Re: Tater Tot
Julie, I was so sorry to hear of his passing, but as we know he is still with you in spirit...And when you least expect it, there will be a tug on those apron strings...you will know he will always be with you. I know it is a very difficult time, but we do know they will all be waiting for us at the bridge... You are in our thoughts and prayers. Take care, Kerry R. and Bandy__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Bandy's trip to the specialist
Just an update on what we have been doing for Bandy. His temp still jumps up every 3 or 4 days...all the way to 106...so we went to a specialist to have everything checked.. This is what they did and what they have found so far.. CBC in house was done and one was sent out to another lab Biochemistry: Feline comprehensive pending Urinalysis: showed trace glucose in urine Specific gravity 1.020 FeLv and FIV ELISA were both positive Bone marrow IFA for FeLV pending Bone marrow IFA for FIV pending Bone marrow aspirate cytology pending Chest x-ray normal Abdominal Ultrasound: no masses or nodules seen, Spleen, gall bladder, liver, urinary bladder, bowel, stomach, and pancreas are all normal.. Kidneys are thickened and surface texture is irregular. They are symmetrical in size...Both have thickened and hyperechoic cortexes with fusion and blunting of the renal papillae.. There was no evidence of free fluid in the abdomen.. I think the concern here is of the kidneys being irregular, but they are working properly now.. Hemobartonella PCR pending ( to see if this is a contributing factor to his fever) She saved some serum samples for ongoing testing if necessary... I think we just about covered it all in one visit...since it was a very long trip for him to make..Actually, I think he did better than I did...He was a real trooper and did great...He even ate alittle bit on the way home and first thing he did when we got home instead of the litter box, it was the food and water bowl... Anyway, I will post the results as I get them... I think it is still a mystery to my vet here at home as well as the specialist...She was searching for cancer cells and enlarged lymph nodes and there were none...That is a positve thing, so all we can hope for is that the IFA tests are negative...I am going to keep hoping and praying that they are Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your kitties!! Special needs list
How do I add Bandy to the special needs list? We are searching to try to find the cause of his recurring fever..and hoping and praying he is negative on the IFA for FeLV and FIV.. Thank you so much, Kerry and Bandy Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page

Thank you. They are very inexpensive too. I think my 4 ran less than $4.00. - Original Message - From: Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2005 6:36 PM Subject: Re: FW: CLS - Please add Twiggy to the Special Needs list Joan, Tell your friend to try lunch meat, sour cream, plain yogurt, anything to get her to eat on her own. Sometimes a few drops of salmon oil on top will help them smell their food and encourage them to eat. Warming the food sometimes helps. Usually when they are off their food, offering them something pureed or liquid that they can lap rather than chew is better. Try following Twiggy around on hands and knees offering the food over and over. Sometimes if you offer food after a mouthful of syringed, they start eating on their own. Sometimes petting them calmly helps. My Gypsy will sometimes take food from a bowl, but not a dish and visa-versa. Please let your friend know we are pulling for little Twiggy. Patti, I'm so sorry to hear about sweet little Ellen, how absolutely horrible that these sweet little babies all perished because of the unthinking, uncaring actions of a would be rescuer. I'm praying for her 50 cats at home and for any more kitties that have the unfortune of ending up in a transport she is involved with. It may be a good idea to post the facts about the transport to any lists you belong to so anyone thinking of using her as one of their resources in the future can be aware of the horrible outcome of this run. Just state the facts clearly and unbaisedly as you know them so you can't be accused of slandering her. Anyone considering her services in the future should know that they may want to think twice about it. My deepest sympathies for all the heartache you have recently gone through, it certainly is a test of your strength, but please think about throwing in the towel. I'd hate to see the lady who so callously disregarded the lives of the animals in her care be the reason someone as wonderful and caring as you can no longer help those sweet innocents. RE: CLS
