The vasanas, being "untied" or like a roasted seed, no longer have the
"curse" of creating new bodies -- that is they no longer remain bound

This does not preclude some higher elements of volition/nature
supporting creation of new "karmic free" bodies.

Dzogchenpas point out that when you exhaust the karma of the human realm, you no longer have to manifest a form in this realm because the interdependent set of causes that keeps your "node" online in the web of mutual interrelation are gone.

And liberation does not destroy this karma. It is a done deal. It is

The text expresses this poetically. "He stood at the pinnacle of human

Does anyone know by what mechanism Rudraksha Mala beads work? Why do
saints wear them? Are they supposed to contain, strengthen and/or
transform our energetic selves somehow?

[FairfieldLife] Re: Loan for TM

2006-01-19 Thread Patrick Gillam
It's been a while since I've done this, but my calculator
is darn smart, so let's see what we get:

Loan: US $2,500
Payment: $50/mo.

Interest rates:
   Prime rate on 19 Jan 06: 7.25%
   Excellent credit: 7.25 + 0.375 = 7.63%
   Good credit: 7.25 + 2 = 9.25%
   Fair credit: 7.25 + 4 = 11.25%

Term and total amount paid, assuming interest compounded monthly:

Excellent credit: 61 months of payments for a total of $3,050
Good credit: 64 months for payments totaling $3,200
Fair credit: 68 months for a total of $3,400

I guess that's one way to keep people meditating
regularly: remind them every month that they learned.

Yeah, the $20 billion was probably spent like this:

$19,999,999,976 split evenly into the Big Six (guesstimating...) oil
company CEOs' bank accounts.
$24 remaining for each of the CEOs to replace one of their car's air
filters...

So, Mr. Wright wanted to make you feel bad and he had the desire to to
act on it and now he wants to pretend it's not the case. So, we are
agreed, Barry is dishonest and hypocritical.

Glad you clarified that because the word "most" bothered me too.
Maybe the loudest have this vengeful attitude, but attributing it to
"most" seems just a bit Pall-ish, if you know what I mean.

Among those who are looking forward to this retribution though, I
wonder how many are men. I'm thinking of a study just done, which
seems to show that "While women showed signs of empathy with people
they both liked and disliked, men appeared to enjoy pain being
inflicted on their foes".

[FairfieldLife] Ex-EPA Chiefs Blame Bush in Global Warming

2006-01-19 Thread a_non_moose_ff
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060118/ap_on_go_ot/global_warming

WASHINGTON - Six former heads of the
Environmental Protection Agency — five Republicans and one Democrat —
accused the Bush administration Wednesday of neglecting global warming
and other environmental problems.

"I don't think there's a commitment in this administration," said Bill
Ruckelshaus, who was EPA's first administrator when the agency opened
its doors in 1970 under President Nixon and headed it again under
President Reagan in the 1980s.

Russell Train, who succeeded Ruckelshaus in the Nixon and Ford
administrations, said slowing the growth of "greenhouse" gases isn't
enough.

"We need leadership, and I don't think we're getting it," he said at
an EPA-sponsored symposium centered around the agency's 35th
anniversary. "To sit back and just push it away and say we'll deal
with it sometime down the road is dishonest to the people and
self-destructive."

All of the former administrators raised their hands when EPA's current
chief, Stephen Johnson, asked whether they believe global warming is a
real problem, and again when he asked if humans bear significant blame.

Agency heads during five Republican administrations, including the
current one, criticized the Bush White House for what they described
as a failure of leadership.

Defending his boss, Johnson said the current administration has spent
$20 billion on research and technology to combat climate change after
President Bush rejected mandatory controls on carbon dioxide, the
chief gas blamed for trapping heat in the atmosphere like a greenhouse.

Bush also kept the United States out of the Kyoto international treaty
to reduce greenhouse gases globally, saying it would harm the U.S.
economy, after many of the accord's terms were negotiated by the
Clinton administration.

"I know from the president on down, he is committed," Johnson said.
"And certainly his charge to me was, and certainly our team has heard
it: 'I want you to accelerate the pace of environmental protection. I
want you to maintain our economic competitiveness.' And I think that's
really what it's all about."

His predecessors disagreed. Lee Thomas, Ruckelshaus's successor in the
Reagan administration, said that "if the United States doesn't deal
with those kinds of issues in a leadership role, they're not going to
get dealt with. So I'm very concerned about this country and this agency."

