I just finished playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. To get it working with
sound, I had to get out of KDE (I went to Windowmaker though it likely
doesn't matter as long as it isn't KDE) and started it with soundwrapper. It
worked great.

Under KDE I tried starting it with artsdsp but this did nothing. I didn't
try artswrapper. For the game, try another windowmanager (windowmaker,
enlightenment, whatever) and try with soundwrapper again.

This also worked with windoze games under winex. I did a "soundwrapper winex
War3.exe" for Warcraft III and it worked fine as well.

Hmmm. I meant soundwrapper (which I tried both with the winex command and
wineserver--which I assume actually runs the program...) Soundwrapper, btw,
does work for other non-KDE apps, like Doom Legacy.

I just tried "artswrapper", and it doesn't seem to be doing anything useful.
Mostly it just complains that artsd is already running. :)

Any other suggestions?

soundwrapper is the same thing, but for desktop environments that don't
load ARTS, which is a KDE-only thing. soundwrapper works with esd and
alsa in my experience, though nothing but artswrapper can make Quake3
play on my 815-based laptop, and even then the experience really sucks
:-( Hopefully my next employer will have the foresight to equip my
laptop with a high-powered video chipset...

By "soundwrapper" I take it you mean artswrapper? If so, I would think that
running a wine/winex app would merely require that you prepend the wine
command with artswrapper:

"artswrapper winex "

Have you tried this already?

Well, pretty much anything... "Morrowind" (tm) is the Ultimate Goal, but at
this point, I'd be happy if I could view the "Two Towers" trailer with sound
(via Crossover/QuickTime.) Planescape - Torment, is another experiment that
I've been toying with (without much success.)

These programs (well, I don't know about morrowind) kinda work, but suffer
from the same defect--terrible sound!!! (Or no sound at all.)

I've got my KDE sound set, such that the sound server should "auto suspend"
after 5 seconds. Note that I get no sound, what-so-ever, before it times
out. After that, I get some sound, but it's so bad that I'd be better off
without...

At the moment, I'm running WineX 2.2.1 (as well as Crossover wine 1.1.3?) I
know that they (transgaming?) recommend running with the KDE sound service
(arts?) disabled, but even when I uncheck the "start arts on kde startup"
(and re-boot), the sound is still hosed.. (I know, there's probably some
system service that I could disable, but I'm reluctant to do so.)

Given my experience with SDL games (like legacy doom), I'm convinced that
using "soundwrapper" might be the solution. (Simply because the sound
defects seem very similar to what I heard with legacy doom, prior to using
soundwrapper.) But, I have no idea how to use it with wine. If you have
some insight into this, I'd greatly appreciate it...

Thanks,
-Jason

It wasn't blood in general he couldn't stand the sight of, it was just his

What game are you trying to run? I've got WineX 2.2.1 here, but I havent run
Diablo 2 in a while. At least not since I upgraded. I'm running Open Sound System
from 4front Technologies. Guess I need to test it anyway...
