Re: Belinda: looking for advice re kitty prozac
Hi Kerry, Yes the flouxetine stopped that all together, he didn't mark while he was on it. I kept him on it for about 6 months then took him off it because he was just laying around, thinking it was the flouxetine that was making him lazy, but come to find out that is just the way Cody is. He does mark on occasion, every few months, nothing like before. He used to mark all over the house several times a day, everyday. The first med made it less often, the second even less often, but the flouxetine stopped the behavior completely. I was told that half the animals using it would go back to marking if taken off, but decided to give it a try. I decided not to put him back on it because I can deal with marking every few months, if it gets worse I would put him back on it. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Marylyn, Susan, Wendy, Caroline, Diane R., Glenda and family and Tonya, Thank you all for your kind and comforting messages. I am missing my sweet girl so much. Marylyn, I loved the image of Miss Sue actually playing with the birds now. Caroline, my condolences go out to you on the loss of your sweet Monkee. I have not been able to keep up with posts recently, sorry to say, but wanted to read more about the ceremony you had for Monkee. He was truly loved, that much was plain to see just from the topic titles regarding Monkee. Will you take another cat for a friend? That is very much a nice thought about the quiet and peace that came out of Monkee's passing. Susan, the vet never suspected diabetes with Miss Sue and she never exhibited the classic symptoms of excessive thirst and/or peeing and/or weight loss so I think I can safely say that no, she was not diabetic. Well that's a pretty good report! So your not having to do the dreaded subq fluids anymore? If you are, has he gotten better about accepting it? I know the murmur is troubling, (how wonderful that your vet can come by the house to recheck), prayers that it's nothing to worry about. Prayers also that he begins to put on more weight. The only thing that I know of to help with nutrient retention is Vita B, is he getting that too? Give him a head bump from me. Well done Belinda. Nina Belinda wrote: Hi Nina, No, no feeding tube yet. His sodium is low and chloride is low, so adding salt to his food. My vet is coming by Friday to listen to his heart and see if she still hears the murmur and we'll see how his weight goes, so far he's holding at 8lbs 9oz, was 9lbs about a month or so ago. Poor guy seems like every time I feed him I'm shoving pills down him, he is so good about it. She talked with a feline specialist about the feeding tube for CRF kitties and the specialist said yes she would use it if needed. Reason we were wondering is because at some point in CRF progression, the metabolism changes and a catobolic state occurs, they don't know what causes it or how to stop it, but it basically means they lose weight and muscle wasting happens. My vets cat was eating like a piggy, her words, yet only weighted 4 pounds when she finally euthanized her, she was slowly starving to death because of the catabolic state. Belinda--just a little advice--as soon as you're up to it--WALK! Stooped over, shuffling along, but WALK! Re: Belinda and Bailey
Hi Nina, Bailey is hanging in there, I took him to emergency Sunday night he was breathing hard and fast, his nostrils were flaring and it scared me. When we finally saw the vet he was a bit better, and he had a fever of 104.2. She listened to his lungs and said he was getting air at a bit of a diminished rate, she said his gums are nice and pink, he was slightly dehydrated but she didn't think he was in crisis and said she could do an xray to check for fluid or I could wait and take him to my regular vet in the morning. Since he was better already I decided to see my regular vet in the morning, the ER vet gave me baytril for the fever, she wanted to put him on clavamox, but I didn't want to chance diarrhea again after our 2 week ordeal earlier so I asked if we could go with something else and she choose baytril. The next morning his fever was down to 103.4, so heading in the right direction, and we did more xrays which showed nothing new, no fluid or discernable tumors. I'm giving him fluids daily now instead of every other day. He is gaining a tiny bit of weight so that is good, I feed him every 4 hours (not sure if you know he has a feeding tube). His muscle wasting is not getting any worse, I can't say if it is getting better but it isn't getting worse. In the last couple of days he has been moving around a bit more, still sleeps alot but that from what I understand is part of this syndrome (official diagnosis is myeloid dysplastic). So I guess we are hanging in there. We have a vet appointment tomorrow to check his temp again, and in two weeks to check bloodwork again. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Belinda
Belinda, a bunch of people have said maybe it is time for Bailey to go. I did not get the impression from your post that you are there yet, but I have my own feelings about such things which might make me interpret things differently. I just want to say that if you are there, I hope you will try the steroid shots first to see if they make him feel better. Simon got a good month from getting those shots (which then enabled him to get more chemo, which probably also helped) and went from almost dead to running around and literally climbing up a wall into the ceiling one day. I am not saying that would necessarily happen with Bailey, but I always feel that if a cat is at the point that euthanasia is being considered, then what is the downside of trying the steroids to see if it will give them more quality time. Anyway, I did not think you were there yet anyway, but just wanted to add that. Michelle
Re: Belinda
PS. I am not ready to give up yet, I just can't figure out what to do for him, I will ask my vet again about the steriod, and also the leukeran before he has been on the pred too long for it to have full effect. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Dear Belinda - I am praying and sending a healing energy for Bailey --- If you are not ready, I am sure that Bailey is not ready, either. When Garfunkle was suffering, I know everyone (the vets) thought I should euthanize him, but I was not ready.. then he bounced back which was a miracle and was able to spend additional time with him --- so, I will be Praying that a miracle will happened for you and him. Re: Belinda
Belinda, Dexamethasone and Depomedrol are much more powerful than prednisolone. Buddy, Josephine, and Simon were all on pred initially (Jo and Buddy at 20 mg/day for a while), but it did not make anywhere near the kind of difference as the dex/depo shots did. I believe the same was true for Jen's Ewok. I would try them. I seriously would also ask to try the first of the chemo drugs, again can not remember the name but starts with E, because it can not hurt, I do not think, and if it helps you will know it is probably lymphoma and can treat as such. No, Simon did not waste away much. He started to, but when he rebounded from the steroids and chemo he actually started gaining weight. But he had multicentric lymphoma in his bone marrow and liver, and it did not really affect his appetite accept when he was jaundiced, and did not cause much muscle wasting either. Jo and Buddy both had terrible weight loss and muscle wasting. Jo had lymphoma in her kidneys and intestines. Buddy was never definitively diagnosed-- he had no masses anywhere, and at the time I did not know how to humanely go about finding if there was cancer in any of his organs, so we just treated him with steroids. In the beginning Buddy was actually eating normally but still losing weight. Michelle In a message dated 2/3/2006 1:54:55 P.M. It's the shape his body seems to be in that really has me worried. Every cat I have ever had get cancer looked exactly like this, bony even when getting enough food and acting fairly normal, Buddie was like this when she had cancer and she was having a very good quality of life, just bony.He has no energy although he is out in the room, instead of laying in the carrier all the time. He has been out in the open since yesterday and coincidentally also when the diarrhea was for the most part gone (he had one bowel movement that was mostly solid but had some runny at the end of it yesterday or this morning, I can't even remember). HIs bottom is still alittle red and inflamed but so much better than it was. He gets his epogen tonight which will make 4 complete weeks. Was Simon wasting away, in the photos he looked pretty good?

Re: Belinda--Elspar
I think Elspar is the one Michelle is thinking of! Ewok did well on that one and Ceenu or CCNU when the other chemo drugs stopped working. But I believe the oncologist started him on Elspar first thing just to get the tumor to shrink and then we started the regular protocol. You'll know pretty quickly if it works or not...and if it doesn't, I would definitely do the steroid combo that Michelle suggested...it works unbelievably fast and gave Ewok a good week in between treatments (and he was close to the end)! But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world; You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed... --Antoine de Saint-Exupéry If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other.