What a terrible story and what a wonderful thing you have done for these little guys. There do seem to be a lot of unscrupulous or ignorant people out there doing rescueI admire anyone who does rescue responsibly and carefully but have no sympathy for those who start out without knowing what theyre doing It sounds like this woman defines rescue as saving from the shelter but has no clue as to what to do thenshe maybe sounds like a hoarder? Perhaps you should post your story on some of the rescue group sites as well as here so that an alert can go out about her. Unfortunately, with her willingness to step in at critical times, her 50 cats will jump to hundreds in a very small period of time. She just gave up late yesterday, and all I could do was hold her in my arms thru the night, whispering reassurances to her that although all 1.3 lbs. of her put up such a brave, determined effort to fight, it was okay for her to go to sleep and join the other fur-angels. She had earned her wings. She passed, quietly in my arms during the early morning hours. I am completelydevastated with losing her. Such a sweet, tiny little baby, but she's struggled so hard to stay alive. She tried so hard, she had a determined spirit for such a frail baby. But she was just so small, so innocent. She just didn't have the strength to fight anymore, and it was heartbreaking to look in her eyes realize she'd just given up. For the short time she was with me, she definitely stole a big piece of my heart... What a cruel fate, such an awful death, for her all the others that died senselessly because of the irresponsibility of her supposed rescuer. Yes, they were spared the horror of the gas chamber, but for all these innocents to die such a horrible death due to the transport from hell, I wonder which fate would have been the lesser of the two evils... The heartbreak of all this is also NOT knowing how many other innocents died from exposure to the still UNKNOWN KILLER of the transported cats, all due to the failure of the person doing the transport to be upfront honest with all of us involved. And also how many cats are STILL at risk because the while truth hasn't been told??? Also, her sheer DISREGARD for the lives of these babies by basically just cramming the 20+ cats into a small vehicle, UNVETTED WITH NO PAPERWORK from the shelter, mixing litters, crammed into carriers the cardboard temporary carriers, like sardines, without food, water or even a damn litterbox for the long ride , non-stop, from Georgia to Pa., on one of the hottest, most humid days, then to Ohio, then to N.Y., then finally back to HER home in Pa.(a 2 bedroom townhouse, in which she already is housing 50 (Yes, FIFTY!!!), of her own cats AND, as if things couldn't be any worse, this was her SECOND large transport from the SAME SHELTER in a two week period!! How in the hell could this be allowed to happen??? This woman is NOT A RESCUER, BUT A MURDEROUS COLLECTOR!!! I apologize for my harshness, I am NOT an evil person But I am over-ridden with grief guilt. If I had been able to think that afternoon, I should have called The Adams Co. SPCA to the scene, but I justdid not have my wits together..Regrets, I am having a VERY difficult time DEALING w/ the reality gravity of the horror! The SENSELESS loss of so many lives, the unknown number of other innocents that are now in danger. Right now, I would like to put this woman in the trunk of a small car on a hot, humid day, drive 600-700 miles, and then toss her in a gas chamber... I do not mean to offend anyone on this list. God knows, I love you all and you all have been such a wonderful, supportive, compassionate group of people, no doubt this list has always been my favorite due to the fact of the closeness support. So, please forgive me, but I NEEDED TO VENT!!! I am totally heartbroken and have lost faith in what RESCUE is supposed to be about... I always believed it meant saving the innocents, NOT killing them. After this, I think it's time I just throw in the towel. My heart is broken, to the point I am saying hateful things. It's time to quit. Patti

Re: CLS
Oh My God...What a horrible thing to do to these poor defenseless babies who have already been through so much. Sweet little Ellen is safe now, but what terrible fate waits for the ones in her care.
Please add Butternut to the CLS
Yesterday I lost Butternut to this evil disease. He was 3 1/2 years old - so I know he has lived longer than most babies born positive - but is wasn't long enough. It never is, is it. I am in Arkansas and over 3 years ago there was a situation in the northern part of the state - out in the sticks somewhere - where lots of cats were left at a trailer park of some sort. It was in the news that a vet had been hired to euthanize them all. 2 members of our rescue group headed up there to see what could be done -- all they managed to save was one little orange tabby boy, Butternut, who tested positive for feleuk. Since I already had feleuk babies, including Gloria's Mittens and my Leader and their littermates, who were the same age as Butternut, I took him. He has been wonderfully healthy and happy and very much loved for the whole of his short life. Over the last couple of days he went downhill fast and yesterday lost the use of his hind legs. We chose to free him before he began to really suffer. I know he is playing at the Rainbow Bridge with Mittens and the rest of our feleuk babies. Thanks.

