Hi Claire,

This is a great group. I'm a member of 5 cat yahoo groups and this one is
my favorite. I get daily e-mails, and I can delete them or reply to them if
I have something to comment on. Some people get a daily digest. We discuss
all sorts of things and the medical stuff is what is most interesting to me.
Bring up a subject of interest to you, or ask a question, and watch for all
the replies you'll get.

yes, i was going to suggest that people check into this--AND even ask your
vet, about having them get you a flat of 25 vaccines for you to administer
yourself. to fully protect them, you need to do the initial dose and then a
second in two to three weeks. from there, theoretically, annual shots are
required. whether or not that's actually the case is up for debate, as
immunity should be immunity--with the relatively low infection rate in
healthy adults cats, i seriously question whether or not the annual boosters
are needed. but i'm a heretic, as you all know.

with healthy, negative cats, despite what "they" would have predicted.

Re: [Felvtalk] Felvtalk - freezing interferon

2009-06-10 Thread Patricia . A . Elkins
Interferon is a protein. It is dried into a powder which should be able
to be frozen with
no problem. But when proteins are dissolved into a liquid solution,
freezing can be tricky.
As a scientist working with a variety of proteins, I can tell you that
many proteins will start
to break down if frozen more than once. And rapid freezing is preferable
to slow freezing.
At home, the closest thing to rapid freezing could be done by putting the
protein tube into ice in the back of
the freezer lowering
the temp more rapidly than if you just stick it on the shelf in the
freezer. Proteins also generally
survive freezing better if they are more dilute and freezing in smaller
portions will allow the
freezing to go faster than freezing in big portions.

If a protein is degraded by freezing, it's structure starts to unwind.
Some molecules of the
protein in the solution may degrade and others won't so you may still see
that the protein has
some activity or it may lose all activity. You might see some precipitate
in the solution (always
a bad sign) or you might not. Without some kind of activity readout, it
seems impossible
to me to know whether freezing is causing a problem.

In summary, I would make up the solution to the appropriate dilution and
freeze it in the smallest
portions that will work (need appropriate sized containers) in the coldest
part of the freezer in ice.

Lynn,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was in the very same situation recently. I lost
an adult cat to FeLV in January not realizing he was a positive until he
suddenly became seriously ill. From the time of the diagnosis until I had to
put him to sleep was one week. My 4 other (all indoor) cats had to be tested
and luckily they all turned up negative so had them all vaccinated. They'd
only been exposed to the positive one for about 6 months but they shared food
and water bowls, litterboxes and bedding. My vet advised me to have them
re-tested in 6 months. So far they all seem healthy but now that they've been
exposed I check them regularly for any sign of enlarged lymph glands, the first
symptom the feLV positive cat exhibited.

I hope this information helps. I can tell you that this forum has been an
extremely valuable resource of information for me since losing my Chat Noir to
this horrible disease.

Best of luck to you,

Re: [Felvtalk] posting to thread on Felvtalk

2011-04-01 Thread Maureen Olvey

About 3 weeks ago I lost a two year old to FeLV. She tested negative as a
kitten but obviously the test was wrong or she had just gotten it when they did
the test. I foster with a humane society so I have a house full of other cats.
Some of those cats lived with the cat that died for a year and a half. So far
I've tested four of them and all four have tested negative. I'm going through
the process of having the rest of my cats tested but after living with a FeLV
positive cat for a whole year and a half I expected at least one of those four
to have contracted it. Especially since they too were kittens when they came
to live here with her. They had all shared food and water bowls and
litterboxes. Matter of fact, I have an FIV positive adult that lives here and
has been here the last two years. He came here a few months before she did.
He developed asthma last year and at that time I had bloodwork done on him.
Even after living with her for a year he still hadn't gotten FeLV. I'm going
to test him again because he's at a high risk already having immune system
issues but I don't understand how he didn't have it last year after being with
her for a year.

All of that to tell you not to freak out about your adult. You do need to have
her re-tested and to keep an eye out for health issues because it is a serious
disease, but many many adult cats exposed to FeLV are able to extinguish the
virus. The last I read said as much as 50% of them could. Another 25-30% or
so could put the virus into dormancy so that it is in their bone marrow but
they never have problems from it and aren't able to pass it to another cat.
Several websites say that only 30% of them at most contract it and die from it.
There's so much reading on the web and I encourage you to research it.

Everyone in this group has lots of experience with it so you'll learn a lot
from here too.

Keep in mind that if your adult does test positive on the ELISA test that is
done at the vet's office you would need to have another test, the IFA, done to
confirm it. The ELISA test easily produces false positives.

Good luck and I hope your adult is one of those in the higher percentage that
will never have problems with FeLV.

Re: [Felvtalk] posting to thread on Felvtalk

2011-04-01 Thread Lynda Wilson

Val,

Thank you for your kindness. I am so sorry that you had the same experience.
I've heard that the virus sheds when it is in stage 5. Unfortunately, the
article I read online did not say how you can tell when they are in that
stage. I'm so happy that your cats have tested negative and I pray that they
will be in 6 mos as well. Keep me posted if you don't mind.

My situation was this: I was fostering a kitten from the humane society. He
tested negative for leukemia as a young kitten at 3 mos old and his mother
did as well. The litter that he came from all had coccidia. Supposedly, he
was cured from it, but I thought different. Before I could adpot him I had
to have him neutered by a vet assoc. with the HS. I had him neutered when
he was 5 1/2 mos old so I could take him to my vet shortly after. He had
been in my home at 3 mos old and played with my 2 yr old cat (Muffin) all
the time. Before getting him (the HS kitty) neutered, he was tested again
for FeLV and it was negative. My cats groomed each other, shared the litter
box, food, water, toys, you name it. Then on 3-10-11 (9 mos old then) I
took him to my vet because he was acting lethargic and had not had a BM in
the litter box in 2 days. He was still eating and drinking the day prior.
The first thing my vet did was listened to his heart. She stated he had a
heart murmur. She then looked at his gums and they were completely white and
she said he was anemic and had to run some tests. She did the ELISA test
and he was a faint positive for FeLV. I'm not sure if a faint positive has
any meaning to it. But, I ended up putting him down that day because he was
suffering (he sure did hide his symptoms well!). His oxygen level was
extremely low. According to his blood work, FeLV was in his bone marrow. I
did let the Humane Society know so they could have his siblings tested.

I had Muffin tested the day I put the kitten to sleep. Muffin tested
negative on the ELISA test. I pray that Muffin will be negative for FeLV
for life (he is a Ragdoll and is a very stress free cat which is great!).
He seems to miss his playmate. I'd like to get another cat but we are
waiting until June to test again. Do you think if he tests negative in June
that it will be safe to get another cat? I told my vet that I want the IFA
test done as well as the ELISA test. I will test Muffin for enlarged lymph
glands as well. How do you do this?

If you could share any more thoughts with me, I would sure appreciate it!

Also, how do I post a thread in the forum?

Thanks for responding :0)

Lynn

I can't believe I forgot to mention that the HS kitty that recently died
from FeLV was also diagnosed with the coronavirus (which is in relation to
FIP). His immune system was compromised at a very early age. Having coccidia
(as a newborn) and diagnosed wih the coronavirus (at 5 1/2 mos) contributed
to his weakened immune system.

Keep in mind that if your adult does test positive on the ELISA test that is
done at the vet's office you would need to have another test, the IFA, done
to confirm it. The ELISA test easily produces false positives.

Good luck and I hope your adult is one of those in the higher percentage
that will never have problems with FeLV.

Subject: [Felvtalk] posting to thread on Felvtalk

Hi Mr. Wilson!

