Re: [expert] USB Modem
I have a similar problem. I've got a USB serial interface with the FTDI 8U232AM USB to serial converter chipset and an external modem. I've been trying to get the modem to talk to the converter for a long time now; no progress. I can talk to the modem with minicom, but when I dial out, it starts the PPP connection and then just goes braindead. If I put it back on a standard 9 pin serial connect it works fine. Seems to be an issue with the status of one of the serial lines. Sure do wish I could deactivate those wasteful standard serial ports. Re: [expert] USB Modem
Well...at least I don't feel as alone in this situation as I did before. The only thing I know to do is to install a breakout box in the normal serial line with the external modem, and record what's going on with the lights. Then, attach the breakout box to the USB serial interface and hook the modem up to that, noting the differences. Have you tried that? Or is your modem the type that connects directly to the USB bus? [expert] usb modem under Mandrake 8.0
I have got an ESLA Microlink 56k USB modem. When I try to set up a data connection to this modem via Kppp, I get either an error message (either modem busy or modem not found, depending on the device selected in the kppp setup). Please note that in the ACM driver section and the details for Elsa Microlink 56K USB at http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ are several error similar reports for usb modems with Mandarke 8.0. Has anyone an idea, what might be wrong? Mail Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/ Read the box your modem came in--bet it says "Requires Windows 95 or 98, 166MHz or faster Pentium type processor" or words to that effect. I don't know if there are any true modems on the USB--just modem-like devices driven by software (sometimes miscalled winmodems) is all that I have seen sold. Linux is likely _never_ to support this sort of modem, which really isn't a modem. The issues are that some of the software driving them is *patented* and *secret*. Binary-only drivers, sitting in the core of the operating system, is a great way to be unable to tell if your system will remain *stable* or not. That is anathema to the linux community. Example: The Personal Internet Appliance (PIA) sold at www.planetpia.com is a cheap mobo with a PCTel software modem (including a linux driver). I support three people who have them. All three have reported hard-lock crashes (and I teach them program crash recovery first thing--how to kill a crashed program without rebooting) and this off a well-cooled moderately clocked mobo running Debian--the most conservative of the major distros. I cannot tell for sure if it is the modem code, but in most cases the crashes came from playing an online game. Civileme
