I hope lawyers don't search Google when you need one.

At the bootsplash press F1 and at the prompt key
 apci=off and then press enter.
This will cause the system to boot on this occasion with apci=off and
if the boot to X is successful you can than add it to the append line so
that it will occur for subsequent boots/reboots.

Did the re-install, same problem again with the printers: cups doesn't
install. X automatically just did fine though=:o)

As to the lilo-appends: I never got that far.
I just tried to get the Nvidia-kernel to install after rebuilding it from
source. It seemed to install all right (after a download install-orgy of
unsatisfied dependencies) same as the rebuilt GLX rpm and that was the end of
it. When trying startx the screen goes black and everything hangs including
keyboard. So a hard reboot is called for with a lot of horrible consequences.

Maybe I'll feel brave again after a few drinks and try a second time=:o)
I did save all the downloads.

Good Luck,
HarM

I also got mine from there.

The installer will work and perform differently on different
systems/hardware.
This is one of the things the Beta is to help identify so that in the
subsequent betas/rcs,final all or at least as many as is possible
hardware variations can be taken into account and the installer can
perform to the same level and with a high 5 of success.

Unless I missed it on the cooker list recently, at the moment, on
some systems to use the nvidia drivers you need to append lilo and boot
with apci=off

Strange I had no mishaps like that whatso-ever not on the upgrade nor on the
clean install. I got mine off the nluug ftp site.

X was indeed automatically configured which is risky indeed.

On the other hand my printer didn't install at least it didn't seem to
although it was recognized just fine.
Never got round to trying it though, I've already hosed up the clean-install
when trying to get the Nvidia drivers working=:o(
Should've known it wouldn't work.

I'll be re-installing again this evening=:o)

Good luck,

I'll tell you one thing, it was not the same damn one I used when I was
trying to get past the individ, pkg selection screen when trying a
graphic install.

I'll try to get individual "packet selection" in text install mode.
I'll try to get over this system-info loop.
I'll try to get the bootloader installed so that I can integrate it
into my main lilo.conf

I'll try to get some sleep tonight...

I'll get another ISO from a different server although the mirror I
used (University of Munich, Germany) has proved to be a reliable
source in the past.

I'll cross that bridge when

Thanks, I did mot know this. Normally I don't do Beta testing. I just
had no more friendly tasks on my desk for today, only those which I've
been pushing from one drawer to the other for weeks now.

I would not look for much difference in the outcome tomorrow.

I experienced almost the identical scenario on my 650 Athlon, though I
did not get the kernel error.

At the System info screen I kept selecting a different item and hitting
next/previous and anything else that looked like a button and finally
the installation went to the next level.

To cap my successful installation at first boot I was greeted by a host
of modules not found errors, no sound, no network, blah, blah, blah

BTW for the Beta1 unless it fails X is auto-configured without allowance
for user input.

[expert] YaBir (Yet another Beta install report)

2003-01-13 Thread Wolfgang Bornath
Hi,

Here goes:

Current state of box:

80G hd, 512M RAM, Celeron1100, GeForce4

hda1 Win_C
hda5 Win_D
hda6 Linux swap
hda7 old Linux
hda8 old Linux
hda9 9.0
hda10 9.0

hda7/8 are old installations and the space is dispensable
hda9/10 is my working installation with ReiserFS

There's another 20G of free space available.

Started with expert mode installation

   a) Mouse wheel would not work, tested all options. In 9.0 I chose
PS/2 Generic Wheelmouse and it worked (Logitech)

   b) In the partitioning screen I created a new partition (hda11) to
be mounted on / with ext3 filesystem. After hitting "Format" it
   echoed: "no partition hda11 available".
   Reproduced that 3 times.
I then chose hda7 to be / with ext3. This worked.

   c) Packet selection: the inner screen for individual packet
selection is cut off at the bottom so you cannot click on "OK" or
"Next" or whatever is supposed to start installation. F12 (next
   screen) doesn't work here.
Started all over in text mode.
Same issues as in a) and b).
Packet selection did not give me the "individual" option. When
installation commenced I realized that although I unmarked GNOME it
   installed all GNOME packets.
There was an error: "Error while installing packet kernel-"
   I opted to go on.
Rest of the installation and post-installation went ok until it
   came to bootloader installation.
I chose to install it in the boot record of the partition. After
that it showed the small screen with all informations (country,
soundcard, etc.). From there it went into a loop. Whatever I tried
(TAB, ENTER, F12, ESC) all brought me to one of the configuration
tools for one of the listed items. Had to hit the reset button. I
was surprised that it still worked, had not used it for a lng
   time.

   d) No X configuration (or does that come after the point where I
   was "looped"?

I don't know where the error during installation of the kernel packet
comes from. The CD is ok, ISO downloaded with wget, burned with
cdrecord and md5sum checked.

I'll have another try tomorrow.
