Please DO NOT WORRY - if she or husband are FIV+, the kittens will be
just fine!

Your vet knows NOTHING about FIV! It's a lot different than FeLV

I can guarantee that they will be fine.

DO NOT ABORT THIS LATE - each baby has to be taken out and killed!

I don't have time to write now, but I can e-mail you personally later, if
that's OK!

I have had dozens of FIV mothers whose babies were ALL fine!

There is NO WAY these kittens need to be aborted if it is FIV - not
even if he was FeLV+ ! Way too late to do it safely for momma and
each kitten would have to be killed individually. This vet has some
very questionable ideas They should be find, momma should be
fine. Get her 'fixed' after the kittens are weaned.

FIV is a non-issue and there is no guarantee that either the Mom or babies
contracted FIV from the male. We had two outside ferals and the male had FIV,
the female was pregnant when we caught her and had her fixed, she tested
negative and after living outside with Charlie for a year (he went missing this
past summer and we brought SuzieQ inside), she tested negative when we brought
her inside. Besides, even cats WITH FIV live a long and healthy life and the
chances of giving it to another cat (if they are all fixed) is very slim. FIV
is INFECTIOUS, not contagious, big big difference. You don't catch HIV from
living with someone with HIV, only through blood and bodily fluids, same thing
with FIV.

Re: [Felvtalk] pleasehelp

2011-10-03 Thread Natalie
In the past 19 years of cat rescue, I must have taken care of at least one
FIV+ mother each year, if not more!

Some mothers were so far along with their illness, with the stress of being
pregnant, giving birth, trying to provide for kittens, that they soon died
after nursing them. Others stayed with me forever, some were adopted, lived
a long and happy, healthy life. Kittens were spot-checked only, because all
kittens born to FIV+ mothers would show to be somewhat positive (a small
blue dot on the large area that would turn blue for an adult positive cat).
As their immune systems develop, they shed it completely! For some kittens
it can take a month, to some a little longer - not a single kitten, EVER,
was FIV+. There's also no indication that your cat mother cat is positive -
was she tested, and when? If she were tested too soon after exposure, she
would be negative, but that doesn't mean that sometime in the future, she
wouldn't be positive. It all depends on the timing. Just make sure that she
gets plenty of good quality food, good supplements, especially now and while
nursing kittens. I find that pregnant cats can eat about 2-3 cans a day, and
that increases to 4 cans a day when they are nursing.

I cannot believe your vet FIV has been around for so long, it's
inexcusable that there's so much misinformation.

In NY City, they just killed 3 5-week old kittens that tested positive for
FIV - who are these people?

Re: [Felvtalk] pleasehelp

2011-10-03 Thread Christiane Biagi
The decision is not an easy one. She is just about due to deliver and you
need to consider the risk to her, as well as kittens, of an abortion at this
stage. But you should know a few things about FIV:

. The male cat would not likely have given her FIV when he got her
pregnant-deep bite wounds are the most common form of transmission

. Even if your cat was FIV positive, she would not pass it on to her
kittens. Virus does not cross placenta barrier

. However, kittens born to an FIV pos mom oftentimes test positive
for FIV. They get their mom's antibodies and since test used relies on
presence of antibodies, they'll show as positive. NO new kittens can ever
have FIV but it may be many months before their mom's antibodies leave their
system and during those months they'll test positive

. Cats who are vaccinated for FIV always test positive (again
because test looks for antibodies)-not a particularly effective vaccine
the risk of the cat being mislabeled as FIV pos is too great

Please DO NOT WORRY – if she or “husband” are FIV+, the kittens will be
 just fine!
Your vet knows NOTHING about FIV! It’s a lot different than FeLV
I can guarantee that they will be fine.
DO NOT ABORT THIS LATE – each baby has to be taken out and killed!
I don’t have time to write now, but I can e-mail you personally later, if
 that’s OK!
I have had dozens of FIV mothers whose babies were ALL fine!

  Hi
i have just found out tht my cat is pregnant 8.5wks to a stray that tested
 positive for feline aids
i was due to have her fixed but was a little to late as she is 8mths now.
The vet wants me to take her in to get an abortion is this the only way???
Do i have no other options? Is this the best thing to do??
