It sounds suspiciously as if you still have Power Control turned on. If you
want to see the screen saver, in some cases, you must first make sure you
have that unchecked, because *it* will blank the screen, before the screen
saver kicks in, in some cases. Of course, your results may vary. 8-)

If Dave and Greg are right and they may well be try this go to
the screensaver page in kcontrol... they hit the test button... if the
screensaver works there then it could well be power saver. If
not... it may be selecting the Blank Screen screensaver.
James

It still should work!!

Try to setup a smaller time for the screensaver to pop up than the time
you setup for power saving to begin. This will answer your question whether
this or that which starts first.
David, you also can select various screensavers and may be run them randomly
(I didn't experience that) by using xscreensaver.
The Random screensaver you have originally in kcontrol is nothing but a black screen
which of course isn't power saving.

Hi,

Did you install kdeartwork?
All the screensavers which come with kde are in this package.
You can even put your own pictures in the directory
$HOME/.kde/kslideshow/pics
and select Slide SHow during configuring your screensaver.

Give it a try with running this program:

kslideshow.kss

good luck,

Mohand

Hi,

I've been a gnome user for several years and have pretty much ignored
kde. Recently I've read some positive reviews of kde that talked
about the features, shared controls, etc. I decided to give it a
try. Onto my Mandrake 9.0 system, I installed kde*-3.0.5a-1.1mdk.
All seemed fine until the machine was idle for a while and the screen
saver kicked in. It was boringly black. Not having configured the
screensaver for kde, I found Screensaver settings in
Desktop-Configure. All that's there is Blank Screen and Random
and it seems Random doesn't work. Any suggestions as to the fix?

David

Sounds like the monitor is going into power saving mode. Check your power
management settings in the KDE Control Center. It could be that the monitor
is going into suspend at the same time interval as the screensaver. I
believe the X-server can also control dpms settings, so you might want to
look into that also.

Dave Greg,

You've both suggest green mode. That could be the problem. I hadn't
known that KDE had a power save. Given _that_ information, I've now
unchecked Enable Display Energy Saving.

Thanks for the tip. We shall see what happens next :-)

The blank is probably due to the fact that one of the screens in Random
is Blank Screen However if you want a really beautiful one IMHO look
for keuphoria on texstars site.

BTW there is a heck of a battle going on in Cooker to make sure that
kdeartwork is in the next release (I think the screensaver lovers
will win!)