I would like to take part in the discussions about Feline Leukemia. I
recently had a 9 mos. old kitten die from FeLV. I'm very concerned about
my 2 yr old cat contracting the disease. It would help me to talk to other
people that have experienced having exposed a FeLV kitten to a cat within
the same house.

Please let me know how I can start a thread and read some past posts
regarding FeLV.

Thanks for your help. I really need some support.

Sincerely,
Lynn

Re: [Felvtalk] Felvtalk - introduction - Chewie and Stitch

2010-04-08 Thread Joe Reil
Good evening,

I don't know if anyone currently active remembers me, I first signed up for
this list in April of 2007, when one cat (Chewie) was diagnosed with FELV after
getting sick.

I haven't been really active on here since, but I thought I'd post again with
an update. My original introduction message is copied below.

It is with sadness that I report that Stitch, who I mentioned originally has
having been tested shortly after Chewie died has now left us, almost exactly 3
years after Chewie did.

Stitch has done great these last few years, we never had any problems and had
some hopes that she might have fought the virus off.

Sadly, this was not the case. She started acting sick this weekend and we
brought her to the vet on Tuesday. She'd lost a few pounds since her last
visit, and a blood test revealed that she was very low on red blood cells, the
Vet thinking that she had a bone marrow disease as she didn't seem to have any
new red blood cells at all (could this be myeloproliferative leukemia, which
I've seen mentioned in other places?). Given that she was FELV positive and was
clearly suffering, we decided to have her put to sleep.

Anyway, though I haven't been really active here, folks were very helpful after
my initial post and the info and support I did get here were instrumental in
keeping Stich as healthy as she was for as long as she was. It's still really
hard, but I know that we did everything that we could for her.

She was a very special kitty, and she'll be greatly missed.

These are direct links to photos I have stored on my Facebook stage, I'm not
sure if they'll work like this, but we shall see. These are both very recent
photos of Stitch:

Howdy all,

This is my first post to this list, thought I'd do a
bit of intro.

We had three cats in our family. The older two were
both "castaways" that were adopted as adults. Zoro was
the oldest and I adopted him from a co-worker when I
lived by myself. He died several years ago.

The remaining two were Stitch and Chewie. Chewie was
the next oldest. She had a really hard start to life,
she was originally found, as a stray by some friends
of ours. She was probably two or three at the time and
she had evidence of being abused - she had some
suspicious scars on her underside.

She lived with them for a while, very shy/nervous and
eventually came out of her shell. A couple years
later, they had to move, and couldn't take her with
them so we took her in. We had her for several years
as well and while we don't know her exact age, best
estimate put her at 8-10 years old when she died last
month.

She had a loss of appetite and started losing weight.
She had two trips to the Vet - after the first visit
she took a serious turn for the worse so we had her
back at the vet only a few days later. A blood test on
the second visit revealed that she had FelV. So,
considering she was very sick and was suffering from a
pretty serious disease we opted to put her to sleep
then. :(

I didn't know much about FelV then (and I'm still
learning about it), but information from both our Vet
and online resources I found indicated that it was
contagious so we decided to have our third (and
youngest) cat tested for it. Stitch is the only one we
got as a Kitten and she's about 3.5 years old.

I brought her to the vet this weekend and she tested
positive for FelV. :(

I do intend to learn as much as I can about the
disease so we can keep her with us as long as
possible. I know that it will eventually catch up to
her and our main thing will be to put that off as long
as possible. She's still young and healthy so
hopefully that'll be a long time still. :)

We had been planning to get a second cat, but we've
put that plan on hold now. I know it is possible to
inoculate against FelV, but given that the vaccine
takes a while to take effect, we'd either have to
quarantine the new cat until the vaccine took effect
or find it someplace else to live for a month or so,
and on top of all that I don't think we want to put
Stitch through the stress of another housemate at the
moment (she doesn't react well to strangers).

Thanks,

Joe

[Felvtalk] Interferon

2010-06-27 Thread Stacy Zacher
Hi:

I received a bottle of interferon from my vet. He told me it was a 90 day
supply but it says discard after 30 days on the bottle. I know many posts have
said that you draw it up into syringes and then freeze and I know it doesn't
last long.  I'm guessing I need to do that but my vet told me to call the
compounding pharmacy that diluted it and sent it and just make sure.

The bottle says Interferon Alpha 2B 60 IU/ML 45 ML give .5 ML by mouth once
daily.  I thought I had read most people are giving 1 ML daily or 7 on 7 off?
This came from US Compounding with an address in Conway AZ.  I didn't get much
instruction with the bottle!

So I am wondering about freezing and then do you know of any economic sites
where I can buy the 1 ML syringes in a box off 100 and the syringe caps? I am
also looking for empty small gelcaps.

Thanks!

[Felvtalk] interferon

2010-06-28 Thread Stacy Zacher
Thanks to everyone for their help with the interferon questions I posted and
answering questions on the dosageThanks also for bringing up the absorption and
whether or not to give with food as that is a question I forgot to post. I have
been giving it to him in the morning after he eats but not with food.  Should I
be giving it before he eats breakfast? Any reason why not to give him the dose
at night?

The interferon came in a brown bottle that I have to refrigerate and with a 1
ML syringe.  I just thought if I had to freeze it, I would need a bunch of
syringes. I have a call into the pharmacy that sent it to me to ask why the
bottle shows as expiring after a month instead of the 3 months they told my
vet.

I did originally call the # for Island on this site and they answered the phone
as Franck's.
http://www.islandpharmacy.com/ - 800-622-4510 - my vet had to fax them the
prescription and talk to them and then I had to call this # and pay for the
interferon and they shipped it within 2 days.

Thanks

According to Island Pharmacy - they use to
compound a lot of interferon, but
no longer do it - it was not
recommended to freeze the final dilution of
interferon, just keep it
in the fridge, they always said it was good for 90
days that way.
The dosage for cats is 30 IU a day.  The compound you have
is made
to have 1 ml equal 60 IU, so to get the correct daily dosage of 30
IU,
you would use only .5 ml.  Whether you use a protocol with a daily
dosage,
or the 7 on 7 off protocol is a choice you have to make.

I don't
know how your interferon is packaged, but if you do not need a
needle
to withdraw it and can use just an oral syringe, I would Google for a
1
ml oral syringe with cap.  Most of the syringes listed as oral syringes

will not accept a needle, so they are not dual purpose.

[Felvtalk] Maggie

2010-07-08 Thread TANYA NOE
Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I have been able to get on. I found out last
month that my FelV+ Maggie who turned 2 years old 16 days ago was just
diagnosed with a grade 4/6 heart murmur. She has seen many vets in her short
life and has not had a detectable one previously not even 7 months ago when she
had her bi-annual physical and blood work. I took her in for her physical and
because lately she has had some exercise intolerance that isn't normal for a 2
year old. Her heart ultrasound gave us a diagnosis of hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy. Her walls were very thick and flow greatly reduced. We started
he on Enalapril.
I was wondering if anyone else has had the same diagnosis and if so if
there was anything that worked well for your little ones. Her heart disease is
progressing very quickly and I was told that with her type there isn't anything
they can do to slow it down, we are only making her more comfortable with the
Enalapril by making her heart not have to work as hard.
 Any advice is appreciated,
Tanya (Maggie's Mom)

2010-07-26 Thread jbero tds.net
Alice,

I am so sorry. I was really hoping the LTCI would do it. Pet tinic and
epogen and whatever else may help with anemia is usually only a temporary
fix. The real problem is the underlying bone marrow deficiency due to
infectivity with virus. I have been with this group long enough to have
hopes for so many different possibilities. Sometimes they work, sometimes
not. I know you have too.

