F-spot not importing

2015-08-27 Thread Antti Ahonen
I am using F-Spot 0.9.0~7 on Ubuntu 15.04

After some time of not starting at all, my F-spot is now starting.
Unfortunately I can not import any photos. Import starts, takea a while and
crashes. Seems to import 1 photo every time I restart.

Tried it with a fresh database with no photos at all too, and it did not
make any difference.

Any ideas?

Here is what debug says:

Seems to have some problems with a temporary file, might be from digikam I
also use.

Anybody has any ideas wha to do?

F-spot not working on ubuntu 15.04

2015-04-24 Thread Antti Ahonen
I updated my ubuntu to 15.04, started F-spot. It did work once, crashed.
When I was trying to restart it said:

An unhandled exception was thrown: Sqlite error 11: database disk image is
malformed (SQL: SELECT base_uri, COUNT(*) AS count FROM photos GROUP BY
base_uri ORDER BY base_uri ASC)

Did not start after that.

I tried to remove it and install again, but now Ubuntu software center says:

There isn’t a software package called “f-spot” in your current software
sources.

Can I still run F-spot on Ubuntu 15.04, if so, how?

Re: problem with exiftool

2014-07-14 Thread Antti Ahonen
Did some more testing, I have 2 fuji cameras x100s and xe-2.

Raw files from x100s end up with wrong date if I rename photos with
exiftool, but if I just copy files dates are ok.

Raw files from xe-2 allways end up sorted with the date modified, not date
the photos were taken. No matter if I use exiftool or not.

Canon files work fine (5d, 5dmkII, 7d)
Sony nex-5 had the same problem at some point but it was fixed by some
update.

problem with exiftool

2014-07-13 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi all.

I have one problem importing renamed photos to f-spot. I convert my photos
to year-month-day-original-filename format with exiftool.

Problem is, that when I import Fuji .raf files to f-spot it arranges them
according to modification date, not date it was taken.

Canon files work fine, problem occurs only with fuji files.

Any ideas?

F-spot not importing

2012-06-18 Thread Antti Ahonen
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and the f-spot 0.8.2-4.

Had some minor problems for a while, now getting more serious.

When I try to import photos I do not get to open the "import from" dialog
in the upper left corner of the import screen. It stays gray and only 1
centimeter long, and does not react to anything.

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting, or any practical workaround?

This is what my commadpromt says, if it is any use:

terminal info

2010-12-09 Thread Antti Ahonen
There has been lot's of very good development on the F-spot lately,
thanks for everyone, but there is one thing I do not understand.

On versions up to something 0.7 or so, when I was merging raw+jpg
pictures, the terminal was giving me usefull realtime info on what
files it was working with. I did consider this very usefull, since I
could estimate how long I needed to wait, and also I did see if it was
actually doing anything or not.

Now when I merge my files, the terminal only prompts me on errors.
This means I do not know how long it is going to take, or if it has
already crashed and is doing absolutely nothing.

I do not know if this makes any difference for anybody else, but I do
spend quite a lot of time waiting for the things F-spot does
(importing and merging mainly) and I would love to see how these
things are progressing.

Is there some specific reason for the later versions to lack this information?

Some kind of graphical progress bar might also be nice, but personally
I like most the info in the terminal.

Re: database broken?

2010-11-15 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi.
I put it in bugzilla should be in:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634930
I figured out where it exactly crashes, but did not find anything unusyal on
the photos or filenames or folder they are in.
I also tried to uninstall the extensions, but it just gave me an
"uninstallation failed" notice.

f-spot crashing

2010-06-18 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi.
My F-spot has been crashing quite a lot lately, now that i changed to 0.7
from git even more frequently.
I have had problems for some time with the database, it allways crashed when
I exited from a search dialog and so.

I have been considering starting a new one anyway since I started using
exifrename on 2009 and it would be nice to rename all by photos in the same
way and build a new database with updated names. Still it would be quite a
lot of work (over 20 photos database) so if anybody has good tips to get
this one working it would be apreciated.

BTW: great work on the 0.7, looks very fast and smooth.

Re: f-spot good enough for 22k+ photos?

2010-05-15 Thread Antti Ahonen
I have been running a reasonably large f-spot database for a while myself,
running on 192920 photos (app 2tb) at the moment. So I have been spending
some time waiting for photos to import during the years.