Re: Please add Butternut to the CLS
Oh Susan, I'm so sorry about Butternut. What a story. Such a special boy! What a miracle that he found his way to you! I wish I could be there to hold your hand and try and comfort you. His time was too short, but filled with love and belonging. What a wonderful gift to have given each other. Such a terrible loss. My felv babies were born with it too. I know the fear of living with the knowledge that any day could be the day they take a downturn they won't recover from. At 3 1/2 years old, and wonderfully healthy and happy all that time, you must have been hoping that somehow he had escaped the fate of so many others. I know MC says we should never say I know how you feel, but I truly believe I do. There are 3 remaining kittens from my litter of 6 bottle babies still with us, (they're now approaching 2 yrs). Two of them are, like Butternut, perfectly healthy and happy. Gracie, as you may remember from my posts, has been sick off and on again since she was about 5 mos old. I do know what it's like to live with the dread and the optimism they inspire. It makes no difference that they live longer than expected. It hurts like hell to lose them. Keep your heart and mind open to the signs that Butternut is still with you. Watch your other kitties for behaviors that you would only have expected from him. It's comforting to know they are still with us in spirit, but so very hard to adjust to the absence of their physical presence. Give yourself time and the permission to grieve. You did right by him all his young life. From the moment you heard about him, until the moment you released him from the suffering that he would have endured had you not. You loved him fully and he returned your love. Bless you for being such a good mom. Nina Susan Loesch wrote: Yesterday I lost Butternut to this evil disease. Dear Kerry, What a comprehensive checkup! I hope the reason for Bandy's temp rise can be found and I have you both in my prayers. I'm especially sending "negative" thoughts his way. Re: CLS
Dear Patti, My heart goes out to you, not only for the loss of dear little Ellen, but for the horror of all you are dealing with. Please take care of yourself and know that we're here for you. I hope Ellen is with Tater Tot and Butternut; all lounging on a jumbo, fluffy cloud. Sending you a huge hug. Love, Julie[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Belinda, Regretfully, will you add dear, sweet, little Ellen to the CLS as deceased. 8/24/05. She just "gave up" late yesterday, and all I could do was hold her in my arms thru the night, whispering reassurances to her that although all 1.3 lbs. of her put up such a brave, determined effort to "fight", it was okay for her to go to sleep and join the other fur-angels. She had earned her "wings". What a cruel fate, such an awful death, for her all the others that died senselessly because of the irresponsibility of her "supposed" rescuer. Yes, they were "spared" the horror of the gas chamber, but for all these innocents to die such a "horrible" death due to the "transport from hell", I wonder which fate would have been the lesser of the two evils... The heartbreak of all this is also NOT knowing how many other innocents died from exposure to the still "UNKNOWN KILLER" of the transported cats, all due to the failure of the person doing the transport to be upfront honest with all of us involved. And also how many cats are STILL at risk because the while truth hasn't been told??? Also, her sheer DISREGARD for the lives of these babies by basically just cramming the 20+ cats into a small vehicle, UNVETTED WITH NO PAPERWORK from the shelter, mixing litters, crammed into carriers the cardboard "temporary" carriers, like sardines, without food, water or even a damn litterbox for the long ride , non-stop, from Georgia to Pa., on one of the hottest, most humid days, then to Ohio, then to N.Y., then finally back to HER home in Pa.(a 2 bedroom townhouse, in which she already is housing 50 (Yes, FIFTY!!!), of her own cats AND, as if things couldn't be any worse, this was her SECOND large transport from the SAME SHELTER in a two week period!! SPCA to the scene, but I justdid not have my "wits" together..Regrets, I am having a VERY difficult time DEALING w/ the reality gravity of the horror! The SENSELESS loss of so many lives, the unknown number of other innocents that are now in danger. Right now, I would like to put this woman in the trunk of a small car on a hot, humid day, drive 600-700 miles, and then "toss" her in a gas chamber... I do not mean to offend anyone on this list. God knows, I love you all and you all have been such a wonderful, supportive, compassionate group of people, no doubt this list has always been my favorite due to the fact of the "closeness" support. So, please forgive me, but I NEEDED TO VENT!!! I am totally heartbroken and have lost faith in what RESCUE is supposed to be about... I always believed it meant "saving" the innocents, NOT killing them. After this, I think it's time I just throw in the towel. My heart is broken, to the point I am saying hateful things. It's time to quit. Patti "I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man. Thank you, Nina - what comforting words. I hope your Gracie's health will improve and then remain good permanently. Right now I have 8 feleuk babies - babies, to me, being from Cheyenne who is 6 months old and Daisy who is 8 months old to Valley who is around 5! I'm praying for her 50 cats at home and for any more kitties that have the unfortune of ending up in a transport she is involved with.It may be a good idea to post the facts about the transport to any lists you belong to so anyone thinking of using her as one of their resources in the future can be aware of the horrible outcome of this run. Just state the facts clearly and unbaisedly as you know them so you can't be accused of slandering her. Anyone considering her services in the future should know that they may want to think twice about it.My deepest sympathies for all the heartache you have recently gone through, it certainly is a test of your strength, but please think about throwing in the towel. I'd hate to see the lady who so callously disregarded the lives of the animals in her care be the reason someone as wonderful and caring as you can no longer help those sweet innocents. She isn't worth all those lives that would not in the future be saved by you :)-- BelindaHappiness is being owned by cats ...Be-Mi-Kitties ...http://www.bemikitties.comPost Adoptable FeLV/FIV/FIP Cats/Kittenshttp://adopt.bemikitties.comFeLV Candle Light Servicehttp://www.bemikitties.com/clsHostDesign4U.com (affordable hosting web design)http://HostDesign4U.com---BMK Designs (non-profit web sites)http://bmk.bemikitties.com

Another source of grants for medical treatment
I just learned of another organization that grants money to help animals in need of life-saving medical treatment. They help rescue groups with individual cases and also low-income individuals. It's called the LifeLine program and is run by United Animal Nations. In 2004, they provided more than $15,300 to 25 cats, 47 dogs, one horse and one ferret. There is info about it at www.uan.org. I'm so sorry to hear about sweet Butternut passing. I have a real fondness for orange kitties (my Moogie was orange), and his name is just AWESOME! I've heard of lots of Pumpkins, but he is the first Butternut I ever knew. I guess that just goes to show, there's more than one gourd on the list of possible orange kitty names!
