Re: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2 - afternotes
For the interest of anyone that might have contributed or been following this thread, or for someone searching the archives to find the solution to a similar dilemma: I now have the HP950c and can comment: 1) My usual rule is "never buy second hand unless you know what you are buying". I broke that rule this time, and got a faulty printer! I have got warrenty, so it will go back for repairs with little more cost to me than lost time and inconvenience. (The parallel connector is broke, but usb works fine, so I can use the printer now) 2) Again, second hand has hidden costs, the colour cartridge was almost empty ($78 for a new one) and the black one was half full. Even so, I got a $500 printer for $250 + 78 + (say) 40 = $368 so I'm happy. (all prices in Australian $) The Epson would have cost me near $400 locally, and about $320 (+ freight) in Sydney, and even new stuff can be faulty out of the box... 3) Works fine from usb. Very good printer from Windows, the hp drivers are great. From Linux, the default install gives 300x300 draft with a cross-hatched colour. Definately an inferior print to that from the much cheaper Canon bjc-3000 (we have one at work, and I hooked it to my laptop to compare), however, the settings can be improved - I'm still learning, but have now got some very nice prints (not as good as windows though) from the gimp. In any case, the draft quality is all I want for 90% of my prints, so that's ok. All things considered, I'm happy I did the right thing, but if you want a printer to do great prints from Linux now, go the Epson! If you can wait for hp to release their opensource drivers, and the price is right, the HP is good. Trevor
Re: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2
You have got a lot of tips by other users, even one recommending a Lexmark inkjet. I recommend Epson. Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Epson and choose one of the "Perfectly" working models which are supported by the "stp" (GIMP-Print) driver. To install the printer under Mandrake 7.2, search for the appropriate "CUPS + GIMP-print" entry in the printer list. In addition, make sure that you have the newest version of the printing stuff. Read http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php3?sid=20001214090405 After the installation you should get excellent printouts, even if you do not perform a colour calibration ("calibrate-gimpprint" at the command line). In addition, there is a maintenance tool for Epsons ("escputil" at the command line, "man escputil" for documentation). I have an Epson Stylus Color 440 here. The photos look really nice, without calibration and even on plain paper. For good text printing make sure that you have updated to the newest version, as I have told above. There are also good HPs, but HP does not support the free software programmers very well. The new Photo RET III technology is not supported for that reason. The CRET II is under development and I am doing a lot of tests on an HP DeskJet 840C so that the GIMP-Print people can approve the quality. The problem is the transition between black ink and the mixture of all three coloured inks. So HP is not good for photos, but the print heads are changed with the cartridge (better for people who print VERY few pages. For now I cannot recommend HP. Lexmark has started to publish Linux drivers, bur they are not free software (source not published) and there are no PPD (printer description) files for CUPS to use them. So usage under Mandrake 7.2 is rather difficult. The Z52 is also supported by GIMP-Print, but I do not know how the quality is. Canon is also a bad choice, no support for Linux by the manufacturer at all. Sudden changes of the protocol (BJC 5xxx not supported at all) and probably much worse output quality with GIMP-Print than you can expect from Epson. So I think, the Epson Stylus Color 760 is your choice. If it does not work, check http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=96288 And in general, see also http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html before buying a printer. Re: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2 - my final decision
Thanks everyone for the replies. My final decision was to buy the HP 950c. A close decision, but it came down to: Pro: 1) HP was $250, as opposed to the Epson at $400 2) HP had better quality printing (2440x1220 dpi as opposed to 1440x720) 3) HP have recently launched an opensource driver project: http://www.linux.hp.com/printers_and_linux.html. Also HP have employed Bruce Perrens: http://www.linux.hp.com/news_events/perens.html whereas, it is my understanding (although I can't find anything definitive to confirm this) that, although the Epson print standard is open, Epson do not, themselves, support Linux. 4) According to http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html "Note that Epson inkjets are not best for black text, although most of the non-low-cost models will do reasonably well." 5) HP print heads are in the cartridges, so they are changed everytime you change a cartridge = easy to fix/replace print head. Con: 1) Linux drivers for Epson, mostly, work better then HP ones. 2) The HP is 2nd hand (but only used for 6 weeks) 3) Photo printing is better (for now) on the Epson (from Linux) 4) Epson print heads are in the printer, not the cartridges, so cartridges are cheaper (but repairs aren't). Overall, it was a close decision, and if I had had to pay new price for the HP, I would have bought the Epson! The others: Canon don't support Linux, and won't release their proprietry drivers, so their printers are not fully functional under Linux. If they won't support Linux, and I want to use Linux, I won't support them (by giving them my money!). Lexmark are now releasing proprietry Linux drivers for some of their printers, but not my 2030. If they did, I wouldn't need to buy another printer! And they still won't open their propriery interface. Well, I think that's all. Thanks again to all who helped, both to this list and direct to me. lexmark are now producing linux drivers for their printers. In have the z32 model and it works great under linux. They started disrib drivers a few months ago go to www.lexmark.com/ and check out the drivers search. paul -Original Message- From: Trevor Farrell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, 7 December 2000 3:48 PM To: expert Subject: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2 Hi, I know that this is a common question, but I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had experience with either a Canon BJC-6200 or an Epson ColorStylus 760 under Linux (and particularly Mdk 7.2) I have shortlisted these as the best 2 printers in my budget range that are presently available locally. Re: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2
Ken, Thanks for your reply. Interesting that you should mention HP as I have just been offerred a near-new HP 950 at a good price. It is ex-Sydney Olmpics and therefore is also a momento of that event! I normally steer well clear of 2nd hand printers, but might make an exception for this one. Its either it or the Epson (see my prev email re Canon!) Trevor On Friday 08 December 2000 02:57, you wrote: > > Trevor, > Look into the HP printers. Trevor, Look into the HP printers. I have2 just recently purchased fron Staplesd one is the 842 and the other is the 648, the 842 was $149.00 and the 648 was $99.00. Both are networkable and the 842 prints at near photo quality. AND, both work beautifully under both Linux and Winderz. > > Hi, > > I know that this is a common question, but I would appreciate hearing from > anyone who has had experience with either a Canon BJC-6200 or an Epson > ColorStylus 760 under Linux (and particularly Mdk 7.2) I have shortlisted > these as the best 2 printers in my budget range that are presently > available locally. > > I have been to various sites that seem to suggest the Epson is better > supported under Linux, but others describe the Canon drivers as > "operational". > > I am after a printer to do good quality printing - some colour photos, but > mostly B&W - at home. RE: [expert] Printers & Mandrake 7.2
Trevor I have an Epson 760 on my Linux machine, using the parr connection not the USB. It was recoged during the 7.2 installation and was listed in the printer drivers. The only problem I had with it is that after the installation completes and the system reboots during hardware detection I am imformed that the printer has benn removed from my system, I then had to use DrakConfig to get it set back up. As to the print speed and guality I would have to rate it at average or above. Considering that when I got mine it was on sale for $99 and had a $30 rebate I think it is a great printer for $69. Now a word on Canon. Though you can get them to work,in a fashion, with Linux, which is what was meant by "operational", Canon has stated that they do not and will not support Linux nor will they release any of their firmware code so that others might port it to Linux. Don,t get me wrong I think that Canon makes a quality product but not for Linux.