I also have been wondering why it uses so much CPU power to import files.

Also one practical thing I have been wondering: when i import a bigger batch
of photos, I first choose import but when all files are ready I have to
press import again. So if I leave my computer to import stuff for the night,
I will not get to use it in the morning, since I have to press the Import
button and wait for quite some time before I actually can do anything.

And since I will have to also merge the raw files, it takes me a really long
time before I can actually start doing anything.

If there were some commandline tools, I could make a script that would
import photos and merge the raws, so if I leave the computer to do it for
the night, everything would be ready in the morning.

Still I am not entirely against the import with preview. If it would have
more options: like full screen preview, more versatility in tagging,
delete/remove from catalog option and so, I would get most of the things
done at importing stage I need to do.

Hello everyone.

Why does import stop on errors?

2009-08-18 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi.
Thanks for everybody for great work, have one question about the import dialog:

When I import lots of files, I usyally just leave the computer on for
a night or something. There is one thing I have been wondering lately,
why does F-spot have to stop on all errors? If I have a corrupted file
or something the import stops.

So it would save a lot of time, if the import would be done first, and
errormessages would be displayed afterwards. I guess it is important
for some to know erroros while importing, but cuold they be displayed
in a way, that it would not stop the import process, like in the
preview window like other pictures.

If not, please atleast put a skip all button in the dialog when it occurs.

I have been starting to move my photos on a network drive. Did the first

workflow suggestions

2008-12-10 Thread Antti Ahonen
Now when I am doing most of my work on my laptop, I am trying to get my
F-spot workflow going as well.

I do not have much space in the laptop, so I thought that I keep last couple
of moths on my laptop, and then move them to a network drive. This way I can
work with my current files when I am on the road, and back home I can access
my entire database.

But what would be the best way to keep the F-spot database up to date when I
move files?

problem with network disks

2008-10-04 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi.
Since I moved mostly to working with my laptop, I have had to figure out
some new ways to store pictures. I only have 30gb in the machine, 160gb usb
disk and I am trying to set up my main archive on nework drives.

Now I seem to have some problems with working with the network drives. I
thought that they work the same way the USB drives do:
import, choose not to copy files to folder, and wait for the operation to
finish.

It gives me this error message:

Error stating file '/home/antti/smb:/nsd012345/p1_a_1/photos/2008/09': No
such file or directory

So I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas what is wrong, and how to
get it working, I would appreciate it.

flickr upload and rotating

2008-05-18 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hi all.
I have noticed, that when I upload photos to flickr, if i have not done any
editing in f-spot or resize photos while uploading, the vertical photos are
not rotated.

It is no big deal, but it would be great if there would be some kind of
autorotate button in the export-tool.

Idea: Tag hierarchy

2008-04-12 Thread Antti Ahonen
There is one feature I would like to see in the F-spot. It would be great
if I could heve different kinds of tags. A hierarchy for tags like:

1.External tags

These should communicate with the export extencions, like if I have
several flickr accounts, I could tag files with my flickr accountnames
and the
exporter could export those to right place automatically.

Same thing with other external things as well, like facebook,
CD:s, whatever.

these tags would be seen locally, but not exported.

2.Normal tags

The ones we have now

3.Internal tags

Information I need for myself, but do not need to export, like files I will
rawprocess (could have some automation with the
UFRAW), name of the USB/CD/DVD/othe removable media the picture is
located (Could have some features like "Show only pictures
on drives mouned now", "Show pictures on all CD:s" and so on).

These tags shoul also be seen only locally, not exported

Here we could also have the maybee tags, like maybee portfolio, maybee
facebook etc, photos that you might use for some purpose but are not sure.

I know there are propably ways to do these
things already, I just thought it would be nice and simple if I could
have my tags in hierarchy.

merge raw loses the tags

2008-04-08 Thread Antti Ahonen
I think I mentioned earlyer, that marge raw-tool seems to be losing tags. I
noticed this on my desktop machine some time ago, but since I did not know
if the problem was in the machine, or in the software, so I have not been
mailing more about it, and well at the moment the merge raw option does not
work at all on the particular machine anyway.

Now I got myself a laptop, and I have been moving some files from one place
to another. I have my write metadata to file marked, so JPG: keep the tags i
have assigned to them. When I merge photos, i lose most of the tags.

