Even though cdrecord is showing only 10% cpu usage it will still hijack all
the cpus it can and hold them in reserve moreover it will take up most of
your System Resourses which is a combination of cpu, memory, cashe, etc.
This is why all other running processes slow down.

Well, but that's very hardly noticeable. Sure, every program grabs as much
of the CPU, memory, cache etc.pp. as it can get, but cdrecord definitely
isn't the worst example.

Here, I don't have any problems burning a CD and surfing the web. Maybe it
is because I use SCSI, dunno.

No I agree... I don't think it's CPU related: I am looking in the direction
of interrupts etcetera.

I narrowed down the problem to the following situation: it only
happens when I do *data* burning *on the fly*, i.e. directly from
cd-rom to cd-rw (audio on-the-fly would probably cause the same
but I don't do that).

It does not happen when I burn an image from HD.

More suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Felix

Hmm, are you using IDE or SCSI? If you're using IDE, try putting the CD-Rom
and CD-R on different "chains", so that one is on secondary master and the
other on secondary slave.

Even on a fast system cd buring programs will use every cpu they can get
 their hands on.

I should be able to tweak that shouldn't I? I find that cdrecord uses
quite little resources indeed (10% CPU on average).

My system set up is such that I share a DSL connection on 3 machines. To
elininate the problem you are having I installed my cdrw on a machine other
than the one I use to connect to the internet ( basicly I using it as an
internet server) and do all mem and cpu intent activities on 1 of my other
system so that they do not affect my connection speed.

Well, the problem is, all clients are laptops :(

The only "tweak" that might help you to maintain your internet speed is if
you would run cdrecord from the command line rather than from X because kde
and ,to a lessor extent, gnome are also both themselves resourse hogs.

 Hello all,

I use mandrake 7.1 and I like it very much. It is used for internet
connection sharing through isdn with several windows clients on the
 network.

I use the same machine for burning cd's. When I burn a cd, isdn
troughput drops to almost zero... What could be the cause (and
 solution) of this?

??? strange
The problem is for me, the CPU consomption. ISDN uses CPU, and if your computer
is not very strong, it can allow all its ressource to the burning...
I don't know, maybe use 'nice' .. My 2 cents