I have a long shot. I requested this for Wolfie too, but want to ask you.
There is a tonic comprised of four herbs. They are anti-inflammatory, and
for cancer. A host of secondary positive effects have been noted with its
use including cessation of certain viral infections. It appears to seek out
and destroy abnormal cells while leaving healthy ones behind. It also
provides an anti-inflammatory which in many settings can be beneficial. It
hasn't been used for felv as far as I can tell, but in theory I think it
could help. If you are interested I can get you the name of the herbs,
where to get them and how to prepare them. It takes time to do it and
concentrate it so it may take a week before you have the final product. Let
me know what you think.

The herbs in graviola, neem and chaparral. The fourth is escaping me right
now, but I can find it.

God bless and I will pray for you.

[Felvtalk] Cyst

2010-07-28 Thread Stacy Zacher
Hi:

Thanks for the news on Acemannan Gary. That is really too bad about it being
off the market now.

I have a question on Spanky. We have a vet appt on Saturday for his 2nd LTCI
Imulan injection. Now his cyst in his whiskers seems to be getting larger.
Yesterday he scratched it and kept breaking it open and was bleeding all over.
Short of putting an e-collar on him I'm not sure what else to do!  I've been
putting triple antibiotic on it and he licks it right off. The vet will look at
it Saturday of course.  Should I have them aspirate it? I am just afraid of any
ramifications if they open it and make things worse and he gets an infection.
If the recommend antibiotics should I give them to him? He was on metronidazole
a few times since march for intestinal issues.  I guess I feel really stupid
asking all of this but if it weren't an immune suppressed kitty, it would be
easier to figure out.  They suggested that his cysts could really be mast cell
tumors - the one his his face grew in the last month (or became infected and
swelled up). His routine
has been the same, eating/drinking/using this box all okay.   Any ideas or
thoughts are greatly appreciated.
PS I had read turmeric was good for tumors/cysts but most of what I find is for
dogs and then there is a percentage that says never feed it to your cat or dog.

Thanks much, Purrs, Stacy and Spanky

[Felvtalk] Mixing

2010-10-13 Thread Melinda Kerr

OK,  I know I am going to get some really strong opinions on this one.   What I
really want is positive feedback from people who have mixed positives and
negatives.  My Fuji contacted her FeLV from her mom and it didn't show up on
her initial test.  We did not know she was positive until a mediastinal mass
developed when she was almost a year old.  She now receives chemo and is doing
really well. Since her first treatment in July, she has never shown any signs
of being sick.

Today, I "rescued" a stray that I thought for certain would be positive.
However, the initial test was negative.  I have the cats separated and intend to
vaccinate as soon as one of my vets gets the vaccine in.  They have been introduced to
each other and seem as though they will get along quite well.  Fuji is not a fighter and
I cannot see her biting him.  Neither of my vets seem to think that mixing them will be a
problem.

I read the old threads and saw that many of you have mixed with great results.
I did not see any stories of mixing where a vaccinated negative became
positive.  I'm looking for stories of success or failure.  Please share your
stories!

Thanks,

[Felvtalk] Murphy

2010-10-27 Thread Amy
Alice,

I'm so sorry to hear about Murphy. I will so miss reading about him. I feel
like I knew him and hoped for him to beat this disease like I do my own cats.
I got introduced to this disease when I found a mom and three kittens that all
tested positive and have never had a cat that's not positive since. I read
your posts always hoping your kitties would defy the odds and live long adult
lives. You were so wonderful to Murphy. I hope you have many happy memories
to bring you comfort during this sad time.

2010-11-03 Thread Peggy Verdonck
Hi,

This is the first email I'm sending out since 1 of my cats got diagnosed
with Felv yesterday.
We have 7 other cats but THANK GOD every single one of them tested negative
(snap/elisa).
We have to have them tested again in 6 months. Do I have to wait that long
or can we have them tested sooner?
We separated Oreo from the rest of the cats and disinfected everything. Oreo
will be lab tested again next week, just to make sure. I heard
false-positives are quit common.
Oreo got put on Clavamox 125 mg to fight the secondary infections. Is the
dosage not to high for a cat? I know that cats normally get 62.5 mg. She
threw up this morning after I gave it to her.
I will call the vet tomorrow and ask the vet about the dosage and if she can
maybe subscribe injections. I hate to have to fight with her every time I
have to give her her meds. Makes me feel so guilty to do this to her. She
has no clue why she has to sit in a seperate room by herself :-(
She also gets pet-tinic and viralys. What else can I do to help her fight of
this infection. She has a cold and a fever.

If she tests positive again next week, we are forced to find a new home for
her. Maybe somebody who has no other cats, or someone who has 1 or more cats
with the same condition. I was wondering if anyone knows of anybody who
might be able to take her. We are willing to help pay for the medications
she might need.
She is such a sweet cat and I'm heart broken about this situations! My cats
are my everything!

Thanks,

Peggy

[Felvtalk] LTCI

2010-12-09 Thread Sharon Fazio
Hi,

I want to introduce myself and my very beautiful Ragdoll kitten Kelsea who
tested positive for FeLV in the bone marrow ( I know it is not a good thing)
. Kelsea was diagnose with FeLV about 8 weeks ago. Right now she is doing
wonderful on the treatment plan her vet has her on, which includes
Interferon, Atopic and a steroid. She was on dimethylgycine to build up her
red blood cells, she has been off the dimethlgycine for about two weeks now.

At this point all her all her blood work is normal. She is putting on
weight; over 2 pounds since her diagnoses. To look at this little one you
would not even know she was sick. : )

I’m hoping someone could let me know anything about LTCI. I’m not thinking
about change Kelsea’s med now, since she is doing so well. I would just
like a little more information on LTCI. i.e. what kind of success has it had
in FeLV. I am also wondering what are the chances the FeLV will go into
remission if it is in the bone marrow? Kelsea’s vet tell me that the chances
are very low, but I just need to know if it has happen to anyone out there.

Many Purrr to all,

Kelsea and Sharon ( Kelsea’s Mom)

2010-12-12 Thread Katy Doyle
Hey, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am Katy and I have two FeLV+ cats. I
live in Kentucky.

I have worked in animal rescue for about a year and a half, since I graduated
college in 2009. I found a 5-week old kitten, Buddy, abandoned in a gulley next
to a parking lot, summer of '09. He tested positive for the FeLV blood test and
tested positive again several months later.

He is very healthy and is very playful. I felt very bad that he was alone all
the time, when I saw on one of my animal rescue networks that another FeLV+ cat
needed a home. So I took her in, het name is Chloe.

So far, they are healthy and active. The only way I can tell that they have
FeLV is that they test positive and they get sick easily.

Vets in area told me to put them asleep now, even though they are healthy.
Small town vets don't seem to be very educated on the FeLV subject.

Reading all the emails lately have given me a lot of hope and I really
appreciate this email list. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

[Felvtalk] Isaac

2011-02-20 Thread czadna sacarawicz

Isaac would have been 3 years young on 4.14. He tested positive along with 4
others of my inner circle of seven on 3.1.2010. I did not test further but put
efforts into food and supplements.

Isaac was big (not fat) black, neutered and active and appeared healthy and
aggravated Scrumptious assertively. This group lived an indoor-outdoor life in
the rural Carolina Piedmont.

