I'm an impatient old fart so I'd rather run rsync for 20 to 45 minutes per disk than 4 or 5 times as long. :-) However it only helps if you already have a very ISO to begin with. For the Mandrake 9.2 RC2 ISOs I actually used old beta2 images and renamed them. If you were doing Red Hat you'd use older Red Hat images, Knoppix 3.1 renamed 3.2, and so on. Otherwise you probably won't gain anything since there would be far too much difference between the renamed file and the actual ISO you wanted. Not enough similarity to gain much on the download via ftp versus rsync I mean. To Lorne; I can't see the mirror being the problem, it's the one I sync my local cooker tree from. Sometimes I have a major slow down and a few times the connection seems to have dropped totally but it's fairly reliable. If Gary was getting incorrect md5sums from the downloads something else was likely the problem. I've used that exact method for two years now and had a hell of a lot less trouble than any other way. Sometimes during download of large files they may corrupt, reason why the md5sums do not match, but instead of downloading the full iso file, using rsync you can download just the part (bits-or-bytes) missing from the iso. rsync creates a temporarely file with the correct information and fixes the corrupted one. When you download to correct your previous image, use rsync (eg to rpmfind.net). Best to set it up as a script. rsync will use a special algorithm to compare the two images at the bit level and only download the differences. It's VERY quick. -- Regards, Ron. [AU] - sent by Linux.

Does this mean they're carrying an outdated image? As this is a mirror of sunsite.uio.no, I had expected it to be reasonably up to date. Could someone from MandrakeSoft clear this up? PhilI'm not fron MandrakeSoft, but since I wrote the message that placed the dates in question on the two iso's I'll attempt a response. I believe that I should have said in my original message that MandrakeSoft ANNOUNCED the two different Air iso's on January 14th and February 4th respectively. I would certainly trust the VERSION file in the iso to indicate which release it is. The date is correct, going from memory it sounds about right. and a quick check of the master ftp shows the same. lftp ftp.sunet.se:/pub/unix/Linux/distributions/mandrake7.0/iso> ls -l total 1311184 drwxrwxr-x 2 johanftpadm96 Feb 18 10:49 . drwxrwxr-x 6 johanftpadm 8192 Mar 5 13:10 .. -rw-rw-r-- 1 johanftpadm 1398 Jun 30 1999 README -rw-rw-r-- 1 johanftpadm 671809536 Feb 1 07:29 mandrake70-2.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 johanftpadm51 Feb 1 10:05 md5sum lftp ftp.sunet.se:/pub/unix/Linux/distributions/mandrake7.0/iso> > On Tue, 07 Mar 2000, John Aldrich wrote: > > On Tue, 07 Mar 2000, you wrote: > > > Johnthere have been two Air iso's, 7.0 on January 14th and > > > 7.0-2 on Febuary 4th. > > > > > Hmm. They changed the iso image on February 5, and did not change the md5sum file. Using an image with the message digest of 6f01a2df94f8f39d6c73245e9bc87ada, I installed Mandrake, and have been actively using the CD for a week or two with no sign of trouble. I think the image is fine. later, - rick -- Richard Kilgore | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Software Developer | http://lore.ece.utexas.edu/~rkilgore/ Graduate Student in Computer Engineering
