I was told to always have a cat checked if pupils are uneven. I believe it
is indicative of a neurological problem.

Re: [Felvtalk] Santuary

2009-08-14 Thread Susan Hoffman
I'm lucky that I'm in the San Francisco/Bay Area. We have had low cost
spay/neuter and feral cat programs for well over a decade so we don't have the
kitten glut so many other places have. As a result, adoptions tend to be
pretty strong around here. Can't imagine doing adoptions in West Virginia.

Re: [Felvtalk] Difficult decision

2009-08-14 Thread MaryChristine
oh, yes, i've had that happen, too!

"tell me when it's time for me to help you" she meows, this a cat who
maybe meowed a dozen times in her entire life--so i get her into the
carrier, tears streaming down my face, lock myself out, have to break into
the house to get the car keys, take her to the vet's--where she promptly
starts acting like there's nothing whatsoever wrong with her (she had a
squamous-cell carcimona on her tiny little jaw--it had burst that morning,
she couldn't eat, it was inoperable, this was NOT a questionable
decision)--did i mention this was FirstCalico??

sometimes i think that they have that brief flash of kitten, to remind us
both of what was--to temper the sadness with the memory of the joy.

whatever, it was HORRIBLE! (36 hours after she passed, i looked up and
"saw" her walking in from the kitchen, saying, "hi, mom, i feel SO much
better now, can i have my body back now?" i had to explain that it didn't
work that way.

I run a rescue too. I bought a 2,000 sq foot building in an
older section of town and made it into a cageless no kill shelter.
There are 28 cats there, and they have cat trees, second hand
furniture, and all the comforts of home. I also have a large FelV
room. It's a lot of work and expense, but it's my calling in life.

However I seem to accumulate more cats than I adopt. Everyone
in our small town seems to have a reason they can't adopt or foster!

Re: [Felvtalk] Difficult decision

2009-08-14 Thread POTT, BEVERLY
Yes, my vet gives me the ace whenever it's "that time"...

Before, I have had a few who would really perk up on the way to the
vet's office, as if to say, "I'm not sick, look at me! I can run circles
around you!" And THAT makes it really hard! My cat Benjamin (FeLeuk+)
had been going slowly downhill for a couple of years (we think he was
about 17 at the end)- and it had gotten to the point where he couldn't
make it to the litter box anymore and was very weak. So we cried and
drove down to the vet's office, and he started acting like a kitten
again. We turned around and brought him back home, where he scampered
all over the house, played with toys, had an appetite again, etc.
Several days later, though, he was "back where he started", and we took
him to the vet's again. Again he perked up in the car, but we knew it
was time. :-( That was really hard.

Yes, watching them struggle or gasp for breath is just unbearable.
I've used Klonopin to ease the fear or struggle when a cat is dying.
It really helps and it is used for cats because I checked with my
vet. It's like Valium. Have any of you used this for dying cats?
I have a prescription for myself, so I always have it on hand. Ace
promazine would have to be gotten from a vet wouldn't it??

We all hope our furry ones will died peacefully at home, preferably
in their sleep, but as you said, it seldom happens that way. Same for
people. We all hope to die peacefully at home.

Subject: [Felvtalk] RIP Mattie 7/09 - 8/09

I had to make that last vet trip with my dear sweet Mattie today. She
lost the use of her back legs last week due to neurological issues from
the FeLV. The paralysis spread and she had lost bladder and bowel
control. She was still eating and grooming herself but I couldn't wait
until she was suffering. She deserved better than that. She fell
asleep in my arms from the sedative and never felt the 2nd shot.

Even though blind since birth she was the most inquisitive kitten I've
ever had. No challenge was too great for her. She is the last of a
litter of 4 positive babies I rescued last summer. What amazes me is
that their mom and 3 aunts, all positives and now spayed, are still
doing fine.

All I can say is Mattie had a wonderful 12 months wanting for nothing
and teaching me so much. I learned not to let a handicap limit me. It
sure didn't limit her love of life. She is now at the Rainbow Bridge
with Bright Eyes, Houdini, and CJ.

[Felvtalk] neurological problems?

2009-08-14 Thread TANYA NOE
Hello everyone,
I am having some trouble with my FELV+ Maggie. She is just over a year
old. Here's my problem: she is very aggressive sometimes. She will retaliate if
you scold her or squirt her or even raise your voice to her. She will cock her
head side to side and twitch, then she starts a weird meowing (she doesn't talk
much, never has). She will jump on you and bite and rabbit punch you with her
hind legs. Sometimes she will even stalk you down the hall and try to get your
Achilles tendon if you don't wait her out. She seems to be getting worse to
instead of better.
She is also getting more aggressive with our 13 year old cat Sasha. In the
beginning she followed Sasha around and seemed obsessed with her but she wasn't
mean. Now she jumps on her and bites on her throat. Sasha has always avoided
Maggie. She has never picked on her little sister. I think he senses that
Maggie is sick and thus avoids contact. A lot of the time she will walk around
now and meow very loudly and oddly. I thought she was bug chasing but most of
the time I can't figure out what she is vocalizing about. She does this at
night a lot.
My husband and I are worried because she seems to keep getting more and
more unpredictable and he is worried that she is going to hurt our 10 month old
son. I spoke with some of the doctors where I work but none of them really have
much FELV or aggression experience. My husband was wondering if it could be
from the FELV. Does anyone know what neurologic signs would be? We are not sure
what to do. I love her but can't have her hurt me and my family either. She can
be such a sweet cat. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Tanya

Re: [Felvtalk] RIP Mattie 7/09 - 8/09

2009-08-14 Thread Heather
Sharyl, I'm sorry for your loss of Mattie--what a special little girl she
was, I'm always thankful to hear of FELV kittens who do get the chance to
live out their lives, however short they may be.

This story reminded me of my first FELV encounter, moved to a new office to
find an injured double-positive Mama kitty and her babies.Much like
Mattie's family, Mom--albeit double-positive--has outlived all of her
babies. Hobbs, Sissy, Mickey and Sebastian were beautiful, sweet kitties
who won't be forgotten and hopefully are playing with Mattie, CJ, Bright
Eyes & Houdini.

I think when they are born with with as opposed to being affected as an
adult they just usually have much shorter life spans. Knowing love & good
care in that time is what matters.

Bless you for taking care of them,

Heather in Tampa