Tuesday morning he did not eat. His breath was horrendous. He liked to eat -
- I used to joke with him that he and I both needed to spend time on the
treadmill. That night he was not there nor on Wednesday nor Thursday morning
though I searched and called. Thursday night he answered. He could not move
and his pupils were dilated and fixed. He did not look as if he had been
attacked by dogs or coyotes.

I took him the 14 miles home and hydrated him orally during the night. He got
up to walk several times during the late night morning but would walk 3 steps
and wobble and fall down; he would cry out while sleeping with me or when I
moved him but I did not know what the matter was. Conscious but not responsive
to me. (the crying out & walking with falling down reminiscent of Torie Rose -
- in her last earthly night. She was the first and original of this inner
circle of 8 who was euthanized 2.28.2010). I made an appointment with a vet
for Friday. He gave fluids - - thought Isaac's teeth and forehead spoke of
liver failure, said his lungs were clear and heart sounded good though a little
fast. The plan was to do fluids over the weekend and reassess early in the
week. Vet said could be leukemia. could be poison. didn't know.

I unintentionally killed him Friday night and will say no more about that.
That is a heavy load.

To have him suddenly in major distress was unimaginable. He was only a
nanometer beyond Scrumptious in closeness to me. He and Shallie Marie appeared
to be the healthiest. This is the last thing I would have expected.

Thank you for hearing my story.

any wisdom or insights will be appreciated.

Blessings

Okay guys we need your help big time. Abbey is felu and fel imun positive. She

improved but not all - in the back between upper and lower still red. Not on
any meds for now. She will not lick lysine. Am going to try to water down
lysine and get it in her or spread pill powder and mix in food. Would mixing
bovine interferon maybe help? I am frantic to help her. She does not deserve
this. Cannot pill. Feeding watered down a/d or baby food or fancy feast. She
has a great appetite until she hits her sore area with a piece of food. She
has 10 days til she goes back to the vet. He is thinking about steriods. Any
ideas of what to do? I really don't want to put her on steriods unless nothing
else to do. She is the baby that was dumped by my great neighbors and they
moved leaving her outside with no food or water or anywhere to sleep unless she
crawled under the slab of their house.
Abbey is the sweetest loving black cat. We apreciate any help you can offer.

I got her to eat with a 500 mg lysine mixed in with food twice now. Will add
bovine inteferon also tonight. She has a good appetite. Rick said she gained a
pound. I have printed your suggestions and will give them to him to read.
Thank you so much. Any thing else will be greated appreciated. I have only

Poppy is a little wild 6 month old kitten just tested & found FeLeuk
positive. She was one 3 beautiful white with black kittens trapped on
Monday. She is mostly white with a black mask & a black tail with a
little white tip. Pale green eyes like those marbles we used to play
with as kids. Her mother & siblings all tested negative.

We had blood drawn yesterday for the IFA test & are waiting for that to
determine what to do. If it's positive, then we will be trying to find
a place for this beautiful little girl to live out what she has of her
life. If negative, then we will retest at some point & she will join her
brother Percy & sister Prissie in being socialized & readied for
adoption. At the moment she is in a condo in the back of my car while
we wait for the test results. I don't want to bring her into my spare
room at this point when the test results are pending as being wild,
catching her again right away would be a huge challenge!

I have 10 cats of my own in a little house & I know that a FeLeuk cat
can safely share a house with negative kitties, provided they are kept
separate. I don't want her to be alone, whether she is definitely
positive or turns out to be negative & I can't take in any more cats -
doctor's orders.

Any advice or information would be gratefully received,

[Felvtalk] Questiions

2011-06-04 Thread Pam Norman

Hi all,

We are trying to give little Sabriina a chance. She is an approximately
5 month old lynx Siamese. She was pulled from a dope house & was going
to come to us as a foster until she was tested positive for FeLeuk. At
the moment she is at a sanctuary about 75 miles from here. We are
desperately trying to find someone who will take her for the
approximately 6 months that I understand will give a good idea whether
she can beat this virus or not. She is healthy & looks great. She has
had so far only the snap test & as I understand it, the IFA test should
follow in about 3 weeks. Is this correct?

We have a daughter of a friend who MAY take her. But she has two small
children & the family had to put down their 2 Siamese about a year ago &
they are not anxious to take in a kitty that they will have to euthanize
soon. I have not spoken to her yet but will be tomorrow & I am planning
on telling her pretty much the following:

There are no guarantees as to how long a kitty will live who has tested
positive for FeLeuk. It depends on a lot of factors - her general health
& how she is cared for - diet, freedom from stress, etc. Some kitties
will not live long at all; others can live for years: & still others
will fall somewhere in between. No guarantees. They have no other cats
right now & I can tell them for sure that they will never have to
euthanize her. If she continues to test positive, they have the option
of having us take her to the sanctuary where she is not & she would
join the other FeLeuk cats in that part of the sanctuary. Or they can
keep her & give her good & loving care for as long as she has, knowing
that they played a huge part in making her life one filled with love.
It would be hard on the kids but it would teach them something about
compassion, about caring for an animal that they may lose, that it will
hurt them to lose her, but that they know they have done a good &
beautiful thing.

Please tell me if there is more I can tell her. I have never had a
FeLeuk kitty before & I am no expert on this. So I am very much in need
to information I can provide that is fair & objective so that they can
make an informed & compassionate decision. I very much want them to take
her but I do not want to mislead them either.

Please help me.

I just realized our FeLV cat has fleas. Our other cats are housed separately
and haven't shown any sign of them, so I'd like to nip this in the bud. I
don't like using chemicals when I can possibly avoid them, but I have to do
something. Can anyone recommend an effective flea treatment program for a
FeLV+ cat? I'd also welcome suggestions of cleaning supplies that won't harm
him.

He's housed in our basement and really needs/deserves a forever home of his
own. He's fully vetted (vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped). He's the
sweetest cat we've ever fostered. He's a lovely blue/grey with green eyes.
Photos gladly provided to anyone interested.

[Felvtalk] Dexter

2011-06-21 Thread Ben Williams
Hello, everyone...

This is my first post to the list -- I just joined a few minutes ago. I'm
writing in regards to my cat, Dexter. Dexter was diagnosed with FeLV and
FIV this past October when he suffered a severe bout of life-threatening
anemia. By the time we found a vet who had any idea what was going on with
Dex (We had a slew of ridiculous diagnoses; including heartworm and herpes),
he was in need of a blood transfusion. The transfusion (at a whopping
$2200) and Acemannan treatment saved Dex's life and he bounced back within a
matter of weeks. All has been great with Dex - he's been on Interferon
Alpha 2B since and has been in seemingly great health. Until, that is, last
week. After seeing Dex start to show minute signs of anemia again, a quick
trip to the doctor confirmed that the infection was active and that Dex was
heading back down the same path as last October. Since then, we've been
racking our brains trying to figure out what to do for Dex. Our Doctor, Dr.
Benjamin Wright at Lakewood Vet Center in Dallas, has been exceptional.
He's been open to just about anything we can try to help Dex. As such, we
started Dex on Immunoregulin this past Friday and Dex just had his second
injection this morning. Unfortunately, Dex has seemed to go down hill in
the last 24 hours. He was at a relative high point on Sunday, seemed very
happy and lively, but as of yesterday and today, he is lethargic again and
obviously not happy at all, while his breathing has also become more
labored. Dr. Wright and I have been trying to contact the folks who make the
T-Cell Immunomodulator drug, but can't seem to get a call back from them.
Obviously, as I'm sure you all know, Carrington Labs, the makers of
Acemannan, are officially out of business as well, so that doesn't seem to
be an option. We also contacted the vet hospital that makes the Interferon
Omega packet available and haven't had a response from them. Where do we go
from here... Dex is only a year and a half old and is such a special cat.
We just want to do everything we can to help him. We'd do another blood
transfusion, but that's just too expensive at the moment.

