That is really what I would LOVE to know. Sammie is very healthy and I
almost died when he tested positive. I'm trying everything I can to
keep his immune system as healthy as I can. I don't know much about
cats - he is my first and was a stray. I am now looking into BLUE SEAL
FOOD with Belinda told me about and someone told me about AC-11.

Thank you so much for writing.

and my friend KatieKalico is about 12 now, and still going strong--still
positive, and the other cats in her house are still negative (they are
ALL vaccinated, including Katie)

i'm really starting to wonder how many positives--even true positives,
not just those who test positive once on an ELISSA and are never
retested--actually get sick? it might be a very small number, but no
one's ever looked into it since FeLVs are easier to just kill.

All I can do is give you my stats.

6 positives in the house; 3 died before they were 1; 2 thriving at age 2, 1
thriving at age 1.
2 positives in the dumpster colony I TNR'd; both still thriving at age 2.

Sissy, one of my house 2 y/o, has always had swollen lymph glands. Rocket, her
sister, does not have any symptoms.

From what I have read here, it seems some kitties are just genetically better
able to cope with the disease. Maybe they have stronger immune systems.
Since all of mine come from the same dumpster colony I do not expect any of
them to see 20. I am happy for each good day we have.

I've lost cats to CRF, heart disease and a dog attack in addition to FeLV. I
learned to treasure each day we have together. Worrying about the future
doesn't help me or the cats.

Hug your kitty for me

[Felvtalk] Thank you from Bella's Family

2009-07-16 Thread Orth, Sarai
Thank you all for your loving posts. I didn't know how much I needed the
support until I got it! It seems that so many people have not had a
special relationship with a pet where they can relate to the hole that
their passing leaves and that has been frustrating to me. This week is a
better week as we are starting to be able to think lovingly about her
and laugh about funny things she did! We miss her still and plan to make
a beautiful garden for her over her gravesite. I am looking forward to
planning out something lovely to honor her. I will take your words of
wisdom and just keep loving the other baby like there is no tomorrow! He
is spoiled rotten these days...he even sleeps in our bed now (which my
husband never would have allowed before J) We hope that he stays symptom
free for many years as we hear CAN happen. Thank you again for your kind
words and if anyone else has any advice on preventative measures- always
feel free to post!

Peace to you. A suggestion since you are learning to heal: Start a
chronicle of your little one(s). Write in it daily. I've done that
with Copper and Thomas and frequently look back at the notes. Every
time I do, I laugh and love these little guys even more. I sent
emails to some friends about Dixie, who left this world all too some
because of this disease, and they are comforting. The chronicles
evolved from her emails.

I rescued an FeLV cat and after weeks and weeks of searching for a sanctuary I
found two that can take him in. Home for Life and 'Not So' Purrrfect Angels in
Fresno (CA) are the two places I found. The issue with Home for Life is that is
too far from CA and I can't take him there personally. Therefore, I would like
to speak to someone who personally know the place. I need to know if HFL is a
good place for my FeLV kitty.
Purrrfect Angels is only a 3 hour drive from L.A. but the FeLV room is very
small. It can only house 6 cats. Right now they have two. With my cat it will
be three.

sanctuary I found two that can take him in. Home for Life and 'Not
So' Purrrfect Angels in Fresno (CA) are the two places I found. The
issue with Home for Life is that is too far from CA and I can't take
him there personally. Therefore, I would like to speak to someone
who personally know the place. I need to know if HFL is a good place
for my FeLV kitty.
Purrrfect Angels is only a 3 hour drive from L.A. but the FeLV room
is very small. It can only house 6 cats. Right now they have two.
With my cat it will be three.

Reyna,

Are you surrendering a cat to Home for Life?

I assumed you knew about them from personal experience because you
mentioned in an

e-mail that you knew the place personally.

Maybe is too much to ask but can I have the e-mail of the people you
know that have taken cats to HFL? I want to speak to someone that
personally knows Home for Life.

[Felvtalk] Hepatitis in cats

2009-07-16 Thread Heather
Has anyone had experience with hepatitis? I do not yet know which kind,
and don't know that they do..FNA determined it was hepatitis but I am third
party on this kitty (long story and was involved in her rescue but she was
adopted out by someone at my vet and now is very sick) so don't have much
info, I know they did a culture but are awaiting results. She's having days
where she's looking better and also really bad days and my friend is
thinking of letting her go as she doesn't want to make her suffer through
endless treatment (and she is experienced with treating hepatic lipidosis
and such).

I've read about bacterial hepatitis and triaditis where they have
hepatitis/pancreaitis/IBD and don't know if she falls into one of these
categories. I do know she is vommiting bile.

This is a dear kitty who is not very old. She was dumped at my vet's
office door pregnant and tested a light FIV+. They couldn't find a home
and were going to euthanize her so I took over her charges and boarded her
but also couldn't find a home despite the fact she then tested negative
including on the Western Blot test. She was doing well in her home and
last seen at my vet about 6 months ago and now very sick, very jaundiced.
At first her renal numbers glucose were also elevated but those have
normalized I believe and they do not feel she is diabetic. It seems the
adopter got a new roommate with another cat and a dog and wasn't paying
attention to her...at all, it is very sad. Skittles is a sweet, beautiful
dilute torti and probably only 3 or so years old.

If anyone has suggestions for questions to ask please let me know, and keep
her in your prayers.

Thank you! I apologize for the patchiness of this message but I am
overwhelmed with cat issues/colonies and up late but definitely not of full
capacity here, and, not well informed on her case and BW. I will try to
find out more specifics. The tech who is charged with her care pretty much
saved 13 year old HL kitty with a multitude of problems who, along with his
sister, witnessed their young dad die of a heart attack and were home mostly
alone for weeks. Both had a host of health problems and she nursed him
back to health, so, if she is considering Skittles might be too bad
offit is very worrisome.
