2001-02-16 Thread Jerry Sternesky

Bill,

I have Ximian(Helix)-gnome installed and I have the preview .8 version of
evolution installed. BTW, it looks real nice and is exactly what I am
looking for, if I could get the pilot sync to work.

Also, when I looked at the README about compiling evolution it has a section
where it needs to configured for pilot syncing. Do you know if that was
enabled by default with the .8 preview release? I have conduits in my
pilot-link menu choices, but when I select one gnome-panel opens and no
evolution conduits appears with the others. You also commented that the
1/1/3 build is the stable one. Are there rpms/src rpms for that? If so
where can I get them, if not where can I get the source that you are refering
to for the 1/13 build? All web searches are taking me tow
ww.helixcode.com/apps/evolution.php3 and I am not finding much off of that.

I have a slight instability with gnome, mostly I suddenly get save you self
stopped running and until I select remove program it keeps coming up every
minute or so.

I did a compare of required packages and what I have, the only one less than
the stated version is gnome-vfs. I have .42 installed and evolution page
states .5. Could this be causing issue with the pilot sync? I also, don't
seem to have a package called gnome-xml installed.

I would love to get this going, so if you have any thoughts or suggestions I
would appreciate them.

Thanks again for all your help,

Jerry S.

For both Nautilus and evolution I tried the update scripts.

I started helix-update, connected to the evolution snapshot site. The
version they were offering was dated 12/29/00. I get "There were conflicts
attempting to install this update: libgtkhtml.so.4- is needed by
perl-GTK-GtkHTML-0.7003-4mdk. Since I am not sure if any programs are
relying on it so I don't want to UN-install it.

For Nautilus I get the script from the eazel site and run sh
./eazel-installer.sh. It connects to the servers and I step through the
dialogs. Right before it start to download rpms it tells me Mandrake 7.2
isn't a supported release. So I download the redhat 6.2 rpms as previously
mentioned and give them a run through and get dependency errors relating to
rpm, libbz2.so.0, bonobo, libbonobo.so, libefs.so, libghttp, Gconf and
gnome-vfs all being need by various packages. I download the devel package
like they suggest and they don't want to install either

I think at this point I can live with out Nautilus, it looked nice enough to
try, but I am disappointed with Evolution. I really wanted to give that a
run since it seems look like it is what I am after.

O the quandaries, should I stop while I still have a functioning system or
push the edge a little further? I am begining to think if I want this to
work I am looking at source code and compiles :(

What rpm's did you dl & try to install? When I started this, I brought
all Helix rpms up to the version on the Helix website pkg list. Then I
dl'd & got Nautilus up & running. Once there, I dl'd just the Evo rpm to
see what dependency issues might still exist. Only 2 other pkgs to
install at that point. The stable Evo version is from 1/13. I'm waiting
for a concensus from the list as to the next one to grab. I've made this
my day-to-day mail app and can't afford stability issues.

this much fun with other OS'es, do we?

Re: [expert] gnome questions

I tried the Ximian Gnome install too; it was hard to do because the d/l of
the files using their automated installer kept hanging and needing to be
restarted. Once I had everything d/l'd and installed, I made the ?mistake of
telling it to keep my current login manager (kdm); when I tried to relog in,
neither gnome nor sawfish were in the choices for desktops.

I also tried d'l'ing just Evolution to install just that (I have all the base
gnome libraries installed from the original MDK install, so I figured I had
the support libraries I would need, but was put off by the negativity of the
install README, so I decided to bail and wait until version 1.0 comes out.

On thing I do note, though, is when I log in to gnome from kdm, I do seem to
have sound ...

Re: [expert] gnome questions

2001-02-11 Thread Jerry Sternesky

I am using the stock gnome that came with 7.2. I have been thinking about
giving the Ximian stuff a try, but the installer doesn't reference Mandrake
7.2, it stops at 7.1. If I use the installer and let it update the system
will I trash anything? I seem to recall seeing mixed comments about this on
this list. I can live without the sound if I get the other functionality I
want. Both would be nice :)

Be a little patient with me on this, I have never been a Gnome user. I would
need to do
First a Helix install
then a Natutilus install
and then evolution.

Or can I grab them all from 1 place in 1 shot?

Thanks,

Jerry

I have a stable Ximian (Helix) Gnome, with Nautilus & Evolution (which
is great). According to the Evo mailing lists, the pilot sync'ing works
- don't have one myself. Are you using the stock CD Gnome? If so it may
be worth your time to 'upgrade'. As for the sound in Gnome, for some
reason I have to keep Gmix active for sound - that's a mystery I haven't
been able to solve. I'm using Alsa drivers for my AC97, but check a
mixer anyway. Doesn't seem to matter which wm I try, either.

[expert] gnome questions

2001-02-10 Thread Jerry Sternesky

I have a stock 7.2 install, X 4.02, all the update patches except for cups.
I keep getting dependency errors when I try to install that. Another issue
for another time. Does anyone have a stable gnome? I installed, both KDE
and Gnome, I have full sound in KDE, none in gnome. When ever I exit gnome
x-windows crashes. I compiled gnome-pilot with --enable-usb-visror=yes and
gnome-pilot-conduits. I can get the visor to sync and get the user name,
however, it errors on the office conduits when attempting a sync. When I try
to configure any of the other conduits, it crashes and complains it is
mis-configured.

I am looking for a way to use my visor info in an intergrated desktop and
gnome appeared to be ahead on this, but the issue with the desktop stability
is not leaving a good impression.

While jpilot is a nice application and functions well, it doesn't give me all
I want. Any thoughts, suggestions?

BTW on an old install, I didn't have much luck with kpilot so I figures I
would give gnome a shot.

Thanks,

Jerry