Thanks for reading,

Ben

[Felvtalk] Dexter

2011-07-04 Thread Ben Williams
We are having a hard time making a very tough decision for Dexter. In the past
three days, Dex has suffered facial and paw swelling and has started having
difficulty breathing. Today has been bad and he is now receiving oxygen at the
Dallas emergency vet clinic. X-rays show that he has lymph node involvement in
every area and his liver and spleen are enlarged and have move out of the
proper body cavity. This puts him in, I think, stage 4 of lymphosarcoma. He is
whimpering and obviously in pain. We don't want to give up and we are willing
to do chemo for him. We want to do what's best for Dexter, but it is so hard to
make that final decision. Is it time for his suffering to be over? Does he
have a chance?

[Felvtalk] DMG

2011-07-05 Thread Natalie
Has any vet ever suggested using DMG (N, N-DIMETHYLGLYCINE)for FeLV+ cats?

I AM USING IT ON A FIV+ CAT THAT HAS PAINFUL STOMATITIS IN THE MOUTH, TO THE
POINT WHERE HE COULDN'T EAT; FIV/FeLV+ cats often get that condition, and
unfortunately, the only suggested and supposedly appropriate thing is to
have their teeth pulled by a specialist, with special emphasis on cleaning
out the areas extremely well. My vet says that he doesn't like doing it
because often it doesn't help at all, so we are trying DMG.

I am using the liquid form, but it apparently also comes in different forms.

It has many clinical uses and a variety of applications:

[Felvtalk] Question

2011-07-29 Thread Joslin Potter
Greetings Everyone,

We recently took in a kitten someone was going to put down from our vet, and
last night I was awaken in the middle of the night by a howling noise, i
thought it was our older cat but it was the kitten, she was growling in the
corner and for some reason went to the bathroom on the floor instead of her
litter box, is this common among FeLV cats? It was dr jeckle and Mr. Hyde, she
was back to her loving self this morning? I'm so confused I've never seen an
animal behave like that? When my older cat was dx he was more so "sick" we
thought he swallowed a bone? talk about one of the worst days ever!

Has anyone else had this happen?

[Felvtalk] Retesting

2011-07-30 Thread Pam Norman
Miss Nora, the FeLeuk kitty we got adopted here in Spring Green, is due
for retesting. In late May she tested positive on the Elisa & then in
the first week of June, she tested negative on the IFA. It's my
understanding that she should be re-tested 45 - 60 days after later.
Would that be the Elisa or the IFA or both?

[Felvtalk] Renters

I've had some good and some bad luck. The people who gave the place
the horrible flea infestation had several cats and a big lab dog. The
dog brought in the fleas when she went outside, and since they were
very lax about flea control the place became horribly infested. They
were also slobs and hoarders and the dog crapped on the floor because
they didn't walk her often enough. Cleaning up the place after them
was a nightmare!

After that I had a very neat renter who kept the place spotless and
had one cat and a cute little short haired dog who was kept flea
free. She left a few months ago, and since then we've been renovating
the apt. It's just about finished and I'm advertising it soon, as it
must rented by winter so I don't have to pay the utilities :-(

As for loud music etc. It's no problem because the apartment is not
in my house. It's on the second story of the big two story building
I bought in town. The first floor is my cat shelter. I made it into a
home like setting for my overflow of rescued cats. It has furniture,
climbing posts, window ledges, and large cat condos. There are many
rooms for the cats to run around in, NO CAGES, so they really good
have a good life. I wish they all had individual homes, but I know
they'd be dead by now if I hadn't taken them in as they were all
abandoned when I rescued them.

It has cost me a small fortune to buy this building and heat it, plus
the money I spend for vet bills, food and litter is several hundred
dollars a month, but it's what I want to do with a small inheritance
my parents left me. Ironically, my parents were not animal people,
and I often wonder how they'd feel about the way I'm spending the
interest from my inheritance.

[Felvtalk] Fletch

2011-09-05 Thread Marcia Baronda
Update and more questions. Yesterday Fletch ate very well and ate quite a few
treats too. He got up and walked around the kitchen for quite awhile. I was so
hopeful that maybe he was over the hump. Wrong. This morning he refused to eat
or drink and hasn't done so all day. I hav given him some electrolytes 3 times
today. He didn't like that a bit. He had very watery poop with hard chunks in
it. That happened twice. Once on the couch, which I have plastic on under his
blankets, and then another time I ran him to the litterbox. His fever is
back..I'm sure the aspirin wore off and he doesn't feel good at all. Is this
how this disease is all the time? Is this what his life is gonna be like from
now on? Because if it is, I can't see making him go through this. I don't think
he enjoys any part of this. Maybe he ate too much yesterday, I don't know. Do
they go thru this and then get better. Any insight will be appreciated. Where
does the fever come from?
Thanks guys, I sure do appreciate each and every one of you.

[Felvtalk] Update

2011-09-07 Thread April Johnson
Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I posted about my cat Spicy who I had adopted from animal
control unaware she hadn't been tested for FELV/FIV.  I was questioning whether
to get her a friend or not.  Last week I had her blood sent out to confirm if
she really had FELV.   Well her results came in yesterday, it's in her bone
marrow.  I still haven't decided on a friend for her yet, I'm unsure what to do
with my house already full.  I think I would need to adopt another cat with it
already in their bone marrow too, right?  I've never had a FELV+ cat, so I
don't know what to do.

[Felvtalk] Hunters

2011-09-12 Thread Georgetta Brickey

Your posts reminded me of something that happened 40+ years ago on our family
farm in Central California... during dove hunting season.

We did not allow hunters on our property, but when dying doves fell in our
fields and pastures after being shot nearby, hunters would climb over our
fences to retrieve the bloody bodies. One afternoon the shotgun pellets were
raining down on our roof and through the branches of our oak trees and we were
afraid to go outside so Mom called the county sheriff. When he arrived to talk
to them about unsafe shooting... Mom noticed his hand was bandaged...an idiot
dove hunter had actually shot the deputy in the hand!!! Go figure!

When I drove my 25 miles to work, each morning I felt like a cardboard duck in
a fair shooting gallery... groups of "hunters" parked on their backsides
sitting on coolers of beer with umbrellas erected overhead would wait on both
sides of the road for flocks to fly over. I managed to get to work unscathed
for 5 years, but was never certain I would survive the Sept - Nov. annual
killing season. Our hunting neighbor across the road went out with a few
friends and came back with only one eye... not a single "friend" would admit he
fired the blinding shot. Nice, huh?

[Felvtalk] Miller

2011-09-22 Thread Edna Taylor

Well, after trying one round of chemo last week Miller seemed to have a bit
more pep in his step and was eating like a champ but then on Tuesday, he didn't
want to eat so I force fed him and yesterday morning we took him in, vet gave
him subQ fluids and vitamins. I had an uneasy feeling all day and when I got
home I immediately went to where I knew he would be, behind the entertainment
center. He wouldn't move, he would not lift his head and when I picked him up,
he just hung limp in my arms. I knew then that it was time to let him go.
Fortunately, Dr. McCann was still at the office and she helped him cross over.
We may still have a house full of furbabies but his leaving has left a hole in
our hearts.

I shall see beauty but none to match your living grace,
I shall hear music but none as sweet
as the song with which you loved me,
I shall fill my days but I shall not, cannot forget.
Sleep soft, dear Miller. . .