Bill Reilly, the EPA administrator under the first President Bush,
echoed that assessment.

"The time will come when we will address seriously the problem of
climate change, and this is the agency that's best equipped to
anticipate it," he said.

Christie Whitman, the first of three EPA administrators in the current
Bush administration, said people obviously are having "an enormous
impact" on the earth's warming.

"You'd need to be in a hole somewhere to think that the amount of
change that we have imposed on land, and the way we've handled
deforestation, farming practices, development, and what we're putting
into the air, isn't exacerbating what is probably a natural trend,"
she said. "But this is worse, and it's getting worse."

Carol Browner, who was
President Clinton's EPA administrator, said the White House and the
Congress should push legislation to establish a carbon trading program
based on a 1990 pollution trading program that helped reduce acid rain.

"If we wait for every single scientist who has a thought on the issue
of climate change to agree, we will never do anything," she said. "If
this agency had waited to completely understand the impacts of DDT,
the impacts of lead in our gasoline, there would probably still be DDT
sprayed and lead in our gasoline."

Three former administrators did not attend Wednesday's ceremony:
Mike Leavitt, now secretary of health and human services; Doug Costle,
who was in the Carter administration, and Anne Burford, a Reagan
appointee who died last year.

[FairfieldLife] France defends right to nuclear reply to terrorism

2006-01-19 Thread a_non_moose_ff
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060119/wl_nm/nuclear_arms_france_dc_2

France defends right to nuclear reply to terrorism

By Elizabeth Pineau Thu Jan 19, 9:11 AM ET

BREST, France (Reuters) - France said on Thursday it would be ready to
use nuclear weapons against any state that carried out a terrorist
attack against it, reaffirming the need for its nuclear deterrent.

Deflecting criticism of France's costly nuclear arms program,
President Jacques Chirac said security came at a price and France must
be able to hit back hard at a hostile state's centers of power and its
"capacity to act."

He said there was no change in France's overall policy, which rules
out the use of nuclear weapons in a military conflict. But his speech
pointed to a change of emphasis to underline the growing threat France
perceives from terrorism.

"The leaders of states who would use terrorist means against us, as
well as those who would consider using in one way or another weapons
of mass destruction, must understand that they would lay themselves
open to a firm and adapted response on our part," Chirac said during a
visit to a nuclear submarine base in northwestern France.

"This response could be a conventional one. It could also be of a
different kind."

Chirac, who is commander-in-chief of the armed forces, said all of
France's nuclear forces had been configured with the new strategy in
mind and the number of nuclear warheads on French nuclear submarines
had been reduced to allow targeted strikes.

It was the first time he had so clearly linked the threat of a nuclear
response to a terrorist attack.

Chirac, 73, did not say whether France would be prepared to use
pre-emptive strikes against a country it saw as a threat.

SECURITY TIGHT

France has had nuclear weapons since the 1960s and experts believe it
has some 300 nuclear warheads.

"Against a regional power, our choice would not be between inaction or
annihilation," Chirac said in his first major speech on France's
nuclear arms strategy since 2001.

"The flexibility and reactivity of our strategic forces would enable
us to exercise our response directly against its centers of power and
its capacity to act."

France has tightened security since Islamist suicide bombers killed
more than 50 people in attacks on London transport last July, and
following the Madrid bomb blasts which killed more than 190 people in
March 2004.

Despite its strong opposition to the U.S.-led war in
Iraq, France remains a target for Islamist militants because of its
intelligence links with the United States and Britain.

Last July, national police service chief Michel Gaudin said a radical
Algerian Islamist group, the GSPC, had been in contact with al Qaeda's
leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, about launching attacks in France.

Since the end of the Cold War, questions have been raised about the
usefulness of the nuclear program, which makes up some 10 percent of
the overall defense budget.

Chirac's government is under pressure to cut spending as it struggles
to bring its public deficit below the
European Union's deficit limit of 3 percent of gross domestic product.

"Our country's security and its independence have their price," Chirac
said.

My comment has nothing to do with intentions, but
rather relates a few anecdotes about insiders wielding
power. When they rise to the top, sometimes they
surprise people by acting in ways contrary to the
actions that got them into power in the first place.