This problem seems to be linked with reimporting. If I import pictures, do
some tagging and merge raw, tags stay. If I import photos with tags, most of
those are lost when I merge raws.

I tried this three times(and I did encounter the ame problem earlyer on
another mahchine), so it seems to be an reoccurring error.

I do not know anything about coding myself, but if anybody has any ideas
what might couse this I would be interested to hear.

Re: Can F-Spot handle a large number of photographs?

2007-12-15 Thread Antti Ahonen
Well it can handle large amount of photos, but it will get slower by the
time. I suppose it depends on the machine used, I use very slow machines
myself. On my hardware it gets somewhat slower around 4-5. When it
gets closer to 10 it seems to get pretty slow and very slow around
12.

It is still useable, alhought things like batch
processing take like half an hour or something.

some small feature ideas

2007-12-01 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hello all. I was just going throught my photos and
came to think of couple of features I would personally consider usefull.

I often do some little editing in F-spot like cropping and such. It would be
nice to have a undo-feature in the edit menu, so I could undo my last move
if nessessary.

Is there a way to do very small
rotating in F-spott? I often have pictures that are otherwice good,
but just couple of degrees away from perfect position. It would be
great if F-spot had some kind of simple feature to do this.

So, what do you think, could these be any use for others?

Merge raw

2007-11-21 Thread Antti Ahonen
First of all
I would like to say that this "marge raw" possibility is great. I
allways shoot RAW+JPG, so it has been very frustrating to go throught
the photos because there has been two copyes of each.

Still I do have couple of questions about it.

I did loose most of my tags. Might be
because my raw files do not have tags, I allways lose my raw tags when
I reimport photos (like when I change to another computer). I
do write the metadata to the files, so
JPG:s still have the tags when I reimport those.

So I would save a lot of time if the merge raw function would use the
tags from the JPG files.

And another thing, can this merging
be done automatically every time I import pictures?

F-spot not starting

F-spot countered a fatal error

Make sure dbus is configured properly or start a new session for f-spot

SVN keeps losing the database

2007-09-17 Thread Antti Ahonen
I just changed into SVN version of F-spot. I have used it for couple of
days, and I have one problem. Sometimes F-spot starts just nicely, but
sometimes it starts with an empty database with no pictures at all.

Is there something I could do for this, it is kind of time consuming to
re-import the pictures all the time?

A null value was found where an object instance was required

2007-09-13 Thread Antti Ahonen
I just updated my Ubuntu to Gutsy, new F-spot looks very good, thought I do
have a little problem with it.

When I import pictures, I get this error message with all the JPG files:
"A null value was found where an object instance was required"
What does this mean?
It still does import the pictures when I press skip, even thought it loses
the tags. Worst problem is, that I can not import any pictures, since there
is no possibility to skip all (is there), only to skip one image at the
time.

I am planning to copu my 15 pictures database to this machine, so it
would be very good not to click the skip button 15 times.

Also would be very nice to get the tags working.

Any suggestions?

These days UFRaw relies on Exiv2 to extract EXIF from RAW files and,
IIRC, most widely used cameras are supported.

I do not think Canon cameras are that rare. If you look at the statistics,
you will notice that actually quite many people have those. Most widely used
cameras are not supported, if Canon is not supported.

Re: Opening with UFraw

2007-07-19 Thread Antti Ahonen

Well the simples way is usyally the best
way. It really does work thank you.

It does still have some problems thought:

Now I can open raw-files with the Gimp-ufraw, but how do I get those back as
versions?

Ufraw is doing the convercion, and sending the picture to gimp, and making a
new version in F-spots versions box, but not showing the editet file, only
the original two times.

Gimp can not save files in CR2, F-spot (if i understood correctly) can not
import files with different extension as versions.

So how can I get the file back as a version?

There was (again) some requests for help here on the list and on irc to
open raw images with ufraw from f-spot.

Per Hub requests, I worked on two ways to allow it, the first with wome
wrapper scripts, the second by changing the OpenWithMenu code in f-spot.

But the solution is easier than that and already available on your
system!

As far as I tested, latest ufraw can open uris already. But the provided
ufraw.desktop files is wrong.

So, spot the ufraw.desktop file on your system (more than probably
in /usr/share/applications), replace "Exec=ufraw %F" by "Exec=ufraw %U",
and rebuild your desktop database (update-desktop-database) and that's
it.