It has been a very long time since I have posted anything. I first found this
site when my Smokey tested positive for feline leukemia. He had a hard time at
the beginning with fevers but we finally got that under control. He has gone
over 6 years with no problems or sickness. The other day I felt a very large
knot on his left front leg. I took him to the vet to get it checked out. He
thought it was probably cancer. He removed it today but he couldn't get all of
it. He described it as having tenticles going in all different directions. He
is sending it off to be sure it is cancer and what type. I have never dealt
with this before and Smokey's outlook seems pretty grave. Any opinions would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I posted an email to the moderator several days ago but I have yet to hear back
from her.  My situation is quite desperate with a stray cat that we took in.
Her name is Blackie and she was sitting on my door step several weeks ago on a
bitter cold day.  We fed her and put her up in my garage and she has been
living there the last several weeks.  We took her to the vet to get her
shots in attempt to get her adoption ready when the vet gave us the terrible
news that she has leukemia.  We have tried everywhere to get her adopted but
even the shelters will put her down because of the leukemia.  We would take her
in but family members have asthma and the cat would make it worse.  I am in
Cleveland and need help.  Please!  She is a wonderful and affectionate cat.  I
can send pics if you would like.  Does anyone have any recommendations for me?
Thanks, Kevin

one that posted about it.  I need to find out what I need to do to join the

You ask me to invite you to join the 2053 Googlegroup…..Once you are a member,
you can look through the archives, see success stories where salve was used on
people and animals, get all the info on how to get salve and where to order the
herbs to make the tonic (or buy small amount from list owner). It really is
miraculous – one man’s arm was saved from amputation, a horse’s eye with cancer
saved, many bunny and rat owners are members because those poor little critters
get cancers….

You can actually look salve and tonic online, but they are NOT the same and are
much more expensive….

If you would use the salve as soon as possible, so it can still seep in through
the incision, it would be ideal.  It will come back if it had tentacles and it
was most likely squamous cell….

I would look for someone who may have a colony of cats that are cared for by
someone….the kittens would become tame, though, if given a chance!

I have never heard of this black salve.  Does it really help?  Where can I get
more information on it and the group?  I should get the pathology results back
in a few days.  I have felt a couple of very small knots on other parts of his
body so I am afraid it has spread.  The vet did take out a couple of lymph
nodes too.  I just can't get over how big this one was & how I could have
missed it until now.  The vet told me that this one will come back and he was
afraid it would be pretty soon.  He said there was no reason to try to remove
it or any others because they would just come back.  I plan on spoiling him for
however long he has left.  When he seems like his quality of life isn't good
anymore then I will let him go.  Right now he is eating and playing.  He
doesn't act like anything is wrong.  I am so stressed out right now.  I trapped
a mom cat and her 2 kittens(although they are about 8 months old) and had them
spayed.  I found a home for the mom cat but I still have the kittens which are
feral and I can't find a home for them.  They came from my work so I don't know
anything else to do but take them back to work and let them

live there & me keep feeding them.  Does that sound terrible?  I just can't
keep them.  Anybody got any ideas?  I won't take them to the shelter because
someone told me they would euthanize them if they are feral.   Now poor Smokey
is sick.  Thanks for your prayers and ideas for Smokey.  I will let you know
what the pathology report says.

Would anyone with a cat or dog that has had cancer removed be interested in a

There is no reliable test for FIP. Your cat tested positive for corona

is caused by a form of corona virus to which some cats are genetically
predisposed to contract if exposed to it. FIP is not rare but it's definitely
not very prevalent. I have had cats who tested above 400 for corona virus and
never got FIP and a cat who definitely had FIP but tested very low for corona

  Hi Everyone

I am new to this list and to the world of Feline Leukemia. We have 3 precious
cats, and we found out at the end of last year that two are FeLV positive, and
of those two, one is FIP positive as well :(

  Details:
Kitty1 (11 years old, male) is the reason we got any of them tested at all.
He was just a little "off" - more subdued, less energy, a little on the skinny
side. He tested positive for FeLV and FIP. Our vet put him on a round of
cortisone and antibiotics, and he seemed to bounce back. He still isn't
completely 100% though (although hard to pinpint actual behaviours, more just a
general sense I have), and is still skinnier than I would like.

Kitty2 (11 years old, male) also tested positive for FeLV (but not FIP). He
currently has no noticeable symptoms at all, although he does vomit a lot. This
has been going on for 5-6 years though, and he is long-haired, so I don't think
it is related.

Kitty3 (1 year old, male) tested negative for both viruses (and FIV). We had
him vaccinated against FeLV when he tested negative, and he had the booster 4
weeks later. We will continue to give him the vaccination every year.

If you got through all of this, thanks so much. Now my questions:

Q1. I want to start Kitty1 on some form of treatment, just to build him
up/keep him strong. I have the sense that all is not 100%, even although he is
not noticeably unwell, is eating fine etc. I was thinking of asking our vet to
start Interferon. Any thoughts here? Suggestions? Would something else be
better? Would it be bad to start a treatment like this before he is noticeably
sick? What is the recommended dosage here?
Q2. Is there anything I should be doing for Kitty2. He seems fine, hasn't
lost weight etc. He does throw up a lot, but has for the last 5-6 years.
Q3. We have decided to keep Kitty3 instead of rehoming him, after a lot of
thought. He has had 3 homes in the last year (a shelter rescue who was then
neglected by the person who adopted him... g...), and he is so settled with
us, that I worry about trying to find him yet another home. I think he must
have been exposed by now in any case (the older boys would groom him on the
face when he was little), so my prayer is that he has immunity. Am I being
naive here? Should we find him another home?
Q4. Any tips, advice, suggestions on what I can do to prolong our boys' lives
with a reasonable quality?

Thanks so much in advance. And sorry for the long message.

  Vicky

I lost another one today – I am totally drained. Preston, who was blind and
declawed, found abandoned in September in a rural area in CT, has been with us
all this time, looking for a home. He finally had a home to go to tomorrow.  I
had been treating him for CRF and while I was giving him fluids last night, I
noticed that he breathed in an odd way…I thought that I heard a sort-of
rattling in his lungs when I carried him.  He always purred and made cookies
(happy feet) on his beloved fleece blanket…I decided to get him checked out one
more time before he was to leave tomorrow.  X-rays were taken – huge mass in
his lungs, fluids drained were yellow and red, and he started fading fast.  We
rushed back to the hospital, and held him while he was euthanized….Natalie

So sorry about S’Matter.
I lost a cat yesterday, had to have Quigley euthanized. NOT from  FeLV, but to
a very severe kidney infection – he was over 16 yrs old, grey with the most
amazing emerald green eyes (left on our doorstep in a carrier years ago).

[Felvtalk] Uveitis

2012-03-12 Thread Maureen Olvey

Anyone ever dealt with Uveitis (eye inflammation)? My FeLV kitten had a
scratch or something in her eye but that is healed but her eye is still really
red and irritated. The vet suspects her FeLV is causing the irritation and
redness to continue. Right now she's taking Baytril and Clavamox, Interferon
Alpha, and Flurobiprofen drops and Terramycin ointment in the eye.

Hey guys not to get off from subject butI was interested in what everyone
thinks about the Presidential Canidates, is their a reason why one should
choose one over the other? Obama pledges support for nearly every animal

executive agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make their
policies more humane, according to Global Philosophy. However Mitt Romeny  has
made no clear statements or policies on animal issues. Reports also show that

has done a few things in his state for better laws in reference to animal

Ok.. you are profiling and that is just plain wrong:) If we have the past 4
yours as the next 4 years, there will be a mass revolt.
Seriously, from mass job losses, no growth of our country, the division of our
country, we have to take a chance on a new person:) It can't get any worse.
That is my 2 cents!

