[C]omputer [E]mergency [R]esponse [T]eam, run out of Carnegie Mellon.

I'm curious as to why someone would object to seeing CERT advisories on this
list. It is the expert list, after all, and what "expert" wouldn't want to be
kept upto date on the latest security advisories.

Someone mentioned that it'd be a good idea to make sure that the subject line
contained the appropriate '[OT] CERT Advisory X' header. That's good
advice. Anyone who wishes not to see it at that point can easily filter it
out, and the rest of us (the majority of respondants) will continue to welcome
them.

Me neither...
I have posted to the list myself when
I feel is something that can affect us all.
just add [OT] in the subject. ;-)

My opinion is that if it involves Linux in general and/or
Mandrake in specific, that it belongs here.

Mandrake seems to have a large number of newbie users. I think some
exposure to things like CERT would be a good thing. If your post has a
subject along the lines of "[OT]CERT Alert " I can't see what the
trouble would be. Security should be of concern to all of us. Hell I was
cracked once on a dial up connection because I had a upload directory on
a rootable proftpd server.

2000-02-07 Thread WH Bouterse

Heck I didn't mind.
You contribute frequently to the List both
with questions and suggestions. An off-topic
item now and then is no biggie as far as I'm
concerned.

These kind of discussions can go wild on some lists so
I hope this will NOT be the case, but felt like responding
both publically and privately as we need to stay away from
"orthodoxy" to a certain extent.

For example I have found the Red-Hat-List to be very helpful
even if I admit I am using Linux-Mandrake. I hope this list
would reciprocate in kind to reasonable questions from RH users.

The extreme examples are what things like
"chicken soup for the soul" have done to my wife's
email account. Glad we dont pay for "per" item ! :o)

Well, while such posts are certainly of interest to everybody, this is
probably _not_ the place. For those who are _already_ registered to
appropriate mailing-lists, you are simply _multiplying_ needlessly
the volume of mail they have to scan (and often to _pay for_).

Also, do you expect the _newbie_ to fully understand the implications
on a CERT-alert message ???

Just my 2 cents...

I have no problem with admittedly off-topic posts, as long as they are