But, as gimp is already listed in the list, you can also install the
gimp-ufraw plugin, open your image with gimp, and ufraw will be fired.

Anyway, this could be related to the speech Jimmac will do tomorrow, but
not entirely... And documentation for this will end up in wiki one day
or another.

Re: ufraw (and others) integration

2007-07-17 Thread Antti Ahonen

Sounds like a very good and simple way to do it. Export to converter and
automated import back as a version are essential rawconversion things
that should be imlemented as soon as possible.

Another thing that has been discussed in this list before, but I do not know
if anything have hapened to it, is the RAW and JPG problem. I myself shoot
both. In f-spot I can only use JPG:s, but still every image is shown twice.
This makes browsing very anoying, and exports do not work if I accidentally
have tagged even one raw file.

So I would find it very helpfull if there was some way to
1. Import files in the way that Raw images would be versions of JPG, or
other way around
2. Way to rearrange my current collection in the same manner
3. Way to assign images I have been editing with another
program/machine/etc. as version of the picture (there propably is some way
to do this already, please let me know), hopefully as easy as possible, like
dragging picture on top of another. Might be usefull if I could even drag
files straight from my filesystem to F-spot and import as version of curtain
picture.

The question should RAW:s be versions of JPG:s or other way around, if some
kind of RAW processing is implemented, of course RAW:s should be the
original pictures and the JPG:s the versions. So the thumbnail would show
the last editet JPG, and when I export pictures it would export last JPG
version, unless asked to use some other version.

If RAW conversion is not going to be implemented, the RAW files should be
versions of JPG:s, just to get them out of the way.

On 7/17/07, David Collett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi all,

I've spent a bit of time searching the lists for where RAW support is
currently at and where it is headed, but it's still unclear.

What follows is a description of a simple workflow which I think would
suit many people in the meantime, and should be easy to implement.

My ideal workflow would be something like this:

1. import RAW files directly from camera/memcard
2. right-click desired photo and select "develop in UFRAW"
3. UFRAW would be launched where I can perform RAW developing.
4. When UFRAW is closed, the resulting jpeg would be automatically added
as a version of the original raw image.

Ufraw can easily be told via the commandline, how and where to save the
output file, suiting f-spot integration. Furthermore, Ufraw can
optionally save an "ID" file which stores the settings used during raw
conversion. If desired, this could be saved, so that if the photographer
decides they dont quite like their conversion, they only have to
right-click and develop again and will start where they left off in
ufraw (the resulting jpeg would become yet another version).

Batch processing can easily be accommodated too. Suppose you have a set
of photos shot in the same conditions and want to batch process them.
You can right-click/develop the first one as described above. What this
will do is set your current adjustments into your .ufrawrc file (a
standard ufraw feature). Now you can select all the remaining photos in
the set, right-click and choose "develop with UFRAW", when the develop
action is invoked with multiple selections, it will launch "ufraw-batch"
instead of "ufraw" (ufraw-batch comes standard with ufraw).

Once the photographer has a good 'developed' jpeg image as a version,
they can further edit it with the standard f-spot set of tools (or
externally via gimp etc).

This may not be the holy-grail of RAW integration in f-spot, but it
would be a big step up for those of us currently using f-spot to manage
RAW photos.

Can other f-spot users let me know what they think of this approach?

Can the developers let me know where I might start implementing it? I
figure I just need to add a right-click menu item which, when clicked
will launch a sub-process (ufraw/ufraw-batch) with the current
selection, then wait on the process to complete before re-injecting the
resulting jpegs back into f-spot as versions. Sounds easy enough?

Thanks,
Dave

Idea: several databases as albums

2007-07-11 Thread Antti Ahonen

There have been some talk about possible album features in F-spot. I do not
know anything about programming, so correct me if I am wrong, but could it
be done this way:

Photos.db file is kind of an album itself, so if we would have for example
photos1.db, photos2.db and so on we would have several albums. So minimum
chances required in the program would be a startup menu, where you could
choose your database, or start a new one, and in the program a possibility
to export photos to another database.

So this way I could have a main database with all pictures, and also
separate databases for different subjects, like "Work", "Family" and so on.

