Re: [expert] wheel mouse with 5 buttons - how to program extra buttons?
I've been wondering how to do this myself. As well as trying to configure the buttons for my "Internet ready" keyboard, but I've not had much luck! But somebody once gave me some information that "MAY" work. I tried them in a round'bout way, but didn't get anything to work. Maybe I'll give it another whirl. But here's what I was using as a format/example. Maybe it'll help you. http://www.linux.com/enhance/newsitem.phtml?sid=1&aid=11801 http://www.linux.com/enhance/newsitem.phtml?sid=1&aid=12340 Let me konw if you have an success. I have a Kensington Expert Pro mouse. 4 buttons, scroll wheel/button, track ball, and 5 "Quick Start Buttons." It would be sweet to have *terms open up when I hit thos buttons! :') tdh -- T. I have a Microsoft optical wheel mouse with 5 buttons. How can I change what the buttons do? currently the left thumb button loads the home page, instead of going Back a page. [expert] Wheel Mouse driver bug
I'm not sure if it would be helpful to mention this here as well, but I believe I've found a bug in the standard PS/2 wheel mouse driver. I have done this on numerous hardware platforms and it does the same on all. The only common thread here I believe is I'm using Microsoft wheel mouse. Currently I'm testing with a PS/2 Intellimouse. During Mandrake installation if you select a standard PS/2 wheel mouse it is fine until reboot after installation is complete. Then the mouse doesn't work and it goes crazy. Jumping all over and causing erratic behavior. If I install using just the standard PS/2 mouse driver then it works fine after reboot. Then I can go into Hard drake and change it to a wheel mouse and all is fine. This has been this way all the way back into mandrake 7x days. I am using a Belkin KVM switch at work and I have discovered that switching from the linux box and back again, causes the same behavior. the mouse cursor drops to the lower left corner and goes crazy when you move the mouse. I have found that if I do a CTRL-ALT-F1, and then ALT-F7 the mouse driver is fine. I believe the two incidents are related but I don't know what is causing it. The reason I bring this up is that I have seen many many complaints about mouse driver problems and I suspect it may be related. Just my 2 cents worth. On this one I waited until after the install was complete (used Logitech MouseMan+ for install) then edited /etc/X11/XF86.config-4 and changed the protocol to "IMPS/2" Both have worked for me. I'm installing again (lost hda1) and same thing happened with generic wheel mouse, I'll post results of mouse config after install completes. -- Ken Thompson Payette, Idaho Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nwaa.com Sales and brokering of antique autos and parts. I did need to introduce the mouse to the basestation. It didn't work in W2K either untill I did that. Press the "connect" button on the base and then, within 3 seconds (ymmv) press the connect button on the mouse (under the mouse, you will need a pen of other sharp device). Depending on your kind of wheelmouse, you might be able to make the wheel directly recognized in X applications (not specifically the window manager). This works for me, with a cheap intellimouse compatible, and I _don't_ use imwheel at all ... I just put the "ZAxisMapping 4 5" line in my XF86Config, and it works like a charm for a lot of applications (including Netscape). Put it in the Autostart folder if you're using KDE (which it sounds like you are).
