The main answer on many sites was sell lower priced items that people can afford. It's interesting how many companies went the opposite directly and started raising their prices as if let's harvest the market now and head for the hills. :-D

Interestingly there is another group of businesses that is rarely affected negatively by a recession or depression -- business that cater to people with Too Much Money. In many cases, unless their wealth was all kept in markets that go bust, the rich stay rich during a recession or depression. And they still want their toys. One of the markets that tends to still do well in tough times according to the article I read (and one of our posters here can correct me if the article was wrong) is high-end audio. These days it would include high-end video as well. High-end watches and jewelry continues to sell. And service-oriented businesses that focus on personal service, if you can afford it still tend to do well. According to the same article, certain parts of the entertainment business stay solvent. The worse the recession or depression, the greater the demand for *diversion* in the public there is, so there is still a market for movies and TV and escapist fiction. Quality may go down because of financial constraints, but quantity tends to go up.

There are reports that some of the rich put their money into things that aren't panning out. The crash may well take them down too. I believe the rich will be affected the most. For most people you either are able to hang on to your home or job or you are not. Its a simple equation, then you just move on, adapt, change, and life goes on. But for the rich, they are suddenly panicking about where their money should go. Can't trust anything or anyone with it. So they have to run around like headless-chickens worrying about if their money could get quickly sucked away. Probably gold is the only safe place, or prime real estate, but the latter will only be any good if there is a very strong turn-around in the future. I think a lot of the criminals among the rich, like Dick Cheney, the Bush's and McCain's are just trying to grab as much money as possible as quickly as possible, and by making sure the wars continue to their financial benefit. They need some help and some one to show them how to transpose some of their skills to another field. Thing is we used to have state programs for that but not anymore because the conservatives saw it as government waste. They prefer a sink or swim program. Have you met many homeless people? Yes, I have. Many of them have mental problems, although not all. As such, it will take a very long time to help them. Most have so many problems that talking about the land of opportunity to them would be peculiar. Very true. It is important to know more of themselves and where their opportunities lie. There should be some help for them to take care of their immediate needs. But the people involved should have take the initiative to help themselves. Also, the government can help to a certain extent by providing training and job opportunities for those in need.

That's because it's more efficient to do so. Thing is we used to have state programs for that but not anymore because the conservatives saw it as government waste. They prefer a sink or swim program. At this time we probably have more people than we have jobs for so we need to revisit our attitudes on employment and the total structure of society. In the long run, it is better to create new opportunities in this country rather than try to hold on to jobs that are being done more efficiently through outsourcing. The people affected can either find new jobs for themselves, or create new businesses that are more successful in their geographic areas. Coming soon to a community near you: socialism (and don't blame the left, blame greedy righties). I don't believe socialism is the answer. Why? Because socialism does not reward the efficient and innovative. It tries to constrain all people to an average which create strain to those people who are industrious and for those who are not motivated. As a result, the income taxes are very high in countries like Norway, France or Italy which adopt socialism or forms of its system. On the other, pure capitalism is not the answer either. There should be an economic system that allows the people to take care of their economic needs and their spiritual well being.

There's a reason why some jobs are being outsourced to other countries. That's because it's more efficient to do so. No it isn't. It's just cheaper to do so. Our standard of living is too high. If it didn't cost so much to live here we'd be cheaper too. In my field a bunch of fools tried to outsource and got back crap. It was for video games and the foreigners didn't understand the culture. Companies pulled stuff back in. Look deeper at your jyotish charts and you'll find why some people are flummoxed when it comes to taking the initiative. Not everyone is highly driven, we'd all be pitta types wouldn't we if that was so? Thing is we used to have state programs for that but not anymore because the conservatives saw it as government waste. They prefer a sink or swim program. People don't get much help these days in the times of crisis. It may be easy for you to say but if you're time comes we'll see. You hit that set of bad transits and dashas and everything can go belly-up. ;-) Coming soon to a community near you: socialism (and don't blame the left, blame greedy righties). I don't believe socialism is the answer. Why? Because socialism does not reward the efficient and innovative. It tries to constrain all people to an average which create strain to those people who are industrious and for those who are not motivated. Most likely the majority would be happy in a socialist environment. Only the highly individualistic would be unhappy. But it is inefficient for a government to have a bunch of small businesses. For the independent type let them run a small business but limit the size. Best of both worlds. As a result, the income taxes are very high in countries like Norway, France or Italy which adopt socialism or forms of its system. And the citizens get more back from their taxes, unlike US citizens who are getting theirs burned up over in the Middle East. On the other, pure capitalism is not the answer either. There should be an economic system that allows the people to take care of their economic needs and their spiritual well being. Just gave you the model: socialism for things that are in the commons and limited capitalism where applicable. Just don't give any one individual or group too much power. But that's what we're supposed to have in the US or what the founding fathers envisioned.

Europeans do not immigrate to the other countries in Europe, they are not counted. If a German moves to England or visa versa it is not counted because in Europe you can work in any country without immigration papers. So the statistics are completely wrong if you talk about countries. Europe as a whole is probably higher than US, and Scotland is higher per capita than US. OffWorld IMO, the work schedule in the US at typically 40 hours per week is hard work for most people in the world. Many of the people in the world, particularly the underdeveloped countries, don't even have any jobs and are unemployed. As such, the standard of living is fairly low compared to the developed countries. If you talk to a recent immigrant who is working here in the US, he will tell you that he did not expect work life here would be so difficult. But since he is making more money than the old country, he is contented to stay here until he earns enough money to go home, or retire in this country or elsewhere.
