Xeno, No. The point is that the universe functions as information in a virtual reality. It also means that Consciousness or the unified field is the main computer (the CPU) that runs this virtual reality. Logic would tell you that this virtual reality or information can't create itself. It has to be created by Somebody, which is Consciousness. As the creator, it is only logical that Consciousness is the source of everything. As such, It has the quality of the Observer, the Process of Observing, and the Observed. Why? Because there is nobody else present. It is the Prime Mover. IOW, It attains the dynamic nature of the unified field, the samhita of the Rishi-Devata-Chandas. Most scientists are still trapped in the objective universe paradigm. 'Unified field' in science is a physical construct. Logic can only process what you know, it doesn't tell you anything unless you plug in values. If a light shines on an object in a dark room, then the object becomes visible, but one has to assume that the light and room and the object already existed, and the fact the light made us see it does not mean the light created the object. Most scientists are still trapped in the objective universe paradigm. That's why they have an adverse reaction to the possibility that the universe is run by a subjective reality, Consciousness or the Unified Field. I do not know why people always say this. Science is the objective universe paradigm. Scientists are not trapped in it. It is the modus operandi of science. A scientist can investigate an autombile crash because the automobile is objective. Now if the automobile crash were subjective, in subjective space, and no physical automobile were present, how would they proceed to investigate the crash? The observer, observed, and process of observing illustration is to give temporary meaning to certain experiences people might have if they are seeking enlightenment. It is in fact also how science works, there is an observer, a scientist or a machine recording data about an event (like the LHC at CERN), there is what is observed, and the process of observations takes place in time from the beginning to the end of the observation. As far a consciousness is concerned it makes experience possible, but whether it is active or passive in that observation is another question. A nervous system seems to be required. And machines make observations and then we, with our consciousness observe what the machines recorded, but we don't know if the machine is conscious. If they are not then an observation might take place and yet that observation would remain forever unknown. The thing about unity as a spiritual phenomenon is consciousness and the physical world are not distinct, they are as distinct as they are in ordinary waking consciousness. It is only on the spiritual path that consciousness and the physical objective world seem to be different from one another. As you are speaking here of M's Hindu philosophy, I again re-quote for you from Vasistha, considered one of the greatest of Indian sages: 'But all this talk about who created this world and how it was created is intended only for the purpose of composing scriptures and expounding them: it is not based on truth... The content is passing by slow or fast, etc. Your awareness is crystal clear and unbounded. This is the case even if you are feeling hungover or foggy or similar. Your mirror-like awareness clearly reflects the fogginess! So how come it takes so long for the whole system to boot up in the morning? Surely if it was just my programming and not the hardware that was buggy, the hardware would be on even if I wasn't powered up? I think the awareness is part of the contents and they swap places if one tries to look at the other. Campbell states that the universe is information in a virtual reality. This information is stated in bits, such as a photon or no photon. He uses the famous double-slit experiment to make his point. For example, The default state of light is its wave nature when it goes through the double slit. This is shown as a diffraction pattern on the screen placed behind the slits. However, when a photon counter is placed at the slits, the diffraction pattern disappears and becomes two bands of light, showing the particle nature of light. He also used another example of this experiment where the data are recorded and stored for several weeks after the experiment. Then, the data pertaining to the photon counts at the slits are erased. So, you would expect that the two bands of light on the screen would remain the same. But NO, the recorded data shows a diffraction pattern showing the wave nature of light, which is its default state. Campbell argues that it isn't the observer that collapsed the wave function. The experiment is amazing, not to mention very creepy, and opened a new world for investigation but it's nothing new. But it is very odd and open to interpretation. The default state of all electromagnetism is particles (Einstein won his Noble prize for proving that) but they travel like waves. This is the mystery and there are ways of describing it that make it sound stranger than it is but at it's heart is the fact that particles can interfere with each other, or with themselves in parallel universes perhaps, that is unusual and counter-intuitive. I don't see where consciousness comes into it, the majority of physicists don't think it critical at all, including the ones who formulated quantum theory. The idea of measurement doesn't require us, the term was meant to mean any interaction that particles have. If it did require us I can't imagine what that would mean for every branch of science we have. I could go on and on and have done in the past but basically what are humans if the world can't exist without us? What could be going on and how did it get here? I do live in a virtual reality programme though, we all do, it's the one created inside our heads by the spongy gubbins buzzing away non-stop. But the Cartesian theatre of conscious perception has no quantum component as the brain is too hot and none of the structures inside are small enough to be capable of quantum events (quantum simply meaning of a certain very small size). I don't think there's any weird extra explanation required for consciousness that goes beyond the one needed to explain how the stuff in my head creates my vision of the world. Do we need particle physics for that? I think the fact that consciousness isn't fully explained gives people a certain leeway with the imagination. Maybe these guys would be better off showing why they think it's actually impossible to account for experience with what we have before they go extrapolating beyond what we currently know.. I don't see how the universe could be considered virtual though, it is what it is. The word means almost or nearly. What does Tom Cambell claim that it just fails to be?
