indeed print to these printers directly although it is far
better to let a Samba/Linux box spool the jobs for you to increase
speed.

I.E. Samba gets the printouts from the workstations quickly. The
workstations are free to go about their business. Samba sends the output
to the printer server as it can handle the data.

You can have a large number of these devices on your network. On one LAN
we have 40 such devices, most integrated into the printers themselves.

They can be manually configured or obtain their configuration
information via DHCP.

Under Linux and Winblows, the queues can be configured so that enough
information is provided to the OS, so that the operating system can
automatically configure itself to use the printer...

That is you bring up Cups or Windows, select the queue, and you are
ready to go.

What your are looking for is an HP Jetdirect EX Plus. We use this devise at our
office. It's a little box with a parallel port for a printer, and an ethernet
port. I think they will only support HP printer, but I'm not sure.

We have had great service from Extended Systems' Pocket Pro (must get
pro to get IP stack). These are very small boxes that hang off the
parallel port, and convert to 10bT. It includes a web server for
managing the unit, and is compatible with HP's JetDirect managers.

There are other messages telling you about some devices you can buy, but
do you really need the printer(s) separate from a computer? You could
also hook it directly to a linux machine and then print to that printer
via the network from all your other Windows and Linux machines.

You'll save the price of those pieces of equipment.