Chester A. Arthur was a machine politician who found
himself president when James Garfield was assassinated.
I found the following at

http://www.americanpresident.org/history/chesterccrthur/

"As President, Arthur surprised everyone by acting independently, defying his
state-based
reputation as a slick machine politician who would advance the agenda of his
own party
faction and ignore the needs of the nation at-large. Domestic affairs dominated
his
presidency. In reforming civil service, Arthur supported the Pendleton Act,
which
attempted to counter patronage and cronyism by requiring competitive exams for
government office. Specifically, the law banned salary kickbacks and ensured
that
promotion would be based on merit, not connections. While the Republican Party
usually
worked to protect big business and manufacturing, Arthur pushed for tariff
reduction to
relieve indebted farmers and middle-class consumers. He also vetoed the
notorious pork-
barrel Rivers and Harbors Act of 1882, arguing that the growing surplus of
federal funds
should be decreased by tax reductions rather than government expenditures."

Would other examples be Richard Nixon's opening of China and Ronald Reagan's
detente
with the Soviet Union? I've read they rose to power in part on the strength of
their
credentials as anticommunists, but then they turned around and made nice with
the
communists.

It makes sense for insiders to effect reforms. Who better knows how the system
should
change?

I'm not saying any of Maharishi's successors will change anything. I expect the
hagiographers and money-holders will win the day. Still, I'm open to being
surprised.

[FairfieldLife] Group formed to restore election integrity

2006-01-19 Thread Rick Archer
Title: Group formed to restore election integrity

A group of people in Fairfield, formed by Carole Simmons and Cindy Ballou, recently began an effort to restore voting integrity in Iowa.

They intend to  raise awareness of the issue via articles in newspapers, buttons ("Stop Election Fraud.  Demand paper ballots"), bumper stickers, and public showings of documentaries exposing the reality, ugliness, and impact of vote rigging.  At least as importantly, they will be contacting those at the state and local levels who oversee elections and hopefully influencing them to get paper ballots and election audits throughout the state.

I encourage those of you on this list who care about democracy and who live in Fairfield to consider joining these people and helping out.  If you live elsewhere, please consider joining, or forming, a similar group.  Such groups in other states have already had significant impact changing election laws/procedures much for the better.

If you capture the fort controlling the gold, silver, etc mines, you don't have to fight innumerable lesser battles for all the individual mines.  We have an Iraq war, a govt that lies to us and spies on its own citizens, torture, detention without trial, incompetents appointed to lead govt agencies, and so much more ONLY because past elections were rigged.  If we fix that problem, a whole lot of other problems go away automatically.

If you can, please join a group fighting to make our elections democratic once again.

If in Fairfield and you want to help, contact Carole Simmons via [EMAIL PROTECTED]

She's French. She'd probably understand.

We are talking, after all, about the country in which
the funeral procession for the last leader of the
country (Mitterand) contained his wife and kids walking
side by side with his mistress and kids. Go figure.

But since the chances of the TMO actually raising the
10 trillion bucks are almost as remote as the chances
of them giving it to me, I suspect the whole point
is moot. :-)

Depends on the woman. For example:

Catherine Deneuve is 62.
Natalie Baye is 57.
Isabelle Adjani is 50.
Charlotte Rampling is 60.
Glenn Close is 57.
Helen Mirren is 60.
Meryl Streep is 61.
Sigourney Weaver is 56.
Kim Basinger is 52.
Raquel Welch is 65 (and still looks great).

That's generally my attitude as well. But in these
particular discussions, people were talking about
trying to find a way to give charitable donations
that prevented the *receiving* organization from
abusing the money or falling prey to the many traps
associated with getting large sums of money given
to people who aren't used to handling it. You'll
have to admit that if a few more people had handled
their donations to the TMO as sensibly as these
folks have suggested, that it wouldn't have been
tempted to rip people off the way it clearly has.

We must agree to disagree. In my book, someone who
wanted to remake the TM movement would not do so
by pretending to go along with its current line
of bullshit. If you consider that ethical, I suggest
that it says a lot about your own ethics.

> Sometimes it takes more spine to go along with

There you have it. You are suggesting that it would
be ethical for a person to lie and pretend to be
something that he's not if his intent somewhere
down the road was to "do the right thing," eh?

