You should be able to load up fstab and get rid of the supermounting if
you want to. Personally, I haven't had problems with it.

I'm sure glad to see you stating this clearly as they seem to be denying
the possiblity that this was the case. Since yours IS a MacMillan
package, it means that their release is not as current as the iso that's
just been mirrored around the world.

Most definitely not recent, or final. Hell they are using kde2rc2
(which is some of my problem). I bought it last Saturday at Walmart.
I have never purchased a Mandrake, this was a first, and maybe a last.
I have never heard of anyone releasing to the public (for sale) beta version
without stating it was such. Oh well burning the one disc now and d/l'ing
second now.

Please don't confuse Mandrake with Macmillan. OTOH, all new releases have to be
considered experimental. Linux as well as *the other*. Usually they'll tell
you so if you ask. But Mandrake tries to get the known bugs out, anyway.
(Actually, for all the criticism that it's been hit with lately, I don't think
that Red Hat has been doing a bad job either. They're just a bit adventurous.)
My system at home hasn't given me any grief since I did a clean install. But
their timing was a bit off this time. The word seems to be that KDE2 is a bear
to install if you already have KDE1 installed.

When it comes to distribution of Linux Mandrake they are one and the same.

This is the epitomy of being an apologist. They say "it's not good enough
to release so we'll call it beta" and then wrap it in plastic and sell it.

And a hearty hi-oh silver. So because Microsoft does things poorly it's
ok for others to do it poorly too? Personally, I don't want
"adventurous" when it comes to my operating system. Computers are not
toys for most people who use them. Your mileage may vary but I doubt
you'll get much support for this view in the corporate world.

It's pretty obvious that these distro companies have their expertise in
computer geekdom rather than in marketing :-) I hope they don't all end
up shooting the Linux in the foot as they are doing it to themselves but
it's clear that this sort of thing is going to upset a lot of people, turn
off a lot of newbies trying to make it work and confirm what the
naysayers say about the problems with open source
development/distribution.

At the console (as root) type sndconfig. This should set it up for midi also. I had
a AWE64 which got setup
okay, but something was wrong with the card. I'm now using a Aureal A3 based sound
card which also works fine.

RE: [expert] kde2 sound event sounds

2000-11-01 Thread Klar Brian D Contr MSG/SWS

I did that first, but when kde events didnt work I tried harddrake.
After that, even running sndconfig again will not re-enable sounds at all.
The test sounds come through, and that is it.
Oh well I d/l'ed the two cd's yesterday, just haven't had a chance to
install
them yet (Halloween ya know)
