Not quite what you're after but if you also have an Internet keyboard:

For mouse things, I did find this but haven't tried it too much yet.

I've been wondering how to do this myself. As well as trying to

But somebody once gave me some information that "MAY" work. I tried

give it another whirl. But here's what I was using as a format/example.
Maybe it'll help you.

I have some sort of cheap generic wheel mouse (it doesn't have a
manufacturer name on it; just "Made in China"). It works fine across
reboots. Never seen any problems with it.

[expert] Wheel Mouse driver bug

2002-02-17 Thread lornes

I'm not sure if it would be helpful to mention this here as well, but I
believe I've found a bug in the standard PS/2 wheel mouse driver.

I have done this on numerous hardware platforms and it does the same on all.
The only common thread here I believe is I'm using Microsoft wheel mouse.
Currently I'm testing with a PS/2 Intellimouse.

During Mandrake installation if you select a standard PS/2 wheel mouse it is
fine until reboot after installation is complete. Then the mouse doesn't work
and it goes crazy. Jumping all over and causing erratic behavior. If I
install using just the standard PS/2 mouse driver then it works fine after
reboot. Then I can go into Hard drake and change it to a wheel mouse and all
is fine. This has been this way all the way back into mandrake 7x days.

I am using a Belkin KVM switch at work and I have discovered that switching
from the linux box and back again, causes the same behavior. the mouse cursor
drops to the lower left corner and goes crazy when you move the mouse. I have
found that if I do a CTRL-ALT-F1, and then ALT-F7 the mouse driver is fine. I
believe the two incidents are related but I don't know what is causing it.

The reason I bring this up is that I have seen many many complaints about
mouse driver problems and I suspect it may be related.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have had to do a couple of things with different installs.
1) Used the "generic ps/2" mouse in the control center after the install -
worked fine the first time I installed 8.1 using ONLY the download install
disk.
2) Tried to use the above method during install (all 3 download disks this
time) and the mouse went "Plumb Nutz" ... On this one I waited until after
the install was complete (used Logitech MouseMan+ for install) then edited
/etc/X11/XF86.config-4 and changed the protocol to "IMPS/2"
Both have worked for me. I'm installing again (lost hda1) and same thing
happened with generic wheel mouse, I'll post results of mouse config after
install completes.

I just set one of these up, and it is fairly accurate to say it worked right
out of the box. I did need to introduce the mouse to the basestation. It
didn't work in W2K either untill I did that. Press the "connect" button on
the base and then, within 3 seconds (ymmv) press the connect button on the

Depending on your kind of wheelmouse, you might be able to
make the wheel directly recognized in X applications (not
specifically the window manager). This works for me,
with a cheap intellimouse compatible, and I _don't_ use
imwheel at all ... I just put the "ZAxisMapping 4 5" line
in my XF86Config, and it works like a charm for a lot
of applications (including Netscape).

That will work for KDE, but I was hoping for a "one

Put it in the Autostart folder if you're using KDE (which it sounds

Global startup commands in:

Didn't know you were supposed to use -k. Maybe this is why mine didn't

You may create a imwheel.lnk and put it in the autostart folder for each
user who wants it working. That covers the KDE sessions.