The reason I suggest using the photos.db file as an album, instead of making
virtual albums inside one database is because I have had some serious
performance problems myself with larger databases. I use older machines, and
have relatively large archive, so from my experience I would say that it
gets rather slow to work over 8 pictures, and very slow round 13. So
with separate databases, I could always work with reasonably sized database
and have all operations running nice and smooth.

Before you reply that nobody has that many pictures, and everybody has newer
machines, I must point out that if you take digital pictures, you propably
will end up having a lot of those at some point, it might take years
thought. And about the machines, many people who have older machines are
starting to use linux, because new windows programs do not run in those
anymore.

And there are other advantages of this system as well, like if I need to
show some specific pictures to somebody, like family-pictures to relatives,
I could use all the F-spots search etc. features without having to go
through all the other image material I have on my database.

Well let me know what you think, I thought it might be a good idea.

2007-04-06 Thread Antti Ahonen
Is there a possibility to search files by filename in f-spot? I often
send people resized versions of photos, and when they ask me for the
full resolution ones, they usyally ask those by the filename.

Another thing I was wondering about, is this search by date. It is a
usefull feature, but for me it is a bit inpractical. Smallest time you
can adjust is days, and for me if I happend to shoot some bigger
events, there might be several hundred pictures taken on the same day.
So it would be usefull to search by hour, I would not even say that
searching by minute would be too much.

Or am I just not using it right?

Does editing compress my JPG:s?

I like to use these editing features of F-spot for all simple editing
I do, like cropping and minor color adjustments. Only now I noticed

If I have 2.8MB JPG, after editing (any editing, no cropping) I will
have about 600 KB image.

So what have been lost?

And why is the size of the file not visible in F-spot?

Well I shoot RAW + JPG all the time, and I do keep both files. If I
need to send a lot of files to somebody, or post to the web, I use the
JPG:s. If I want to do more work on some specific pictures, or if the
pictures need more editing I work with the RAW:s.

For me it is important to keep botf files handy, if I need to send out
100 JPG:s, I will not have the time to wait for 100 pistures to be
prosessed to JPG:s. I have too big archive, and too slow computer, so
I an trying to keep things simple.

This on-demand prosessing will work fine for people who do not need
very meny pictures in JPG form very often.

Re: RAW/Versioning improvement ideas

2006-11-01 Thread Antti Ahonen
I have been wondering about the same thing myself.

The problem with automatically detecting the files (thing #3) might be
proglematic, because if you are shooting both raw and jpg, you will
already have a JPG file with the same name.

Then again it is a version of the same picture as well, so maybe it
would be the right way after all.

The converted Raws would be img_0001-2.jpg and so on.

disk full

2006-10-29 Thread Antti Ahonen
My photos disk is getting full. What is the right way to start a newone?

Is there a way to move my pictures in a way the tags remain the same,
or can I assign the F-spot to move new files I copy to the database to
another disk?

Re: raw file handling

2006-10-29 Thread Antti Ahonen
I am also very eagerly waiting for the raw conversion. While waiting,
is there any possibility to get the f-spot to open raw files in
another solution (like ufraw) like I can open jpg:s in gimp?

Re: Album Support

2006-08-30 Thread Antti Ahonen
Hello. I am a new F-spot user, and a new ubuntu user as well. I do not know anything about coding, and hardly anything about linux, but I do take a lot of pictures and tend to spend a lot of time organizing those.
For me the idea of albums sounds very good, I was wondering could it solve my recourceproble.  I have quite large database of pictures, about 28000 pictures now and at least the same amount still waiting to be uploaded to the database.
My computer is quite old, so it takes a really long time to do anything with the pictures, and the program crashes quite a lot.Could this album thing be done in a way that the program would be dealing with one album at the time, instead of the whole database. Like if I have 28000 pictures, I could have 1 personal pictures, 1 work pictures and 8000 pictures of hobbyes, all in their own albums. So when I am going thought my personal pictures I the program would have to run only 1 pictures database.
For me it would be importtant to have curtain pictures in more than one album, and it would be important to have possibilities to search tags from more than one album at the time.  And I think it would be good to have one kind of temporary album, a place I could drag images temporarily, without actually moving those on the disc, so I could sort them, try some different ways to arrange those, and when I am ready, export those to a folder//webpage/flicker/whatever. That is one feature I would be very happy with.