It's back to the olde "ends justify the means"
issue. You think they do; I think that the means

something ethical by acting unethically, then
one deserves the karmas one gets. Since this

My approach to gifts in general, including charitable contributions to
the TMO (which I've stopped by the way) is to completely let go of the
gift once it is given. Unless it was a large sum of money I was
donating (whihc is a *very* hypothetical instance...) I don't want to

[FairfieldLife] Using the TMO's $10 trillion bond to solve the Social Security conundrum...

2006-01-19 Thread shempmcgurk
$10 trillion is equivalent to about the all pension plans --
individual and group -- in the U.S. combined. Individual plans
include all qualified plans such as IRAs, 401(k)s, etc.

So: the TMO should convince all workers in America to issue "sell"
orders to the brokers holding stocks, bonds, and mutual funds within
qualified (i.e. retirement) plans and buy TMO bonds.

And when the bonds fail, everyone can rely on their Social Security
benefits.

Of course, the alternative would be to leave all the pension and
qualified plans as the are and, instead, privatize Social Security
with the one proviso that workers can ONLY invest their SS funds in
TMO bonds!

That way, the whole SS system will go bankrupt and fail. Then
workers will no longer have to contribute to the horrible SS program
anymore, thus freeing them to invest that money in their own
individual qualified plans

Not if his plan is to remake the movement once
MMY dies.

Sometimes it takes more spine to go along with
something and just absorb the scorn for the sake
of a future goal.

Caveat for the literal-minded: I'm not saying I
think or hope this is what's going on; merely
that we can't rule it out.

On Jan 19, 2006, at 8:37 AM, Peter wrote:Nice find, Vaj, thanks. I would really like to see a copy of the "original" however, just to validate it.Lot's of nice quotes. It is interesting that he considers mastery of kundalini comes at the beginning of the path."In the beginning, the Sadhaka is instructed into the secrets of his own person, and of the indwelling spirit; the meaning and nature of prana, the various plexuses, and the nature and arousal of the Kundalini, and the nature of the Self. Later on, he comes to know of the origin of the five elements, their activity, radiation, and merits and defects. Meanwhile his mind undergoes the process of purification and acquires composure, and this the Sadhaka experiences through the deep-laid subtle center of the Indweller; he also knows how and why it is there, only that the deiform element is kindled. This knowledge transforms him into the pure, eternal, and spiritual form of a SadGuru who is now in a position to initiate others into the secrets of the spirit. The stage of Sadhakahood ends here."(...)"In fact, the pseudo-Saints are caught in a snare of greed, hence what the people get in return is not the blessings of satisfaction, but ashes.    The self-styled man of God, speaking ad nauseum about spiritual matters, thinks himself to be perfect, but others are not so sure. As regards a Saint, on the other hand, men are on the lookout for ways to serve him more and more, but as the ever contented soul, steeped in beatitude, desires nothing, they are left to serve in their own way, which they do with enthusiasm, and they never feel the pressure.    Greatness is always humble, loving, silent and satisfied. Happiness, tolerance, forbearance, composure and other allied qualities must be known by everyone; just as one experiences bodily states such as hunger, thirst, etc., one. must, with equal ease, experience in oneself the characteristics connoted by the word “Saint”. As we know for certain that we need no more sleep, no more food, at a given moment, so too we can be sure of the above characteristics from direct experience. One can then recognize their presence in others with the same ease. This is the test and experience of a tried spiritual leader."

What I've done is corrected some (but by no means all)
of your deliberate misstatements of fact, as you know.
If that makes you feel bad, try telling the truth

For the record, Barry did indeed write what I claimed;
but I didn't claim it was a quote (it was a close
paraphrase, without quote marks), so Barry crammed two
deliberate misrepresentations into one sentence.

> Judy knows most of this, and has been vocal on FFL in condemning
> Tom Pall for his racist remarks and his unconscionable attacks

And yet another deliberate misrepresentation from
Barry. As he knows, I stayed almost completely out
of that flap.

> The only reason she's seeming
> to "side" with him now is that it's a rare opportunity for her to
> attack me.

And a third misrepresentation. I wasn't "siding" with
Tom in any way but rather pointing out Barry's
hypocrisy (hardly a "rare" opportunity, so that's a
*fourth* misrepresentation).