Now , back to our Felv + kitties. I am fairly new to this group and joined
because of losing my cat, Prancer. He lived for 9+ years, a very healthy life.
Then bang, like a whirlwind, we lost him. So my two questions to this group is
the following:

How many of you have a Felv cat that is 9 + years old and extremely healthy?
Have any you used Interferon for your cat?

The reason for the above questions is because my Vet ( Great Vet!!) A Father
/Son team both informed me that they have never seen a cat with Felv live as
long as Prancer and be in such great health. Prancer was on Interferon off and
on for 4-5 years. I swear by it! And it is fairly inexpensive.. $26 for a
bottle. Looking forward to your feedback! Thanks!

Best Regards,

Lisa

[Felvtalk] Interferon

2012-10-12 Thread Lisa Conner

Hi All,

I think everyone was so hung up with this politcal debate, no one saw my 2
questions on Interferon and the length of years a Felv + cat has lived.

Ok- so, I joined when my 9 + year old boy, Prancer became very
sick..literally overnight. He breathing was extremely labored and I rushed him
to the Emergency Vet. They said he was critical , and didn't think he was
going to make it. May be best to put him to sleep since he was Felv+ and
needed oxygen and and his gums were pale. That night they extracted 3 ½ cups
of fluid from his lungs. Thank goodness, because that saved his life. In the
morning we transferred him to our regular vet and our vet thought it was his
heart. He was right. The ultrasound showed a huge mass tumor at the base of
his heart. The vet wasn't sure how much time Prancer had, however, he said it
might be a day or week, depending on how much fluid built up in his lung area.
Within 4 days, the fluid was back and I could not have him suffer as I lost my
Dad to the the suffering of congestive heart failure (with build up of fluid in
the lungs).

So, my vet believes that Interferon might have helped Prancer over the years,
since in all his years in practice, they have not seen a cat like Prancer,
great health for 9 ½ years, but be Felv +.

Has anyone in this group used Interferon with their cats and what is the
typical avg span life for Felv+ cats?

Thanks!

[Felvtalk] Advice

2012-10-18 Thread Dawn Morrison
My 7yr old has up till this point shown no signs of the virus.
Tuesday she was acting very odd and not eating. I took her to the vet, who ran
bloodwork.
Her lympocytes were incredibly high, wbc was high (can't remember the numbers),
she had a 104 temp. She got injections of b12, steroid, antibiotic and I was
sent home with antibiotic and pain meds if needed and an appetite stimulant.
Wed she wouldn't eat again so I was syringe feeding her. I have been giving her
the anitbio and app stimulant. Today she started to eat on her own, although I
will still syringe to make sure she's getting enough nutrients.  She also has
IBD but the vet said to give her whatever she'll eat at this point to at least
get her wanting to eat again. We sent the bloodwork out to a lab to assure the
in house results were correct, they were.
My vet wants to start her on cerenia, keep her on the anitbio and the app
stimulant. We're basically going to take it day by day at this point. Since she
is now shedding the virus she is staying in her bedroom (which has a screen
door on it) but is a little stressed that she can't come out and visit when we
are home. I've been going in and visiting as much as possible but it's hard
when I'm gone for most of the day. We have another kitty who we have to get
tested in 2 months to see if she was exposed.
If anyone has suggestions or opinions I would appreciate it. Also, has anyone
used cerenia and is there anything I should know about it?
Has anyone else gone through similiar experiences and can offer any advice?

Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.
Dee

[Felvtalk] Stomatitis

2013-02-03 Thread Korruptakitty
My Awesome Pawsome kitty just began doing this stuff. Pawing at her mouth,
getting finicky and being standoffish when it comes to anywhere near her food
bowl. She wasborn to an FeLV+ mom in a feral colony here in San Diego, and I
tamed her at 5 weeks (to 8 weeks--took about 3 weeks) old with her siblings. 3
out of four kittens tested positive. In a couple of months time, only 1 out of
4 remained positive, and she is the one. She has been so healthy, save for an
awful case of calici she got about ayear and a half ago which almost killed
her, that I reallyhad been hoping she might still"turn" negative. I have heard
of this happening this late in the disease. She has been asymptomatic and so
very "normal" looking for 3 years. But I think the time I have been dreading
is approaching. She now has something going on in her mouth, just started last
week and I took her to my vet. He said she has the early stages of stomatis,
he is fairly sure, though he could find nothing really disconcerting right now
to be worried about, and he gave her a shot of covenia. But at home, I see her
mouth more swollen, and how she sticks out her tongue over and over in obvious
distress of some sort... and I see it beginning.I have seen cats with bad
cases of stomatitis and I am fearful for my Pawsome kitty. For a cat born with
FeLV she has been so good for so long. People have told me three years is
about tops for the life span of a cat born with FeLV that becomes persistently
viremic, so I guess in that respect she is lucky she has made it so long so
apparently healthy, but I guess she will not be so lucky as to "turn" at this
point in time. So,I now am bracing myself for mouth problems in her. I wish I
had a lot of money I would investigate that laser treatment for her,but I do
not. I am in rescue, and I live on SSI, anyway, so between the two I am pretty
broke all the time. haha (And I now have a cat with hyperthyroid, one with
fatty liver, one with FeLV+, and one with the beginning stages of an anal sac
problem, which I believe is the case because she is scooting her buns across the
floor alot and cries out jat times while pooping. And two semi ferals in a
double connected large dog cages, that can not be loose in the apt. that I need
to find something suitable for Oh, and I am taking in a 17 yr old from West
LA shelter, next week,as a favor to another rescue friend, and that one will
need fluids daily, for renal issues And those are only the sick ones. What a
sucker I am.)

Anyway, I am, paying close attention to all of this, needless to say.

[Felvtalk] Studies

2013-02-03 Thread Lee Evans
I noticed something about humans that is unique to our species. We seem to have
an endless ability to purposely misunderstand what is being said or proposed.
And we put absolute faith in "studies". As the secretary of an animal rights
organization, a genuine 501 c-3, I have been asked why I was advocating that
animals be given the same benefits as humans and wouldn't that be terribly
expensive. Duh? I think these people were mostly worried about their own right
to eat cows, chickens, sheep, pigs, turkeys, and other edible beings. But I
even hear, on occasion that animal rights advocates want there to be some form
of education for animals and that if we have our way, there would eventually be
no more animals on Earth because we are against ;breeding dogs and cats, etc..
Really!  And when I happened to mention animal welfare, I got the response that
there are enough lazy people on welfare, we don't need to put animals on
welfare in addition. Welcome to
 the Twilight Zoned Out.

OK. I feel it necessary to clear up all these misconceptions  with a name
change. From now on I will tell people I am an Animal Advocate. That means that
I speak up for animals. Right? Except in UK where it would mean that an animal
can hire me as a lawyer.

I also seem to have read somewhere that rats, mice, voles, etc. reproduce, much
as any other mammal does. A study shows that if the entire New York Sewer
system was emptied of rats and mice and a few alligators, if a male and female
rat and a male and female mouse were to be placed there on January 1, in just
under a year, the entire New York Sewer system would have the same number of
rodents as it had before. This study is based on absolutely no verifiable
research, and is simply a product of an over-active imagination. As is the
study that cats kill BILLIONS of small mammals and birds each year.

