Colin,

Just a comment on Marks' reply about CPU cycles.

I think he'd looking/pointing in the right direction.

I have a continuing problem on one of my machines with the same type of
behaviour.

It's an AMD K6-2/500 running basically stock 7.1 and KDE 1.99 (I think)
BUT and this is the important bit - there's only 32Mb of ram and it's
slow ram to boot.

My other beast is a Pentium 133 with 64Mb and side by side the Pentium
is considerably faster than the AMD for many things, StarOffice 5.2
takes just under 6 minutes to become useable on the AMD compared with a
little over 2 minutes on the Pentium.

I guess the only comment is something like --- Go Figure !!

Only our selected Diety knows what's going to happen when I upgrade the
AMD to 7.2 or even 8.0

Cheers

John

Colin,

This sounds more like a problem with your system rather then with the
interface. Like your CPU is already full and there just aren't enough
cycles free to accomodate the current window or app that you're
attempting to use.

I got xfce-3.7.2-1mdk.i586.rpm from cooker.

On my system the cooker rpm added Xfce to the graphical login menu. It starts like
any other WM.

At first glance it seems as fast as Blackbox, but I haven't configured icons for
staroffice etc yet.
Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Re: [expert] XFCE -- the little engine that could!

2001-03-19 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Colin and friends:

Best thing to do if you have any problems with XFTree, xfce's limited
file manager, is to add a menu entry to the toolbar/panel for Konqueror.
In the command line type:

kdesu /usr/bin/konqueror

If you just type /usr/bin/konqueror, you will only be able to use
Konqueror as a user. By adding kdesu as above, it will bring up a
dialogue box. If you want to do any editing only in your home directory
(as user), you can just click on "Ignore". If you want to use it as
root, type in your password. Of course, just to see any file anywhere,
you can still click Ignore and use it as user. By the way, you can this
with any application and in any desktop, I imagine. kdesu is, after all,
a KDE utility.

You can do the same with the terminal. You can right-click on the big
Xterm icon on the toolbar, and replace the command line with "konsole"
and the label, too. This will bring up the much more useful "konsole".
Once again, you can also type in the command line kdesu /usr/bin/konsole
to have the option of using it as user or root. Or you can add Konsole
as a menu entry to the XFCE toolbar/panel.

Hi All,

Thanks to Benjamin for the tip on XFCE it's quick and clean but I have
one small problem with it. I am not sure whether specific to my
installation or whether anyone else is seeing it; I open the file
manager and open say /usr/bin when I try and scroll the list of files it
seems to do it in jumps with long period 5-6 second between jumps the
problem is even worse on a mounted CD. I know /usr/bin is a large
directory and even ls shows some delay before listing it and that CDROMS
are slow devices but what I am seeing make the file manager almost
unusable on any directory with a significant number of entries.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour??? Can it be fixed??

Dear Stephen:

Welcome aboard! By the way, you can download a file of extra pallette
textures for your Setup, Palette. Go to the http://www.xfce.org home
page and look for the file somewhere at the bottom of the page. It is in
tar.gz format. But very easy to install. Just copy it to

/usr/share/xfce

And now untar it:

tar -xzf x.tar.gz

That's it. No need to do another thing. Open up your Setup, Palette and
you'll see the new textures under Argon-abc, Argon-cde, etc. I
personally like to use the Toulouse images under backdrop. Click with
your mouse on the desktop, choose backdrop and you'll find four lovely
pictures of Toulouse, France.

Hi !

Yes - this is indeed a very promising and powerfull WM !! (this is the first
WM that can run xine without any dropped frames while having many apps
running at the same time !!!) ...

But I have a little problem running it on the LM 7.2 I have downloaded
the latest version (3.7.2) from xfce.org and I cannot get the textured color
palletes to work - I had to add this parameter "--enable-old-style" to
"./configure" script ... Anyone has this problem as well ? It seems to be
related to xpm library problem (convert xpm to pixmap) ... I have even tried
the 3.8 from their anonymous CVS but with no luck ...

time.