I think there are 2 types left in the inner circle: (1) TBs saturated
with kool-aid, and in some cases with actual mental problems, who
whole heartedly support the craziness now and will after MMY dies, and
(2) more realistic types who are waiting for their chance to raid the
coffers and take over the business side of the TMO after MMY dies.

What I hear is that king tony is a figurehead without any real power,
signatory rights, or line authority in the org. He'll preside over
public events but won't be a mover and shaker.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Brahmachari Mahesh speaks on Guru Dev in 1952

2006-01-19 Thread Premanand Paul Mason
The transcript of the 1952 speech was sourced in India by a friend in
1974, some years prior to the adoption of the 'sidhi' spelling by the
TM-Sidhi techniquers. The other typos were also present in the
transcript.
Whilst re-typing the transcript I inadvertently left out the opening
line of the speech. Both the 'missing line' and adjustments to the
typos are included in the full transcript displayed at the following:-

[FairfieldLife] Giving money away dharmically

Interestingly, the issue of *how* to give money to
spiritual organizations in the "cleanest" possible
way, one that insures the highest benefit for all
concerned, has been discussed recently on another
forum of which I am a member. Here's a compilation
of ideas that came up there for how folks there
felt that charitable donations should be handled.

* Never give money to an organization without
specifying exactly what it is to be spent for
and receiving a written agreement from the
organization that it will be spent for that
purpose and *only* that purpose. Include wording
that spells out what happens if the money is
*not* spent as agreed. (For example, the full
amount has to be returned to the donor.) If the
organization does not agree to this, more often
than not you really don't want to support it.

* Never give money to any organization that does
not agree to do a *public* accounting of every penny
they received for the project you are supporting,
and what each penny was spent on.

* Only give money to pay for goods and services,
not to pay for the lifestyles of people in the
receiving organization. That is, if you are
donating to help teach meditation, specify that
the money has to be spent on renting halls, pay-
ing for advertising or posters, and for giveaway
materials, but *not* to pay the rent for the
teachers themselves, so that they don't have to
work at a "day job." (Almost everyone on the forum
where these suggestions came up has been a teacher
of meditation and self discovery. Almost everyone
on the forum agrees that it is a *bad* idea for
teachers of meditation to be paid for their services. )

* Require the receiving organization to provide
you (the donor) with quarterly reports in which
they detail the progress that has been made on
the project you supported and how the money you
donated has been spent so far. If they balk at
doing this, chances are something is wrong.

* Require the receiving organization to publish
the incomes of *all* personnel who work for it
full-time, including all "perks" that they may
receive in lieu of actual salary. (For instance,
houses and cars provided for free to clergy,
vacations, travel expenses, etc.)

* Require the receiving organization to publish
at least yearly a breakdown of the percentage of
money donated that is actually spent on projects
and not on supporting the organization itself.
For example, if you read the "fine print" in the
United Way brochures (which, sadly, no one does),
you learn that less than 40 cents on every dollar
raised goes to the charities it supports. The rest
goes to salaries for the full-time workers (many
of them six-figure salaries) and to support the
bloated structure of the organization. If more
potential donors *knew* this, they would give their
money -- 100% of it -- directly to the charities
that the United Way claims to support.

Other ideas were equally interesting, in my opinion.
I'm just "crosspollenating" the subject here on FFL
to see how people here -- many of whom have given
money to the TMO and other organizations in the
past or are still doing so -- feel about the subject.

Yeah, right. When Bevans fly. :-)

Actually, there IS one scenario in which I would
rejoin the TM movement. If it succeeded in raising
10 trillion dollars and agreed to give *all* of it
to me, I'd gladly pretend to be part of the TMO
again. It's not like I'd teach TM or attend any
meetings or anything, but I'd agree to pay lip
service to the TMO by keeping my mouth shut and
not criticizing it. Meanwhile, I'd take the money
and give it away to spiritual and charitable
institutions *other* than the TMO. Every penny of
it. The minute the money was gone, I'd be back to
my old nagging, critical self again.

I figure that being able to give 10 trillion bucks
to people and organizations that *really* deserve
it and that might actually do something to change
the world in a positive way would be worth the
sacrifice on my part. Heck, it might even get me
laid...from what I hear around here, if the women
of the TMO thought I had 10 trillion bucks, they'd
be lining up to hop into bed with me. :-)