I need a cup of coffee. Uh, no. Last study I read, coffee was not good for the
health. But that was refuted  by the former study that it is good for the
health and can prevent senility. However, I can't have a sandwich any more
because whole wheat or any wheat, oats, bananas, orange juice, and most food is
a health hazard, except for animal based food I guess because I haven't seen
any studies recently to prove that animal protein is harmful and the myth of
clogged arteries from animal fat has been debunked, rebunked and debunked
again. I'm down to eating floor dust.

from cats. Meow? My tenant, when I had a rent house, insisted that FIV
was highly contagious but FeLv was NOT. Tail backwards. People to this
day refuse to hug a person who is living with HIV but will shake hands
with someone who has a horrid head cold and get all chummy with people
who are coughing all over the air.
>>
>>Many veterinarians seem not to
like cats to the point of finding reasons to put them to death. Others
are simply too lazy to study new theories of medicine. In some cases, we
have not traveled more than inches away from dancing around the bonfire
to banish evil spirits as a cure for illness.
>>
>>Finally, we are
now being treated to amazingly inflated statistics from almost comic
studies that produced the startling news that cats kill rats and mice.
Who would have thought!! Not just some rats and mice  but toss in moles,
voles and gophers, not to mention those things with wings that mostly
fly.  Stir with a hefty dose of sensationalism due to a slow news day,
and you come up with BILLIONS of small mammals and birds being
slaughtered and exterminated by feral cats. Please don't mention though
that humans  have hunted dozens of species to extinction just to have a
head to hang on the wall or a rug for the floor, or as a way to stop
male sexual dysfunction, or to carve into little statues or furniture
(elephants) or just as a lovely delicacy to eat at a way overpriced
fancy restaurant. (shark fin soup and other
disgusting dishes). Sometimes it seems like humans will kill everything
 from snails to whales

[Felvtalk] Introduction

2013-02-03 Thread laurakist
Hi everyone,

I am new to this group--and new to FeLV. I just took in an FeLV+ kitty from the
shelter where I am a volunteer. Her name is Dani and she is beautiful. Long
story short, she and her three siblings were found outside in a box when they
were about a week old. They came to the shelter and tested positive for FeLV
(ELISA). They were retested and again it was positive. At 9 weeks, they had an
IFA test, all positive. During this time, they were bottle fed until about 8
weeks, shuttled to and from the shelter by a staff member. They were also
treated for URIs with azithromycin. The shelter cultures all incoming cats for
ringworm and unfortunately theirs came back positive, so they were dipped in
lyme a couple of times a week for a while and put on Itraconazole. Dani took
longer to shake it off and so was completely alone for some time. During their
time at the shelter they were vaccinated with 2 rounds of FVRCP, a rabies
vaccine and spayed/neutered. Sadly, Dani's littermates all came down with
different issues (I don't know all the details, but I know the vet suspected
FIP) and were euthanized. Little Dani was left alone, in a bathroom with no
windows, and not many visitors. The second I found out about her, I set up the
sun room off my bedroom (it was unheated but fixed that fast) and took her
home.

Anyway, I wanted to give the whole background so you know just how much she has
been through in her short life. While even here it is not optimal--she is
isolated--it is so much better than being stuck in the stuffy bathroom. Here,
she bird watches, has a ton of toys, a much better diet and a ton of cuddles
(though not as much as I wish. I have 17 other cats.)

I have two big questions: is it possible for her to become negative with a
positive IFA result at 9 weeks? And, second: how do I best care for her? I have
her on a high quality canned only diet (wellness and weruva--no fish) and
minimize stress as much as possible. Are there supplements I should be giving?
Are NuCat vitamins recommended? Are my food choices OK for her? I will never
vaccinate or even take her to a vet (I'd have one come to me if necessary to
minimize stress.) I feel terrible she is alone a lot of the time and I have
thought about bringing in another young FeLV + kitty for her, but I am worried
about causing stress, having it backfire. I have all the patience in the world
when it comes to having cats work out issues, but I'm also very careful when
bringing in a new cat, quarantining for a couple of weeks, letting her explore
while I put others in other rooms, etc. But I wouldn't have that ability to do
so with a companion for Dani as I literally don't have any rooms left.

Sorry for such a long post! I really want to do right by her. I love her to
pieces.

Thank you!

Laura and Dani girl

[Felvtalk] stomatitis

2013-02-05 Thread Mary Lou
If your cat hs stomatitis, there is a yahoo group for discussing that problem.
The group has long discussed a liquid stomatitis syrup that comes from a group
in Dallas. Your vet has to get involved with the project and contact the group
in Dallas. I can honestly say that I had very serious doubts about the syrup,
but it works. My Abbey is FIV+ and orginally tested Felv+, but negative the
2nd and 3rd tests. She had a bad case of stomatitis and is in remission. I do
not work for the group, just let people know to check it out with an open mind.
I really does work. Mary Lou

[Felvtalk] Diarrhea

2013-04-06 Thread Maryam Ulomi
Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to bother you all, last night, a few minutes past midnight, Kitty had
diarrhea. She had it again at 4 this morning and again about 15min ago now.
Her feeding schedule has been, she ate her regular canned food with mixed water
at 9pm last night and again this morning at 5am, when fed her this morning, I
made sure to make to mix more water than usual with her food.
There has been no changes to her diet in the past few days but she did go to
the vet on Wednesday and all her bloodwork came back without issues.
At this time should I start her on a broth diet? Any specific items to include?
Vitamins? How long? should we take her to the vet?
According to dr. Pitcairns book yogurt is also good after two days of broth, is
that a good idea?
How about using slippery elm?

Thanks a lot and I'm sorry to be a bother,

Maryam

[Felvtalk] Dilemma

2013-04-18 Thread Margo

First, I would like to offer heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their
Fur kids. Even when you know it is inevitable, it is always far too soon.

I have a problem which involves my FeLV boy. I'll try to keep it
simple. Gribble has been with me for over a year. He lives with 6 other cats.
When I first found him, he tested - for FeLV/FIV. He has recently tested
positive (FeLV only) after a health crisis. At the time my Vet felt that there
was no point in vaccinating the rest of the bunch he lives with, but will test
as/if needed.

I also feed some outdoor cats. Last week someone shot one of them.
Although the attempt was made to save he leg, he is now three-legged.
Obviously, he cannot go back outside. While researching the FeLV vaccine I
came to the conclusion that the PureVax rFeLV would be the best choice. My Vet
agreed to order it for me, but the practice owner has refused. I can buy a tray
of 25, but at $459, it will be a stretch. So I'm looking for some wisdom for
thse of you that have been there. In 30 yrs of rescue, I have never had a cat
test positive for FeLV before.

Do I simply put Velvet (the recent amputee) with a different group,
that have never had any issues? They have all tested negative at one point or
another, but then, so did Gribble. I'd prefer to have him with my special needs
group, as they are the most closely supervised. What if I can't access the
rFeLV? Are any of the other, adjuvanted vaccines going to help? I know they
will increase FISS/VAS risk.

So far, Velvet is still caged, but his stitches come out Monday. I
can take him walk-about in a "safe" part of the house, but then, I guess he has
to go back to the cage.

Sigh. Any wisdom would be much appreciated. He's been thru so much
that I'd really like him to have a good life. While I'd much prefer to keep
him, for his sake, I have offered him for adoption through my Vet.

Thanks,

Margo and the gang

[Felvtalk] Lethargic

2013-04-19 Thread Maryam Ulomi
Hi everyone,
Need some advice and help.
Kitty, our 10 months old FeLV positive cat is wonderful, very active and
playful.
Since last night, she has been laying out more than usual and today she spent
most of the day just laying on the bed and not being very active.
Are these signs I really need to be concerned about or just a little tiredness?
It's Friday and I would hate for her to deteriorate over the weekend,
